Great trade for the Marlins
I think this was excellent for the Fish. They
a) Save money
b) Net a closing prospect with elite stuff that hasn’t had his clock started yet.
Ceda needs some more work, but I think he could be ready at some point in 2009 in some middle relief role. He’s showed improvement in his control in the past 2 years, although more work is needed.
As for the Cubs side, I dislike the trade right now as a Cubs fan. I’m not huge on Gregg, and he’s not going to make substantially less than market value. Giving up a trade asset like Ceda for him bothers me. More importantly, unless Gregg gets flipped, which I doubt, spending such a big asset on Gregg suggests a key role in 2009 for him, which suggests that Kerry could be gone. If we keep both, then okay, I can stomach this, making our bullpen deeper. If we flip Gregg, which I doubt, then gotta wait and see.
This also suggests, to me, that the Cubs efforts to land Hermida, which have been speculated upon, may have hit some sort of roadblock.

Cubs
Could this be a move to try and help land peavy. I nad heard that the Cubs were trying to involve a third team to get the pitching the Padres wanted. With Hoffman leaving could Gregg be flipped in the package to get Peavy.
I know there are reports a trade with Atlanta has been reached but I hadn’t read anything definitive on that yet.

re:
the question i’d have is, why would the padres have interest in Kevin Gregg? Gregg’s arb numbers will bring him close to setup arm market value. Furthermore, considering Gregg’s age, does he fit in a rebuilding plan, considering he’s a free agent in what, 2011 (too lazy to check right now).
I mean, I hope you are right, but I don’t see it.

Personally, I was assuming Gregg replaces Howry as the primary righty setup guy. I can’t imagine they’ll downgrade from Wood to Gregg as closer.

Most expectations
are that Wood is gone, and Hendry basically said that today.

My bad
I didn’t look up Greggs service time before posting that. I thought he had another couple years of team control left.

I'm sure the Pads would've wanted Ceda a hellova lot more than they'd want Gregg

Then
They shouldn’t have traded Ceda to the Cubs for the services of Todd Walker.

Rule 5 Draft
I do no have a date on when Cerda is signed but I believe he is eligible for the rule 5 draft this year. In that case, maybe either instead of proctecting him or not wanting to, the Cubs decided to trade him for Gregg who bring returns through another trade.

re: Rule 5 draft
Is there really a chance they were leaving one of their best prospect unprotected though?

Orginizational Situation
The cubs have a full pen already and Marmol could easily be the closer for many years to come barring injury. Ceda would really be wasted working as a setup man or in the bullpen. In reality, Gregg will probably get more than Ceda right now in a trade due to him being proven and closing recently. Ceda is far from a sure thing right now also with his control not being the greatest, though I do think he is a very good prospect.

With Wood gone
The pen doesn’t look so full. The potential is still there, but the margins are slimmer now.
Here’s the thing – Gregg will get close to market value in arbitration (for a setup arm). I doubt anyone would’ve paid him closer rates if he was a free agent.
With the Cubs system thin on prospects, I would’ve preferred (picking a random name) signing Brandon Lyon for a tiny bit more and keeping Ceda.

I do agree the trade was not good for the Cubs
What I am trying to say is that the Cubs might not have valued him that much in the organisation’s future plans. If this is so, then flipping him for whatever value they can get is not really a bad move, though Gregg’s value remains to be seen.
That being said, Gregg I think is overvalued right now due to him closing the past 2 seasons. If some club sees him as one, the Cubs could get a decent return. If they intend to keep him in the bullpen or as a setup man, that would be horrible idea of course. I agree with you in it is not extremely difficult to find a cheap/effective bullpen arm.

re:
I think most expectations are that he’ll be kept as a Plan B to Carlos Marmol, or as Marmol’s setup man, with guys like Andrew Cashner and perhaps Dan McDaniel perhaps getting fast-tracked, along with Brian Schlitter, Dumas Garcia, and others perhaps being upper level arms that could provide help if need be.
by toonsterwu on Nov 13, 2008 4:57 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
btw
don’t mean to suggest that Cashner or McDaniel sees the bigs this year, but rather, that they may move up the ladder quickly.

Good point
I just do not have faith in Gregg preforming well, even in a setup role, when he is not pitching half his games in one of the largest park in the Majors. Also, he is going to be overpayed really unless he is a closer.

Yeah
It always sucks to have too many good relievers in the bullpen. Good thing the Cubs were able to stay out of that situation!

Yeah
You can never have too many A+/AA relievers most of whom never amount to much.

I love this trade for the Marlins........
Kevin Gregg was awful……He’d come in and you could hear a collective moan from all 182 Marlins’ fans at the game……..Ceda profiles as an elite closer IMO. The guy is a stud. How and why the Cubs ever moved him is beyond me…….

Marlins
they had a good trade history with the Cubs

Matt Lindstrom
Does this “seal the deal” on him starting next season as the Marlins’ closer? I would guess so…

awful?
his overall numbers were very good, but he blew saves like crazy, which clearly you can’t do, the problem was they threw him way too much, but that was partly because he basically wanted to pitch all the time in any situation, which meant he would pitch and be tired on a third day and of course blow a lead when it mattered, i think he could set up for the cubs and be good, for one year, then cashner and whoever else can take over, neither ceda nor cashner were doing that this year, does this mean that samarskdhnskdhka is starting or getting traded?

Ceda...
While I agree that Ceda looks like a solid closing option in the future, the kid is getting huge. Last I heard listed at 275 lbs…going here and guess that is not all muscle. I am not a huge fan of this deal either….is that Rule 5 stuff posted above true?
by goose102977 on Nov 13, 2008 4:07 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Ceda was not up for Rule 5
I believe it would be next year that he would’ve been up for it.
by toonsterwu on Nov 13, 2008 4:31 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Are you sure
If he was signed as an international at 16/17, I believe this year would he first one for rule 5 eligibilty. Remember, Marcos Carvajal was drafted at age 20 and he was signed at 16, the rules were recently amended though pushing the date back a year for international signings if I am correct.

re:
I was basing it off the esteemed Arizona Phil’s report over at TCR. Let me take a look.
He was 19 when he joined the Padres organization. I assume he signed a year earlier, at age 18, which means yes, he had 1 more year to go before Rule 5.

It’s official. The Cubs will not be bringing Kerry Wood back.

steal for the fish
heck of a pick up, now got lindstrom and soon ceda in the pen. Possibly in the future Tucker as well they have a nice collection of arms. Plus cubs arms we get seem to develope well (nolasco, pinto for example).
