Billingsley breaks leg
Story:
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20081122&content_id=3689204&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb
The article says that he will be ready for the 2009 season, but I have to wonder about lingering effects. It is his plant leg as he throws, and that leg has to withstand a LOT of torque, even moreso with a power pitcher like Billingsley. What are the community's thoughts? Is this a non-story, or could this derail a very promising young arm? Or is the real angle somewhere in between?

Spiral fractures are a nasty thing in itself. Being that is is his plant leg could lead to future problems down the road if he rushes his recovery too quickly. I don’t think it could derail him but they need to keep a close eye on his activity.

It's a broken leg
They’ve been setting those for what, centuries? Assuming we don’t hear about any setbacks or anything, I wouldn’t be too worried.

Yes
but how many doctors have worked on broken legs on freaks of nature like Billingsley. For all we know, another leg may spawn out of the sharded bones.
I've got a McPheever, and only JoJo Reyes can help me!

Um, no
I think the chances of that happening are slim to none. If he doesn’t rush himself in recovery, he should be fine.

slim?
So, there IS a chance another limb may spawn out of the sharded bones? :)

Halladay
That Halladay broken leg off the Mench liner took forever to heal. Dodgers fans don’t want to be hearing about that I’m sure.
Rios is the next Juan Gonzales, thats right, I said it.

I think it could be an issue
The reports say “ready for the start of spring training” – Well, guess what? Most pitchers start preparing well before that. Its certainly going to delay his throwing program and it will prevent him from doing cardio and building leg strength most of the winter – vital to a pitcher staying healthy.
For a young guy – yeah, this very easily could be an issue. Stop kidding yourselves.

I’d be concerned about him being unconsciously scared when he plants it, leading to it affecting his mechanics. That opens up a whole host of issues in addition to affecting his preparedness.

that's my thought
i broke a toe on my plant foot my last year of competitive ball, and i came back too quick (pitched relief in a couple playoff games still in my boot for the toe)…i played some intramural ball in college, and it took a full season of intramurals before i got over favoring it, and i wasn’t throwing anywhere near 90+ mph stuff….i finally got my control back when i started planting correct on the middle of my foot again instead of on the outside of it to try to stay away from the toe…i got a ton of movement back as well, but i think it could delay billingsley’s development, and slowing it down could put him behind the 8-ball to catch up….
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

Bob Gibson
He had his plant leg broken by a line drive off of the bat of Roberto Clemente in the 1967 season. A couple of months later he went 3-0 in the world series, and the very next season he went 22-9 with a 1.12 ERA over 304 innings. I think Billingsley will be fine, if they don’t rush him back.

I would be more worried...
about the fact that he is coming off a season where he threw 65 more innings than the season before. That is a recipe for disaster…

yeah
Stuff like this is way more important than a broken leg 5 months before ST, IMO.
