Interesting Trade Offer

I received a very interesting offer in my 20 team dynasty league today.

I would get: Buster Posey & Brian Matusz

I would give: Cameron Maybin & Andrew Lambo

I don't really have a long term catcher (I have Jesus Flores & Lou Marson), so Posey would be huge there. But at the same time, I don't really have a great CF long term option either (I have Pie, Coco Crisp, and Mike Stanton).

Give me

Maybin/Lambo.

Not a huge fan of Posey in terms of fantasy baseball. I think Maybin has the potential to be a 5-tool fantasy stud and Lambo should be a nice power bat as well.

Jesus Flores isn’t horrible at C, and is probably a bigger provider there than your replacement guys in CF.

Take the potential superstar in any deal.

I would take...

Posey/Matusz. I would say the Posey and Maybin swap is about even. Posey plays a more premium position in which you have less depth and Maybin plays a premiuim position with better offensive potential. However, I would take Matusz over Lambo in a heartbeat. You have plenty of good outfielders on your minor league team already and Matusz could be better than any of the pitchers you currently have.

And even if Maybin’s a little more valuable fantasy wise than Posey, Matusz is way more valuable than Lambo. And also if you pick up Matusz you’ll have a freakishly good MiLB pitching staff.

Lambo = JD Drew (healthy version)

Matusz has great command of 4 solid pitches. However, I just don’t believe he has the pure stuff to be an ace. I think #3 starter (with #2 upside) is a realistic expectation. In REAL baseball, that is extremely valuable, however, this post is taking about FANTASY baseball. With that in mind, I like the players that will fill the stat categories in roto leagues.

not really at all

He’s a 19 year old in A ball you can’t really say that yet. And if he was he’d be regarded a little more highly, wouldn’t you think? As for Matusz, that may be true, but a good #2 starter with college experience who has a very good chance of fulfilling his potential is more valuable than a high school kid who has a far more significant chance of failing in the minors.

Posey is nowhere near Maybin – not in terms of upside, not in terms of realistic projection, not in terms of risk, etc… and certainly nowhere near as close in Fantasy value.

Matusz...

is more of a #2 with a #1 upside. Not an ace, but a #1 starter. Lambo is solid but not spectacular. He will do good in fantasy baseball, but he will not benefit his team as much as Matusz will. Lambo is probably only better than Jones of the outfielders he has and Matusz is at least the third best pitcher of his pitchers.

Also, Posey is a major upgrade for his catching situation. He is the second best catching prospect. Maybin has more offensive production, but his production over your next best center fielder is no where near as good as Posey’s over your next best catcher.

Maybin

If I was looking in isolation i’d take Posey and Matusz but given the OF you currently I have I think you pretty much have to keep Maybin.

If you do accept this offer I would definitely try to trade some of your excellent pitching for some OF help. Should be worth a ton in a Dynasty league

I think Lambo's over-rated

And frankly, I think your team could use some help in a number of positions. Matusz and Posey could give you two impact players in the immediate future, and that seems more valuable than a possible star and a guy who won’t come up for at least 3 years and probably not be a major player even then
