I was SHOCKED to see no Chris Garcia. He's arguebly the system's best arm when you consider potential and how close he is to reaching the majors and making an impact. If only he can stay healthy, he would be talked about as one of the best pitching specs in baseball.

Thoughts?

Uh...

Staying healthy is important?

well...

they have Brackman at #3, so that doesn’t seem to be their criterion, does it?

i'm surprised no jairo heredia

not sure why he doesn’t get more respect………first season of A ball he puts up almost a K per inning with a 57% GB rate…..he needs to get that walk rate down (like most young pitchers) but he’s got the tools to go far (low to mid-90’s FB, potential plus curve, developing change)……given his age he’s got plenty of time to iron out the wrinkles

this list is bad imo .......

i hate to knock BA or BP but does anyone else think that the lists have been subpar overall. lord knows i’m not expert but i have to say i strongly disagree.

if i’m the yanks i trade austin jackson x3 before jesus montero. that’s just one example.

not impressed!

I heard Tim Lincecum will win 1 Cy Young & 11 Tim Lincecums. Question is, how many Cole Hamels will he win?

Eh

Austin Jackson is insanely valuable. He’s a true CF with a well-rounded offensive game. Jesus Montero is a very nice prospect, but he’s still a far-off teenager who’s going to play 1B. Maybe it’s close, but I don’t know why you’d gamble on Montero right now when you’ve already got something good in Jackson.

And it should be noted that if you’re the Yankees and have a bazillion dollars to spend, you can find lots of nice bats on the market to play first base for you, but you cannot find a lot of guys who are going to play a nice CF while making a meaningful contribution on offense.

by mrkupe on Nov 9, 2008 12:30 AM EST up reply actions

insanely valuable?

I don’t see it yet. He had a very good partial season in ’07 in Fla St. but I am not convinced he ever becomes all that special. He could, but not convinced.

austin jackson is not all that impressive. imo, jesus montero is the much safer bet.

BA sure

I have no problems with BP.

BA has been going downhill the last 3 years. Meanwhile, BP went from nothing on the prospect front to being one of the best (if not THE best) with KG running the prospect show. KG rubs me the wrong way at times with his boastfullness in his chats, but he does know his stuff.

by guru4u on Nov 10, 2008 10:49 AM EST up reply actions

They should

I don’t think he stays a CA.

But Jackson does stay a CF; very nice all around tools.

Has Tabata fallen that far?

Bold rankings

But I love the order of the top 6. I’m a big Austin Romine fan and Brackman looks to be getting back on track after TJ. I might be tempted to put Romine above Brackman, but really Brackman could slot in just about anywhere on the list with plenty of evidence to back up one’s opinion.

Phil Coke?

Come on John (I assume Manuel is doing them again?), the Yankees are deeper than this.

System is a little better than I thought

Towards the 2nd half of the season, I thought of the system as being fairly weak on guys that still qualify as prospects. The Yanks do have enough here not to be completely discouraged though.

A-Jax, Montero, and Romine are legit prospects at premium defensive positions (no need to remind me about Montero moving off for now, thanks). Plus Suttle and Sublett are decent enough IF prospects that have shown they might hit enough to continue moving up the chain.

McAllister, Heredia, and Betances form a pretty good trio of young arms with solid skills that have shown success and are progressing nicely through the system.

Coke and Melancon have a great chance to be solid bullpen arms next year.

Among the group of Wilkin De La Rosa, Humberto Sanchez, Marquez, Horne, Christian Garcia, and Brackman there are some wildcards and/or injury risks that at least have good enough stuff to hope that they help the big club at some point.

I also like what I’ve heard about Bleich and DJ Mitchell from this year’s draft, both are college guys that could move quickly (I really like Mitchell as a sleeper with that sinker). Plus they have a few guys in the instructional leagues that every team’s fanbase loves to get excited about and proclaim will be great players in a couple of years (Lassiter, Kelvin De Leon, Higashioka, Manny Banuelos, Eduardo Sosa, Barreda).

I’m not trying to argue it’s a top system, but I see a lot of people trashing the Yanks prospects and considering it a system devoid of talent right now which I think is undeserved.

by jibs on Nov 9, 2008 11:13 AM EST reply actions

Its dropped a great deal

from the last couple years.

…and Jesus Montero has no chance to stick at catcher…

I see a whole lot of projects, far-off raw talents, and bullpen/middle relief guys for a top 10 prospect list… real far cry from where they were a year ago… and its not all promotions or anything…

by alskor on Nov 9, 2008 11:23 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed

Again, I don’t consider this a “top” system, and it cannot be considered nearly as strong as it was in the past couple of years, but I also disagree with BA’s list quite a bit with their inclusion of the bullpen guys. I’d have a top 10 something along these lines, which I think would paint the system in a better light by emphasizing their decent (note: I didn’t say good) starting pitching depth instead of guys already earmarked to the bullpen:

A-Jax
Montero
Betances
Romine
McAllister
Jairo Heredia
Brackman
Bleich
Kelvin De Leon
Wilkin De La Rosa (He was 23 in A ball, but he’s only been a pitcher for 2 years. There’s a lot to like here — he’s already been added to their 40 man roster.)

by jibs on Nov 9, 2008 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

Theyve actually done a ton

to restock high end talent… both positional and pitching, but its all far away in the low minors.

Besides A-Jax, the only help that is near MLB ready is middle relief style. Unless you love Melancon and think he’s a high lev reliever. I do not love Melancon.

High A more likely

he hasn’t pitched above Low A yet……….i don’t see why the yanks would have him skip the FSL

he might make it there by july

by Wheelhouse on Nov 9, 2008 7:53 PM EST up reply actions

Definitely high-A for Betances

In addition to not wanting to rush Betances, putting him in high-A keeps him near the organizational brain trust in Tampa, as well as the warmer weather of Florida.

Should be part of an exciting Tampa rotation

Betances, Jairo Heredia, Andrew Brackman, Jeremy Bleich, and Wilkins de la Rosa (recent convert to the mound who had a breakout season in ’08) are the likely 5.

Royals system

may finally be better than the Yanks (sigh, well at least for this year).

by RoyalsFan4Life on Nov 9, 2008 11:49 PM EST reply actions

I love the pitching depth in the system.

Plenty of arms. We just need more left handers. Hopefully Banuelos can shine next year in A ball.

by schmosterballs92 on Nov 10, 2008 11:11 AM EST reply actions

So no free agents or trades?

I suspect a spot or two will be taken by Sabathia, Lowe, Burnett, etc. I also doubt that Brackman and Betances will be rotation-ready with only one additional year of minor league ball considering they’ll start out the season in the FSL. I also suspect that health permitting, older guys like Christian Garcia, De La Rosa and Horne would get a crack at the rotation in the event of injury/emergencies.
