Prospect hounds usually drool over a guy like this. I’m really surprised he has lasted this long, and even more surprised that noone seems to be talking about him.

Colby Rasmus casts a long shadow
Also— I know he’s younger than Jon Jay, but does that really make up for a 100 point OPS difference? Jay hasn’t been talked about at all, but I think he should actually be making the list somewhere about now.

Gorkys
Highest ceiling.
Lets not ignore defense here. He could be a very valuable player and his floor is pretty high, too.

Just based on ceiling...
Halman has a higher ceiling than Hernandez.
Hernandez has more polish and has age-relative-to-league going for him, but remember that Halman’s only 2 weeks older. It’s scary to think that he STILL has tons of projection left despite already having maybe the most raw power of any up the middle player in the minors. And like Hernandez, Halman is an above average fielder at a premium position.

Think Gorkys Ceiling is Higher than Jones?
Jones was a two-sport star in HS. Could have played DI college football had he not wanted to so he has great athletic ability. He has also showed decent patience. To me, he seems like Desmond Jennings without the injuries.

He's a good choice too
Im just not excited about him, but I understand why others would be. 1B prospects… I dont know… they have to be something really special for me to vote them. Id rather take a guy with defensive value like Gorkys or live arms like Poreda. I mean, this isnt a fantasy baseball top 100. Blanks is very promising though, and should be in my next few votes.

If you would vote for James Simmons on this poll, please +1 this post
It’s clearly more than we can ask for him to be put on the actual poll.

Simmons
I have added him as a tester. Please note that there are quite a few prospects to get to that haven’t been on the polls yet before I get to him. So when he is not on the poll in the next few I don’t want you to start throwing a big ‘Paul Thomas Pity Party’.

Oh, don't worry... I wasn't nearly naive enough to expect THAT
You really need to turn the ballot over more. A 5% cutoff is just ridiculous at this point— none of these guys are that much better than the rest. Hell, Mazzaro has been in the tester pile for 11 votes now without coming up on a ballot (though I don’t think he’s top 75 material, personally).
Incidentally, if anyone’s interested, Sean Doolittle just got done kicking the ass of Mazzaro, Simmons and Inoa in AN’s community poll. Looks like Simmons will win #8 based on early returns.

In that last poll, a guy brought up a good point...
That all these prospects are so underwhelming that they vote is getting split very evenly and not enough guys are getting bumped off of the poll each time.

I think we should cycle guys who get under 8% at this point. Just too many prospects to make our way through if only one or two guys are getting replaced each poll.
I voted Burgess, but considering how little support he’s gotten, I would hope he’s not on the next poll, since he has no shot of winning anyway.

Halman...
I know his approach is a mess, but it’s easy to forget he was 20 last year. He has all the time in the world to shore up the swing and work on discipline, and I’ve got some faith he’ll get it done with a new regime in charge of minor league instruction for the Mariners.

Actually...
Cust’s K% at age 20: 31.87%
Halman’s: 28.86%
Now, Halman didn’t have Cust’s ability to draw walks, but he does have speed, defense, and age working for him.
Get back to studying torts :)

Re: plate discipline
While Halman’s plate discipline obviously needs work, I’m actually encouraged that it improved from last year, w/o a drop in production. In fact, his production improved, too.
K/BB ratio
2007: 162/29 = 5.59
2008: 142/32 = 4.44
Halman’s plate discipline is not as bad as guys already on the list:
Villalona: 118/18 = 6.56 (horrendous!)
Arencibia: 101/18 = 5.61 (almost as bad)
Several guys had more K’s:
Snider: 153
Stanton: 153
Carter: 156
Do you think Villalona and Arencibia also should not be on the list? Neither has Halman’s power/speed combo.

Don't forget...
defense. Halman plays it well at a hard position. Villalona and Carter don’t, while Snider and Stanton are passable, but definitely not assets with the glove.

Villalona is only justifiable at #77
based on projection. He’s a joke at #25, or wherever he is on this list.
Arencibia’s a catcher, so the standards for him are a bit lax hitting-wise. However, I think he’s probably overrated on here. So we’re seeing a pattern— guys with zero plate discipline are being systematically overrated, given how hard it is for that kind of player to actually be an asset with the bat.
