BP's Marlins Top 11 Prospects
Five-Star Prospects
1. Cameron Maybin, CF
2. Michael Stanton, RF
3. Matt Dominguez, 3B
Four-Star Prospects
4. Logan Morrison, 1B
5. Kyle Skipworth, C
6. Jose Ceda, RHP
Three-Star Prospects
7. Sean West, LHP
8. Ryan Tucker, RHP
9. Chris Coghlan, 2B
10. John Raynor, LF
11. Gaby Sanchez, 1BJust Missed: Brett Carroll, OF; Scout Cousins, OF; Ike Galloway, OF
Ranking Challenges: I think Maybin and Stanton are a step ahead of Dominguez and Morrison, but you could flip those four in any order and still make an argument for each scenario. For me, two years and a positional difference create a decent gap between the pair I rank up ahead of the other two. Skipworth and Ceda are on their own island right behind that quartet, and then seven through 11 are all very close to each other.
...
The Sleeper: Acquired recently in a trade with Washington, second baseman Jake Smolinski has had trouble staying healthy in the pros, but he's a surprisingly advanced hitter for a teenager from the north (Illinois), with a very quick bat.

Hmmm....
I wonder if any other publications will have Dominguez over Morrison.
The Dodgers won't win a playoff series until the Cool-a-Coo returns.

I'm actually surprised
that BP has Dominguez over Morrison. I would expect that from BA since they’re so much more tools leaning anyway, but this one is surprising.

Because he's a 1B
I’m not surprised. For me, its much harder to be a “special” bat at first base than any other position (even OF). Therefore, you have to impress all the more.

Have you read the writeups on each of them?
Dominguez is more upside and potential, while Morrison is a more polished hitter. If you look at the Perfect World and Glass Half Empty projections for each, I’d say that Morrison is by far the safer bet, and Dominguez is risky. That’s totally a BA type thing, to go for the flash over substance, but not always the case with BP. That’s why I was surprised.

depends on what you mean by "BP"
most of the BP writers are either neutral or on the “stats” side, but KG is solely responsible for the prospect rankings and he’s very much on the “scouts” side.

Marlins system
Has really improved with there last couple of drafts. Dominguez, Stanton, and Skipworth all have high ceilings while morrison is safer. I think Sean West should be higher than a three star but I understand with the injury concerns

I liked the Top 10 aged 25 and under list
That’s far more interesting, especially on some of the younger teams. I was intrigued by Josh Johnson landing between Stanton and Dominguez. I wonder where he’d rank overall for pitchers 25 and under.

They must be extremely high on stanton
If they are putting him ahead of johnson. I love his ceiling and 40 plus hr power guys dont grow on trees but he does k a lot and it was only low A. I love stanton more than anyone but I couldnt put him ahead of johnson.

+1
I agree FH, take it with a grain of salt. BP is much more focused on tools. I think he’s much more likely to be a 30+ hr with huge k’s. He’s probably more like Jack Cust, which isn’t too bad all things considering.

"BP is much more focused on tools"
than who…?
Id say they are far less focused on tools than most, like BA…

I bet John ranks Morrison higher
certainly I expect him ranked above Dominguez. I bet John puts him over Stanton, too.

Morrrison
I was personally shocked to see Morrison behind Dominguez. Callis raved about him yesterday in his chat he said scouts raved he was most impressive player in AFL so far. I personally have been following logan for almost 3 years now and i think he should be a 5 star prospect who has all star level talent.
This was from todays ESPN CHAT with Keith Law
Adam: (Los Angeles, CA): How good can Logan Morrison and Mike Stanton be?
Keith Law: (1:19 PM ET ) Morrison’s way ahead of Stanton for me. Stanton’s got big power, LONG swing, good chance he ends up a 4A guy, or maybe just a Russell Branyan type. Morrison has more polish, better pitch recognition, with plus power of his own – potential All-Star, probably a top 20 prospect in all of baseball right now.

top 20 prospect in all of baseball
But can’t crack Marlins top 3 per BP and only 37 in our community poll. I agree that Morrison behind Dominguez is pretty shocking. Well, maybe not shcoking, but it gave me pause. :) And I think Law’s description of Stanton versus Morrison would fit my take as well.

Jose Ceda
So the Marlins got a Four-Star for Kevin Gregg.
Nicely done Fishies.

Not that big a surprise
The baseball management team in Florida is one of the best in the business, they’re just hamstrung sometimes by the fact that Loria refuses to even spend up to his Revenue Sharing monies.

I agree
I mean, imagine how much better they could do in trades if the other teams didn’t have the leverage of knowing Florida HAS to unload a guy at all costs because Loria won’t pay his salary otherwise.

I'd like to know a little more about SP Blake Brewer.........???????
I’ve read in a few different places that he could be a very good player. But I don’t know what that means……is he a top-of-the-rotation guy? Is this a definite sleeper? Which starting pitcher does he most closely compare to? A little insight would be appreciated. Thanks Marlins fans…..
All I really know is that he was a 2008 draftee out of high school. Here are his stats:

Highest rated system so far
This is clearly the highest regarded system in Goldstein’s eyes rated to date.

Wow...
I can not wait until this team starts coming together and their prospects get to the majors. Imagin this:
C K. Skipworth
1B L. Morrison
2B D. Uggla
SS H. Ramirez
3B M. Dominguez
LF M. Stanton
CF C. Maybin
RF J. Hermida
1. J. Johnson
2. A. Miller
3. A. Sanchez
4. S. West
5. R. Tucker
CL J. Ceda
Talk about a potentially really good team.

Well
by the time Skipworth is ready, Uggla and Hermida will mostly likely be gone, so insert Coghlan and maybe Raynor. You’re still looking at a power house team really. One of Johnson or Sanchez may be gone by then too, unless they lock them up in the next year or two.

This is the Marlins we’re talking about, here.
