Vote Montero!!!!!

It is time for Jesus to get on the list. He had an unbelievable season as an 18 year old in full season ball. Here are some numbers to support him taking the #33 spot:

.326 AVG
.491 SLG
.867 OPS
17 HR

Scouts rave about his swing and believe that his bat will play at either 1B, OF, or DH down the line. John Sickels stated:

“He is still just 18, and hitting like this in a full-season league is an excellent marker at that age.”

Kevin Goldstein loves his bat saying “Wonderful offensive prospect who projects to hit for average and power. " When asked if scouts believe that Montero’s power is an 80 on the scouting scale he said "By some, absolutely. It’s monster power.”

It is time to end the insanity and put Jesus on the list.

I don’t get how Villalona gets here above Stanton and Montero too, btw.

It's just funny

The idea of ballot stuffing is so dumb. It’s like Giants (or insert other team) fans believe that if they’re team’s prospect is ranked higher, then they’ll actually be better.

The Dodgers won't win a playoff series until the Cool-a-Coo returns.

+1 and -1

I voted Montero here. Totally agree with the Villalona comment, as I actually have Montero rated higher than Angel. But Stanton and Montero are pretty equal in my eyes, with Stanton slightly ahead due to that massive power display last year. Gotta love Monero’s bat though.

Wallace is next in my eyes, after Montero. He’s another guy that can flat out rake.

went w/ montero

I heard Tim Lincecum will win 1 Cy Young & 11 Tim Lincecums. Question is, how many Cole Hamels will he win?

Testers Idea

because the vote is so wide spread now among the candidates and the list of testers so long, is it possible to bump the needed % to go onto the next poll to 8-10%?

by MightyMoose on Nov 4, 2008 8:33 PM EST reply actions

We are leaving it at 5%

We are trying to maintain a level of consistency throughout the polling process. While not always possible we are doing our best and therefore it will be kept at 5%. We added an extra player in the polling option already in an effort to get more testers on. Usually 3-4 testers are added each poll so it shouldn’t be long before everyone currently on the list gets a chance in the polling.

by King Billy Royal on Nov 4, 2008 8:37 PM EST up reply actions

its not a question of not doing your best

i’m not sure where that comes from? It wasn’t a criticism. I was just saying based on how widespread the vote is now becoming and the testers aren’t really being given the same consideration as those that keep advancing with 5-6%, i just thought it might be a good idea to up the % required for candidates to go on to the next poll. Therefore more opportunities are given to the other testers, that’s all.

Keep up the good work.

I didn't think you were criticizing

Trust me when I say I wasn’t at all offended by your post.

KRB

good bro. certainly didn’t mean to come across as complaining.

by MightyMoose on Nov 4, 2008 9:48 PM EST up reply actions

Other - Logan Morrison

followed by Freeman, Montero and Wallace (though a case can be made for all those guys now, I think)

Morrison was 3-5 today with another HR, Double and 3 Rbi’s pushing his AFL line to:

Team League Avg. G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI TB BB SO SB CS OBP SLG OPS
                          .452 15 62 13 28 5 2 4 19 49 0 9 1 0 .452 .790 1.242

morrison should of been on the poll for atleast the last 3 picks

by tulolince on Nov 4, 2008 8:51 PM EST up reply actions

I don't get the lack of love for Morrison

Every time he gets on the poll he gets his butt kicked. He seems to have a lot of supporters in the comments section but it never seems to translate to votes.

I vote Morrison

I think we got a little pitcher happy, low A guys with mid 3 eras over Morrison. I betcha John gives him an A-. Low 20s, 21-22 is about where he belongs.

by wobatus on Nov 4, 2008 10:12 PM EST up reply actions

morrison

been asking for him up there for a good while too he has been a stud playing in a killer set of pitchers parks in the FSL

by Fishfan79 on Nov 5, 2008 12:18 PM EST up reply actions

Morrison

He has been put on the poll 4 times, as recently as #29, and he can’t garner the 5% to stay on the ballot. I think he is a great prospect but I guess the community doesn’t feel that hignly on him.

I like him too

I would vote Morrison and santana over alderson, alvarez, smoak, andrus, villalona, matusz, hosmer, beckham, maxram, and maybe Anderson Lars and Brett, Snider, Tillman, McCucthen. Some of them may end up better but haven’t shown enough yet.

I must admit I don’t know ,uch about what the scouts say, but having Jarrod Parker beat these guys out is very surprising to me. Nice k-bb, but not especially stunning midwest league line to me. He seems like he could be quite good, but I definitely need to see more at higher levels. Not like he dominated.

Freeman

.316, .378, .521, .899, 33 2Bs, 18 HRs, 46/84 BB/K

VERY impressive for an 18 year old in Low A.

Heyward definitely benefited from having Freeman has protection all season long.

Line-up protection is more myth than anything else.

Bingo

If you read “The Baseball Economist” it proves that lineup protection is definitely a myth.

Jordan Schafer would be on this list already if it wasn't for the HGH thing

so, for those of you who haven’t got the memo: HGH does not improve player performance in baseball. (If anything, it worsens it in the short term.) All it does is help you recover faster from injuries.

Schafer’s numbers are legit and his defensive skills make him much preferable in the abstract to the array of DH-in-waiting types.

How is Michael Main not even considered on here?

Check out some results and videos. The kid is damn good. Not to mention if pitching were to fail, he was touted as a plus outfielder.

He has been on the ballots plenty of times....

The problem is that he is unable to get 5% to stay on the ballot. I am a big Morrison fan but if he doesn’t get 5% he goes off like everyone else. The last time that Morrison was on the ballot was #29 which is only 3 spots ago since we didn’t do a poll for #30 so you really haven’t been waiting that long.

Vitters

then Schafer and Freeman. Vitters is one year removed from being considered by some to be the best bat in the draft, and hasn’t done anything but succeed in the low minors…it’s a no brainer at this point

by PrincetonCubs on Nov 5, 2008 1:35 AM EST reply actions

Not sure about that

I like Vitters too, but he struggled mightily 2 years ago. Last year was a bit of a redemption year for him, but I wouldn’t go saying that he has “done nothing but succeed” so far. He failed in 2007.

There are a few more hitters like Montero and Wallace that I like more than Vitters right now, but I can totally see Vitters going around #40 or so.

by guru4u on Nov 5, 2008 10:17 AM EST up reply actions

More to the point, what he has done, besides succeed, is demonstrate a propensity for injuries

Perhaps he resembles Howie Kendrick in more ways than one might think.

by PaulThomas on Nov 5, 2008 1:48 PM EST up reply actions

Struggled 2 years ago?

You gotta be kidding me. DBSSS. It was a whopping 51 AB’s as a 17 year old who was still feeling effects of pnuemonia from a few months prior. Stats in the lowest levels in the minors are worth squat to begin with – factor in it was 2 miniscule sample sizes at 2 different levels along with the illness and age and you’ve got perhaps the worst arguement against a player ever waged on this site.

by slurve on Nov 5, 2008 2:25 PM EST up reply actions

READ SLURVE

Princeton said Vitters has “done nothing but succeed”. Albeit in a very small sample size, I would not place a .118/.164/.118 line under “success” – even if it was only 51 ABs.

Yes, Vitters had a nice 2008, but that was even against short-season competition.

by guru4u on Nov 6, 2008 10:08 AM EST up reply actions

he had just 51 abs after finishing high school. I don’t think that qualifies as a failure. last year, he hit very well. I think any propensity for injuries could likely be attributed to lingering weaknesses after recovering from pneumonia…hopefully this year, a full season in A/A+/maybe in AA will allow him to grow into his projection.
