Slogging Away on D-Backs

Still slogging away with the Arizona system.

Is it just me, or has this system really gone downhill? I'm giving an awful lot of Grade Cs so far.

Maybe

they’ll get some prospects back in getting draft picks for Randy Johnson, Juan Cruz, and Brandon Lyon

Picks

Johnson, Cruz, Dunn, and Hudson should all bring back picks. The expectation is the D’Backs will have 8 of the top 75 picks or so.

45

I whiffed on the number pad. The D’Backs expect to have 7 of the top 45 or so picks.

I'd be surprised

if the D-Backs get picks for Hudson as I don’t think any team would sign him before the D-Backs have to offer him arbitration and I think they don’t really want to get stuck paying his salary.

Disagree

There is no way the D’Backs don’t offer him arby. The best possible scenario for them is they get him on a one year deal.

Top heavy drafting

they seem to have spent a lot on 1st round picks so possibly they have compensated by taking cheaper options later which might explain the lack of depth but that’s just a (somewhat) educated guess

draft

dont think they got much this year, or last

They're quite young at the MLB level though

This was discussed a bit when BP posted their top 11 of this system. Upton, Connor Jackson, Chris Young, Reynolds, Drew, Miguel Montero, and Scherzer are all 26 and under, so that’s a pretty solid young core (if only they still could count Quentin among those ranks as well). Two of their top 3 picks in 2008 were on college closers, so they were going for quick impact to the big league roster over developing talent.

But yeah, graduations and the Haren trade have gutted this system.
