Max Ramirez is by far the best hitter not on the list so far

And much better than a few hitters already on it. If he becomes even a decent catcher, then he’ll be terrifically valuable. Otherwise, he’s still be a very good DH

Braves

Man, the Braves draft well. On the list: Hanson, Heyward, Feliz, and Andrus all at least started in their system. And now Freeman and Ramirez in the poll and Schafer a tester. That’s 7 drafted or signed by the Braves in the discussion. Sure seems like a lot.

How many '08 draftees will go before Tim Beckham?

He was the number one pick, he wasn’t considered a reach pick, and he hasn’t been injured or had a bad debut season, so what gives? Are people just too enamored with power?

You're still worried about

where guys are still going on this list? This has been reduced to nothing more than an excercise in debating prospect groups with a side of ballot-stuffing – garnished with some flaming. The actual list stopped meaning something quite a while ago to me, but some the discussion has been good, but it’s definately deteriorating as we go.

That is two seperate issues though. Sliuve probably still appreciates the threads being made because of the discussion but I like him just look at the list and shake my head. It isn’t their fault the community can’t be adults, follow instructions/rules and will do whatever they have to for their favorite prospect to be on the list. I was very interested in the first few polls but the last 15-20 are pretty meaningless. /me shrugs

List complaints

At least we are completing this list. From what I have heard, every time you start your community top 50 list, it never gets completed!!! ;)

Intersting, considering the last 2 LSB community prospect polls where to 25 and 30

and currently about to finish top 25 Greatest Rangers ever…

Hey man, I don’t mind input, but I do mind facts. If you guys want to argue with each other, that is fine. Don’t trash other boards unless you do your home work.

by laxtonto on Nov 2, 2008 10:18 PM EST up reply actions

What are you talking about?

Other boards? How have I trashed any boards? I was poking fun at Slurve because every year he tells everyone to send him their top 50 list so he can rank them via excel and every year he never has completed results. I am unsure what you are talking about.

Whoa, whoa, whoa...

I’ve attempted the community compilation list only a few times. Last year was the ONLY time it didn’t produce anything. If you went through everything I went through last year, you wouldn’t be tossing that around so lightly.

Relax

I was obviously joking hence the words ‘poking fun’ and the ;). Trust me, if you knew everything I was going through THIS year you would understand that I don’t sweat message board humor.

I understand

some shots coming way for that and deservedly so to varying degrees, but the way it was portrayed as “every year” needed to be clarified. No worries – just didn’t want that turning into something it’s not.

by slurve on Nov 3, 2008 11:30 AM EST up reply actions

...and again

No complaint was aimed at you or pinstripes. Again, I appreciate the effort. Was merely a reflection on what doing a community list on this website has devolved into the last few years. This used to be a really good/cooperative group for that type of task. It probably still is, just that the few have bastardized the proccess for the many.

by slurve on Nov 3, 2008 6:04 AM EST up reply actions

Why...

Is there no love for F-Mart. He has a lot of potential and has proven to be solid at a pretty high level. I know he is injury prone, but if he over comes that, then he will be a star. He could be a perenial all star center fielder in the Carlos Beltran mold. A plyer like that should be top 25 easy. but he seems to be getting no love at all.

by joegonzo on Nov 2, 2008 8:54 PM EST reply actions

He seems to get penalized for being a super hyped Mets prospect.

I don’t know if it is fair but it seems to hold him back. I hope he reaches his potential.

+1

with everything you just said.

by Rob Castellano on Nov 2, 2008 9:24 PM EST up reply actions

Fernando

He gets both over and under rated. He’s not close to being a Beltran type; he can play some CF right now, but he’s not nearly that toolsy. He really doesn’t run well enough to think he’ll stay in CF long term. He should be solid in a corner.

On the other hand, his bat is going to be special. That’s a very sweet swing. And he did put up an .849 OPS from May 1 onward. Leave him at that level in 2009, and he’ll probably put up the more gaudy numbers some want to see.

But really, the issue with Fernando shouldn’t be the numbers; his performance has excellent for his age. He really just needs to stay healthy more consistently to rank higher.

Tabata as a tester

Look, I ‘m not saying he is next or anything like that. But, we’re already getting to the point that anyone who is going to be in the top 50 should at least be among the testers. And given Tabata’s history as a highly ranked prospect and his performance in the Pittsburgh system, I think we should at least be given a chance pretty soon to see how seriously people take that last month of his season. Let me put it another way, how surprised would you be if Tabata ends up taking a serious run at ROY in 2010. There are an awful lot of other players who are going to be filling the back half of this list that would surprise me a lot more if that happened to them than Tabata.

by Dalman on Nov 2, 2008 10:08 PM EST reply actions

I would be out-and-out stunned if Tabata makes a serious run at ROY in 2010

Well, to be a serious RoY contender

all you have to do in some years is have an OPS around .800. It’s not out of the question that Tabata will do that, though 2010 seems a bit early

by OldProspects on Nov 3, 2008 12:26 AM EST up reply actions

Maybe so, but Brett Wallace, Justin Smoak, and the best of that ridiculous class of college 1B

are mostly going to be rookies that year. And considering that Tabata hasn’t even managed an .800 OPS in the minors…

Ramirez???

Now, this one is REAL head-scratcher. Ramirez is currently leading this poll bey a good margin. There is no way this guy should be this high. Very questionable to stick at catcher. Good stick but old for his (hitters) leagues and there are many better hitters. If I had know he would get this much support, I would have voted for Beckham as an anti-Ramirez vote. I thought some of the pitchers on so far were too high, but if Ramirez gets on that really affects the credibility of the list IMHO.

by rhd on Nov 2, 2008 11:51 PM EST reply actions

He's the same age as Matt LaPorta

who’s #10. Why doesn’t that make the list not credible?

by OldProspects on Nov 3, 2008 12:28 AM EST up reply actions

And who are the hitters better than Ramirez?

TheSouthWing.com - A Magazine of essays, prose and poems

by OldProspects on Nov 3, 2008 1:13 AM EST up reply actions

LaPorta's a weird case age-wise

He’s the rare top prospect who played all four years of college ball. While it makes him older for his levels, it’s not like the guy was going to jump straight to the majors. Ramirez’s age is more of a red flag, because he started in pro ball in 2004, though to be fair, his performances were almost always strong, and I think the constant trades slowed down his promotion schedule (along with concerns about his defense).

by aap212 on Nov 3, 2008 4:35 AM EST up reply actions

To be fair

Ramirez had been getting a lot of posts in the prior polls. There is certainly support for him from within the ranks of people actually posting on this site.

by siddfynch on Nov 3, 2008 12:58 AM EST up reply actions

23...

Might be slightly old for AA, but I still think it is in the acceptable range. Especially when we are talking about catchers. Max Ram has not repeated a league since Rookie Ball which he played in when he was 19 and when he was 20 (I don’t know for sure why Atlanta sent him back, but I am guessing that it is because they moved him from 3B to C). Since then he has moved up a level every season and last year split time between AA and AAA (would have had more time in AAA but got injured in his first game for close to a month I think).

"My mom always taught me it's better to laugh at yourself than to laugh at others. She was so wrong. ;)" -Pedrophile

by Boxkutter on Nov 3, 2008 2:01 AM EST up reply actions

repeating

max didn’t repeat a league at all….the braves have two rookie level teams, the gcl braves and danville….almost every prospect they have goes through both teams in their development…..oh, and max went from 3b at gcl to catcher at danville, otherwise his gcl numbers would likely have at least warranted a trip to low-A

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

by biggentleben on Nov 3, 2008 8:00 AM EST up reply actions

I think he's being underrated by some because of the logjam Texas at catcher right now.

Ranking the player and not the player in the abstract is tough sometimes. If he was in, say, Cincinnati and had a clear shot at winning a full time catcher’s gig going into next ST, wouldn’t he zoom up a lot of people’s charts here?

And as someone who watched him in pretty much all his starts this season, he’s really not that bad. He’s not good, but he’s not an overmatched butcher back there or anything. If he hits 300/400/500 at catcher even with below average defense, that’s really, really valuable.

It was hard going with him over Beckham, who I love, but in the end that’s what I did. Maybe it was homer bias. Maybe not.

by thedirkatron on Nov 3, 2008 3:24 AM EST up reply actions

I don't think you offered a single reason to dislike Max here.

He won’t stick at C? Fine. His bat is huge. He’s by far the best, most advanced hitter left on the board, and while I can understand why Beckham would be getting votes here as well, there’s something to be said for a guy who can step into the majors next year and be a solid contribtuer, even if he’s limited to DH. Note that I don’t think it’s 100% that he is limited to DH, just that if he were to be, he’d still be a very useful player to have around.

by mraver on Nov 3, 2008 8:03 AM EST up reply actions

Voted for Beckham

Bu I’d add Arrieta and Jordan Zimmerman to the list. Arrieta had a fantastic year at A+ and had a very good performance in Beijing. Zimmerman dominated A+ for a month before being sent up to AA.

I know that begin in the Nats system results in less attention at times, but Zimmerman has all the signs of being a very good ML pitcher.
