donald, frazier, lambo, samardzija coming up.

When they should be sacrifice bunting, they are buying effeminate designer jeans. When they should be fouling off pitches, they are masturbating. Always, they are masturbating.

J.P. Arencibia

don’t know how you can go wrong w/ a very good defensive catcher who happens to have plus power.

this from BA

Arencibia has impressive power to all fields—especially to center and left field—and rarely gets cheated at the plate. An agile and fundamentally sound receiver who calls a good game, he’s bilingual and a natural leader. He threw out 34 percent of basestealers in 2008, and evaluators rave about his easy, accurate and strong throwing arm. He also improved his blocking skills, dramatically reducing his rate of passed balls.

Q: Sean from London England asks:
Where do you rank JP Arencibia among catching prospects and what probability do you see for him sticking at the position. Could you also provide an ETA given the team’s lack of depth at the position? Thanks.

A: Matt Eddy: For most, Arencibia probably ranks among the top five catchers in the minors, and certainly behind Wieters, but aside from that it depends on your take on Carlos Santana, Jesus Montero, Buster Posey, Jason Castro and Kyle Skipworth.
Q: Tom from San Francisco asks:
Hi, John. Big fan of your (and the staff’s) work. What are the chances that a bulb goes off in Arencibia’s head and he comes to the conclusion that he needs to start working the count more and drawing some walks?

A: John Manuel: Thank you Tom. I think more important for Arencibia than drawing walks is getting into consistent hitter’s counts, because when he does, he punishes the ball. You can be an effective big league hitter without drawing walks; it’s harder to do but it can be done. He’s good enough defensively that he’ll be given time in the big leagues to figure it out. He has plus power, plus defense, plus arm . . . potential plus hitting tool. Four-tool catcher, not bad.

I heard Tim Lincecum will win 1 Cy Young & 11 Tim Lincecums. Question is, how many Cole Hamels will he win?

How you can go wrong

That catchers envies Jeff Francoeur’s plate discipline.

by aCone419 on Nov 21, 2008 11:49 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If Francoeur was a plus defender at C

He’s actually be semi-useful. Well, not last year. But in general.

by mraver on Nov 21, 2008 11:53 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Francoeur

had a 3.5:1 K:BB in AA. At 20. Arencibia (8:1 in AA at 22) WISHES he could approach the plate discipline that even Jeff Francoeur has.

by DrunkIrish on Nov 21, 2008 12:01 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

this is an area of concern which is why he didn’t rank in the top 25 which he would have easily done if plate discipline weren’t an issue.

i think his problem stems from extreme over-aggression more than him not being able to hit or recognize certain pitches. we’ll see what happens.

I heard Tim Lincecum will win 1 Cy Young & 11 Tim Lincecums. Question is, how many Cole Hamels will he win?

by the pinstripes on Nov 21, 2008 12:47 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The fact is...

whatever way you want to try to justify Arencibia’s atrocious plate discipline, it’s still just as bad. Whether his problem is approach, inability to hit breaking pitches, or a complete lack of pitch recognition, the problem is just as big. You have no way of knowing WHY Arencibia can’t draw a walk, and unless he learns to you can’t excuse it away and call him a better prospect than he is.

-1

Too early for a guy with basically zero chance of being a star level player. The argument for Arencibia is essentially that despite his flaws as a hitter he’s a catcher. Bam. That’s it.

by alskor on Nov 21, 2008 1:51 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agreed

If one of your better outcomes is to be Rod Barajas, you can’t be on the list this early.

Went with Burgess here

potential middle of the order hitter, in RF. He needs to stick on the polls here.

+1

Though I think Saunders is also quite deserving here.

by aCone419 on Nov 21, 2008 11:49 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah.

Putting the minor league version of Miguel Olivo ahead of Saunders doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. At least Olivo could draw a walk when he was in AA.

With what we (should) know about plate discipline with regard to prospect development, Arencibia landing on the list this high will make me lose respect for this topic pretty quickly.

+1

until he gets on

stats, tools, and ARL

Go Pirates!!!

Jennings

on ceiling, then Arencibia

Jennings too.

He is plate discipline and tools. He will be a star.

yes

also, had he been healthy, Top 20 last year for sure… and probably in my top 10…

Tester

I’d love to see Cortes back on the next poll.

Also, I’m amazed how far Gio has fallen.

The Dodgers won't win a playoff series until the Cool-a-Coo returns.

by mckeeno on Nov 21, 2008 11:34 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agreed

On both counts +1 to Cortes and as to Gio, I had him on my rankings long ago, however, it was after Carrasco. One foot before the other.

by thudean on Nov 21, 2008 11:48 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree

I voted Carrasco here. And my comment about Gio is more how far he’s fallen from last year’s appraisal.

Gio is, I think, suffering from "eligibility confusion"

where a lot of people don’t really understand whether or not he’s eligible. So they’re not sure whether they should still be talking about him or not.

Samardzija

Will explain when I get out of class.

by demondeaconsbaseball on Nov 21, 2008 12:29 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Arencibia

At this point, he looks like he’s got Tyler Flowers kind of power with the likelihood of remaining behind the plate.

by MightyMoose on Nov 21, 2008 12:37 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Desmond Jennings

Though I would have gone with Nick Weglarz or Martin Perez if they were eligible.

I still think Ivan DeJesus and Gorkys Hernandez and Engel Beltre are ready for the list.

by gogotabata on Nov 21, 2008 1:43 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

DeJesus is an interesting call, Beltre was not good enough

Beltre could sneak into the back of the top 100 with his tools and plate coverage, but with a 308 OBP, it’s hard to put an outfielder this high.

it's still kind of depressing as a phils fan

we could have had phil hughes or yovani gallardo.

Texas could have had

Ellsbury or Bucholz or Garza or….

Needless to say, that is why the draft is a crap shoot.

by laxtonto on Nov 21, 2008 6:26 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

More like...

a poker game. There is the ‘luck of the draw’ element, but over time the more skillful players will win.
