Maddux Retiring

From Rotoworld:

"The New York Post quotes agent Scott Boras as saying Greg Maddux is nearly certain to retire.
That was the guess going into the offseason, but it's still sad news if true. "He hasn't made a final decision, but for now it is doubtful he will play (any longer)," Boras said at the GM meetings. "As it stands now, he is not going to play."

Thoughts: It will be sad to see the great Maddux retire.  Personally I feel that he is the greatest pitcher of my generation (sorry Clemens but the roids knocked you down a notch) and his longivity is remarkable.  His run in the mid 90s was truly amazing with back to back seasons of sub 1.65 ERAs.  Now that he is retiring I can imagine him moving into the role as either a pitching coach or perhaps into a team's front office.

Maddux

Watching “the surgeon” pitch and exploiting a hitter’s holes in his prime was like watching a master artist in the midst of making one of his works of art – even without “overpowering” stuff, he transcended the idea of typical pitching mechanics by altering his various pitches ever so slightly. I remember reading quotes on hitters from this time saying it was like seeing a pitcher with a 20-pitch arsenal.

Well...

This IS Scott Boras we’re talking about. Can’t get those extra bucks for swaying someone out of retirement w/o the backdrop of actually having retirement out there as a possibility. I’ll believe it when it’s opening day and he’s not signed.

Were I running a team, I would attempt to hire Maddux as my pitching coach immediately. He’s the most obvious candidate for an immediate coaching job since Joe Girardi retired.

+1

He is a baseball genius and would be a brilliant pitching coach. Would like to eventually see him as a manager…

sad day

I will miss Maddux. I always pull for the 40+ guys and was hoping he’d make a run for 380 wins

Manager

I know there will be a lot of talk for him to be a pitching coach, but I honestly think he would make a great manager. Just has a great baseball mind generally, and there’s no reason to limit it to the pitcher’s side of the ball. He understands hitting and fielding just as well as he understands pitching, which is part of what made him such a great pitcher.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

+1!

Gave stickpiano a +1 before seeing yours, Brickhaus. Agree with both of you but see his ultimate / best value (post player days) as a manager…

maddux

when i was pitching, i modeled my entire motion after maddux’s…..the most pure motion that i’ve ever seen….

i was rather hoping that he would hold on a few years to move to #3 all time in wins….he had a shot, too….amazing for a pitcher in the era of 5 man rotations to rack up more wins than anyone but dead ball era pitchers

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
