Need to Cut a Few Minor Leaguers

This is similar to another post I saw, I need to cut a few minor leaguers from my squad as well.  12 team dynasty, 23 minor leaguers.  Need to cut possibly 5 players.  Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

My Position Players

Jesus Montero, Carlos Santana, Justin Smoak, Logan Morrison, Emilio Bonifacio, Pedro Alvarez, Mike Moustakas, Billy Rowell, Michael Stanton, Engel Beltre

My Pitchers

David Price, Jeremy Hellickson, Jordan Zimmermann, Jarrod Parker, Jake Arrieta, Daniel Cortes, Martin Perez, Danny Duffy, Fautino de los Santos, Ross Detwiler, Andrew Brackman, Julio Teheran, Chuck Lofgren

Also, if you wouldn't mind letting me know which 5 players you absolutely would keep no matter what, that would be awesome too. Thanks.

My Input

For as many players as you’d drop, my first five in this order are…

1. Bonifacio
2. Lofgren
3. Rowell
4. Detwiler
5. De Los Santos

And my 5 keepers are Price, Montero, Moustakas, Alvarez, and something between Beltre, Smoak, or Perez. I think Smoak is the smarter choice but Perez or Beltre could make you look like an absolute genius in a few years.

De Los Santos

Are you really concerned about the TJ surgery with him? I still think he could be electric, and even if he’s not a starter, he could be a great closer.

I Don't Not Like Him

I just don’t see more players I’d take in front of him.

Well

Bonifacio, Brackman, Lofgren and Rowell all stand out as cuts.

Don't know if I agree about Brackman

Considering the Yanks gave him a major league contract, it might be worth holding onto him to see if you can’t catch lightning in a bottle. If he rounds into shape soon, he might pay dividends in the relative near future.

Here we go!!

On BRACKMAN, this was KG from BP in a live chat right now:

David (NY): Thoughts on Andrew Brackman? is his stuff all the way back from TJS?

Kevin Goldstein: I’m still not a believer. He’ll make the top 11, but there will be other pitchers ahead of him. It’s hard to ignore the ceiling, but at the same time, he’s 23, has never pitched in a pro game other than Hawaii, has a TJ, and has no record of sustained success ANYWHERE, EVER as an amateur. That’s way too many red flags for me. People who have seen him in Hawaii are saying the same stuff they said when he was an NC State. Love the body and the velo, but after that, not much else to love. Not a big fan.

Exactly! Stay away from this guy!

DMB League

I have a deeper minor league question. I have to cut two of these. I know I fall in love with my players, so I need a more neutral opinion.

Angel Guzman
Tony Butler
Zach Braddock
Matt Antonelli
Casey Crosby
Alan Horne
Warner Madrigal
Craig Italiano
Sean Rodriguez
Chris Nelson

Madrigal and Braddock

Madrigal won’t be anything more than a setup guy, and Braddock hasn’t showed much.

by cwhitman412 on Nov 11, 2008 6:35 PM EST up reply actions

Many candidates...

This must be a VERY deep league.

I would probably cut Horne, whose career has been one long disappointment. Between Butler and Braddock for the other cut. They, Crosby and Guzman all have had injury problems. Guzman can contribute in MLB now if he’s healthy. Crosby still has a lot of upside and is the youngest pitcher. Braddock has an excellent K rate, so I’d probably keep him over Butler. I’d keep Madrigal, who reportedly has closer stuff and is already in MLB.

DMB

I have a good MLB team and solid prospects. I understand these guys are not cream of the crop guys, but anyone who will have any value to a real MLB team will have DMB value. I am looking for the guys who have the least ability to be above replacement level. Thanks for the input.

Throw a dart,

none will have any fantasy value.

by rothe on Nov 11, 2008 8:29 PM EST up reply actions

Eh

I’d hang onto Antonelli, Rodriguez, Italiano and Nelson.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

by Brickhaus on Nov 11, 2008 9:47 PM EST up reply actions

how about....

you stop being an ass…….if you don’t value minors, then that’s your business. this guy simply wanted some advice……

by psugator on Nov 11, 2008 11:28 PM EST up reply actions

My cuts

If I had to cut 5, it would be these, in order:
- Lofgren
- Rowell
- Beltre
- DeLosSantos
- Brackman
But I would try to hang on to the last 2, depending on who else is available to pick up. I’d try to keep Bonfacio, even tho his upside is probably the lowest of anyone besides Lofgren, because he perhaps is being handed the starting job now in Florida.

I would keep these 5 above all others:
- Price
- Alvarez
- Moustakas
- Stanton
- Smoak

by rhd on Nov 11, 2008 6:42 PM EST reply actions

My 2 cents

Cut 5, in this order:

1) Rowell
2) Lofgren
3) Perez
4) Beltre
5) Duffy

Vogt early, Vogt often.

by Brickhaus on Nov 11, 2008 7:17 PM EST reply actions

No way

Cutting Duffy and Beltre? One of those is SURE to come back and bite you in the ass.

Keith Law: Idiot.

by alskor on Nov 11, 2008 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

Beltre maybe

Beltre is high risk, high upside. Duffy is low risk, low upside. The rest of the guys have a better combination than that. At least that’s my view.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

by Brickhaus on Nov 11, 2008 9:44 PM EST up reply actions

How is Duffy

Low risk, low upside?

Totally disagree. He doesnt have a blazing fastball, but he’s been dominant at a young age and has good stuff. Lots of upside there.

Keith Law: Idiot.

by alskor on Nov 11, 2008 9:47 PM EST up reply actions

Upon further review

I’d probably keep Duffy over Bonaficio anyway.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

by Brickhaus on Nov 11, 2008 9:50 PM EST up reply actions

Thoughts

On the hitters side, there’s a pretty clear gap between Rowell & Bonifacio vs everyone else. They’ve got the least upside and you can probably gamble on upside at the fringes of your minors considering all the top shelf hitting talent you have listed. The only real argument I can think of for keeping Bonifacio would be if you were reeeally thin at the middle infield positions. So that’s two.

On the pitching side, Lofgren immediately stands out as a guy that won’t be in almost anyone’s top50 pitching prospects. Detwiler is another one that had a crummy year and you can probably afford to pass on. For the last spot, it’s probably a tossup between DLS and Brackman. Decide which TJ survivor you want to root for and keep him. I’d probably keep DLS since there’s some professional track record for him prior to TJ. Some will suggest Cortes, Duff, or even Perez, but they’re all high upside arms I would guess at least as likely to pan out as DLS/Brackman.

To Summarize:
Cut: Bonifacio, Rowell, Lofgren, Detwiler, Brackman.

On the keeper side, there’s four easy keeps. Alvarez, Moustakas, and Smoak all project as middle-of-the-order, MVP caliber bats. Price is maybe the top prospect in baseball (depends how you rate him vs Wieters) so you obviously keep him. None of the other pitchers are enough of a sure thing that I would pass over Stanton, even with some peoples’ concerns over his K-rate. Morrison and Montero are probably the next two hitters, although with Smoak and possibly Alvarez you’ve already got two 1B/DH types so no real reason to load up on another. If you’re hard up for pitching, you might keep Parker as the fifth, but I’d rather just try and trade Stanton for phat lewt to fill the hole in that case.

Keep: Price, Alvarez, Moustakas, Smoak, Stanton

by Ophidian on Nov 11, 2008 7:50 PM EST reply actions

ok...

Detwiler, Bonifacio, Loftgren, Rowell and Perez.

by David Tokarz on Nov 11, 2008 8:10 PM EST reply actions

I agree with most of what has been said so far

But I think you have to keep Montero if you can only keep 5, if only because there is a chance he might catch at the big-league level. There’s no defense in fantasy, so as long as he makes it to the bigs as a catcher (a big if, I understand), he will have huge value. His offensive ceiling as a 1b is certainly comparable to that of Smoak, Alvarez, Moustakas and Stanton.

My Choices

1. Lofgren
2. Bonifacio
3. Perez
4. Brackman
5. De Los Santos – due to injury only

On Detwiler, it has been disapointing so far but I think its just to early for a pitching prospect that young with that much raw talent.

Detwiler

I’m getting the sense that he’s just not the guy he was advertised as coming into the 2007 draft. In a few places I’ve read that he just doesn’t have the stuff that people said he had.
