Good season, big ceiling, strong tools. I guarantee both BA & BP have him higher than this, for what that’s worth.

i’ll take care of the morning poll. thanks kingbilly for holding down the fort.

I heard Tim Lincecum will win 1 Cy Young & 11 Tim Lincecums. Question is, how many Cole Hamels will he win?

Welgarz?

I understand the great OBP skills, but what else does he offer?

by Take3 on Nov 30, 2008 10:20 PM EST up reply actions

Re-tooling his swing

And developing his plate discipline in 08; in 07, he showed big power, and has super power upside (70 power potential?). I expect him to become Justin Morneau with more walks and with fringe-average (at best) defense in the OF.

From BA: “Weglarz has uncanny discipline for a player his age and size, rarely offering at pitches outside of the strike zone and showing the potential to draw 100 walks in a season. He generates excellent loft, bat speed and leverage with his swing and shows plus-plus power potential, giving him an outstanding combination of power and patience.”

really

morneau with more walks? if people actually thought he had that potential, he would be top ten. morneau is a perennial mvp candidate.

by zeisenbe on Dec 1, 2008 12:04 AM EST up reply actions

He shouldn't be

That he is is a sign that the MVP voters have utterly no idea what makes baseball players valuable. He was about 40 runs worse than Mauer this season, yet got more MVP votes.

I could see Niemann

He’s a solid SP, nothing flashy, but a solid #3 or #4 innings eater. I voted Daryl Jones for the upside, but either Niemann or Poreda wouldn’t be a terrible choice here.

Neftali Soto

Still gotta go with the Puerto Rican slugger.

Donald

For me,the next ten, in order, are:
Donald,
Moore,
Frazier,
Betances,
Soto,
Holt,
Taylor,
Burgess,
Dejesus,
Borbon.

Although

I might switch Weglarz for Borbon.

I think Kulbacki should be added to the tester pool.

honestly though

borbon should have been on here b4 perez

Daryl Jones

It’s a shame he isn’t on yet. Definitely better than some of the OF prospects already on.

Donald/Jones

I went Donald this poll, but voted for Jones once and I think he would be my next vote.

I’ve been trumpeting this guy like yourself Dewey for quite a while. Weglarz is next for me. after Jones.

Poreda/Simmons

I voted for Donald, but I am surprised the vote for Simmons is 3-1 over Poreda. I actually prefer Poreda.

by wobatus on Nov 30, 2008 10:07 PM EST reply actions

My next 5...

Simmons
Tabata
Poreda
Chris Perez
Weglarz

by byronlhsdrmr on Nov 30, 2008 11:21 PM EST reply actions

why simmons over Poreda?

I’d like to see this case laid out.

Same league, same age. Poreda gave up fewer hits and homers per 9, his k rate was slightly lower but above 7, k-bb also just slightly lower, slightly higher groundball rate. Plus he’s lefty. They are close, but I’d say Poreda has been slightly better. And he was one draft spot ahead of Simmons (gives one an idea how close they are).

by wobatus on Nov 30, 2008 11:40 PM EST reply actions

Being a lefty doesn't matter for SP

Fewer hits pretty much never matters for anyone— if a guy is elite, he’ll have the K/9 and K/BB to back it up. If not, it’s probably just luck.

And many of Poreda’s stats were compiled in a weaker league.

by PaulThomas on Dec 1, 2008 12:05 AM EST up reply actions

poreda

was better in the same league. And I think such a large discrepancy in hits per 9 matters. The homer rate certainly does.

by wobatus on Dec 1, 2008 1:04 AM EST up reply actions

They didn't pitch

in the same league. Poreda pitched in Carolina and Southern Leagues, both pitcher’s leagues. Simmons spent the whole year in the Texas League, a hitter’s league. While the numbers are very similar, Simmons posting them in the tougher league puts him ahead for me. Poreda is the next pitcher for me after Simmons, and I’d have both of them on already if it was me. There are at least 5 pitchers on the list that I have behind both of these guys, some very far behind them.

agree and Disagree

Your argument for Simmons is exactly right….

Disagree on them belonging on the list at this point and the top 100 is questionable.

by novaoakland on Dec 1, 2008 5:36 AM EST up reply actions

oops

my bad. OK, I can see it being sort of a toss up.

I voted for Donald anyway. :)

by wobatus on Dec 1, 2008 8:32 AM EST up reply actions

I think it's about time for Jason Donald

Passable shortstop on defense and his bat is likely to play above average.

by OkayJay81 on Dec 1, 2008 12:45 AM EST reply actions

Perez v. Borbon

They are so very different, position, eta, ceiling, likelihood of at least being an average regular, which are all things I look at, all very, different. Personally I would go with the bird in the hand in Borbon a little before Perez but it is very much a matter of taste.

by Dalman on Dec 1, 2008 2:03 AM EST reply actions

Agreed

and while I’m no great fan of Borbon, I can’t for the life of me see how anyone could vote Nick Noonan or Tabata over him.
