So how many times have you voted for Weglarz in the last couple days?
I guess the answer to Would You? is obviously yes.

Good season, big ceiling, strong tools. I guarantee both BA & BP have him higher than this, for what that’s worth.

Re-tooling his swing
And developing his plate discipline in 08; in 07, he showed big power, and has super power upside (70 power potential?). I expect him to become Justin Morneau with more walks and with fringe-average (at best) defense in the OF.
From BA: “Weglarz has uncanny discipline for a player his age and size, rarely offering at pitches outside of the strike zone and showing the potential to draw 100 walks in a season. He generates excellent loft, bat speed and leverage with his swing and shows plus-plus power potential, giving him an outstanding combination of power and patience.”

morneau with more walks? if people actually thought he had that potential, he would be top ten. morneau is a perennial mvp candidate.

He shouldn't be
That he is is a sign that the MVP voters have utterly no idea what makes baseball players valuable. He was about 40 runs worse than Mauer this season, yet got more MVP votes.

I could see Niemann
He’s a solid SP, nothing flashy, but a solid #3 or #4 innings eater. I voted Daryl Jones for the upside, but either Niemann or Poreda wouldn’t be a terrible choice here.

question
What position do you see him playing on the Phillies next year? I like him, but he is blocked at SS and 2B since Utley and Rollins aren’t going anywhere. Utley’s injury might create an opening, but I think the Phils would be best served usings an veteran utility player at second until Chase comes back.
I am not sure if he has been playing at 3B that much this past year, but if Donald could slide to 3B with average defense it might be the best fit for the team. What do you think?
Slowey is a control freak, and I like it!!

utley is out. feliz is hurting, but beyond that, he's not very good
Utley had an arthroscopic debridement of his labrum and a bony lesion that was present. Kelly reported the surgery went well and the findings yesterday were consistent with the diagnostic studies performed prior to surgery. It is anticipated that he will have a four to six month recovery period as previously described.
Third baseman Pedro Feliz had a lumbar discectomy performed on November 20 by Dr. Robert Watkins in Los Angeles and the procedure went well. The discectomy was performed on the L4-5 disc and Feliz will return home to complete his rehabilitation program, which is expected to require eight to 12 weeks.
so, basically, donald is the only middle infielder of consequence above low A for the phillies. the starting 2Bman is out for 6 months, and the best alternate option hit .217/.297/.297 in the majors last year in what was considered a successful season.
the way i see it, donald is the only option other than rushing one of the best players in the league back from surgery in a year when the need to win now has been sated.
the thing is, donald is a hell of a player, and once he gets his foot in the door, he’s not gonna let it go easily. he gon hit.

Feliz is the most underrated league-average player in baseball
The guy can’t hit for shit, but people haven’t seemed to pick up on the fact that he’s an amazing defender at third base. Or was, at least. I suppose the back problems might slow him down a bit.
He’s Joe Crede’s non-gritty-white-guy, Caribbean-hacking-at-slop twin.

Feliz is the most frustrating player
Some days I love him, some days I just shake my head in disgust. Totally agree about his D, he has one of the best arms from 3rd base around, every single throw is a perfect chest high rope to first base.

why simmons over Poreda?
I’d like to see this case laid out.
Same league, same age. Poreda gave up fewer hits and homers per 9, his k rate was slightly lower but above 7, k-bb also just slightly lower, slightly higher groundball rate. Plus he’s lefty. They are close, but I’d say Poreda has been slightly better. And he was one draft spot ahead of Simmons (gives one an idea how close they are).

Being a lefty doesn't matter for SP
Fewer hits pretty much never matters for anyone— if a guy is elite, he’ll have the K/9 and K/BB to back it up. If not, it’s probably just luck.
And many of Poreda’s stats were compiled in a weaker league.

was better in the same league. And I think such a large discrepancy in hits per 9 matters. The homer rate certainly does.

They didn't pitch
in the same league. Poreda pitched in Carolina and Southern Leagues, both pitcher’s leagues. Simmons spent the whole year in the Texas League, a hitter’s league. While the numbers are very similar, Simmons posting them in the tougher league puts him ahead for me. Poreda is the next pitcher for me after Simmons, and I’d have both of them on already if it was me. There are at least 5 pitchers on the list that I have behind both of these guys, some very far behind them.

Perez v. Borbon
They are so very different, position, eta, ceiling, likelihood of at least being an average regular, which are all things I look at, all very, different. Personally I would go with the bird in the hand in Borbon a little before Perez but it is very much a matter of taste.
