need to cut 3-5 guys. ....please help

I'm in a 12-team mixed league with spots for 30 minors. Now that the season is over I've been able to find a few sleepers...not a lot but a few...the only problem is that my roster is already at 30. so i have to cut a few....that's where i thought you could help......i'm a bit of a homer and sometimes have trouble accurately assessing the strengths and weaknesses of my team.....could you help?

1. lars anderson (DEFINITE KEEPER)

2. villalona (DEFINITE KEEPER)

**3. gaby sanchez (started raking once he left the fsl. will most likely be the marlins' 1b in 2009 unless uggla is moved there)

what are your thoughts on keeping sanchez? i'm keeping teixeira and billy butler, who both qualify at 1b. not sure that i need to keep sanchez, too.

4. neftali soto (reds)---think he's a definite keeper

5. beau mills (indians)--haven't seen his name much....was drafted in '07 and hit well in high-a carolina league...nice power, a few too many Ks, nice OBP. thoughts? peter gammons said during the all star game that mills would become a mainstay in the HR derby for whatever that is worth

**6.  chris marrero (3b/of/1b for nationals): had a bad year in the SAL but still a decent prospect. what are you thoughts?

7. tyler flowers: definite keeper

8. jonathan lucroy (brewers): just keeps hitting but is stuck behind salome.....what are your thoughts?

9. angel salome...yeah he's small...so what? he's raked at every stop.......he's a keeper

10. travis d'arnaud: still young but raked last year. what are you thoughts?

11. kyle skipworth (marlins): first-round pick of the marlins. he's a keeper

YES I HAVE 4 CATCHERS IN THE MINORS AND HAVE MCCANN IN THE MAJORS. DO I NEED TO KEEP ALL 4 OF THOSE MINOR-LEAGUE CATCHERS?

12. corey brown (oakland): don't know much about him

13. danny murphy (2b/of, Mets): i have howie kendrick on my big league team and like having murphy as a second option in case kendrick gets hurt, which seems to be par for the course

**14. kelvin deleon (yanks): I think this guy may be too far away. should i cut him? what are your thoughts?

15. ryan westmoreland (red sox): a 5-tool guy the red sox just loved. got a huge bonus. still far away but i like him. what are you thoughts?

**16. wendell fairley (giants): i guess i could cut this guy...i had him all of last year and knew that he was going to be a project. should i hold on to him? what are you thoughts?

17. anthony hewitt (Phils): huge upside....have to keep him

18. desmond jennings: i know he got hurt but i have a mancrush...he's a keeper

19. brett anderson: one of the better sp prospects in all of the minors. a keeper

20. danny duffy (royals): another nice young SP i will keep

21. fautino de los santos....he'll be even better after his TJ

22. neftali feliz (definite keeper)

23. jeremy jeffress: could've taken travis snider but chose the arm instead. still don't regret the decision...flying under the radar right now...love the dwight gooden comps...also love it that he was called up to AA at the end of last yr. i think he's a keeper

24. michael main (rangers): don't know much about him. but it seems everything i've read has been positive....what are you thoughts?

25. ethan martin: another mancrush.....and i love how the dodgers groom their pitchers

26.neil ramirez (rangers): i think he's a keeper...........nice system the rangers are putting together, huh?

27. bradley holt: i'm partial to velo..and holt has it. i just hope he can develop something else. i hear his curve is a plus pitch but that he can't spot it....what are your thoughts?

28. chris tillman: keeper. i love this guy

29. aaron laffey: probably should cut this guy

30. carlos truinfel: i 'm not as high on him as some of the minorleagueball readers. but according to what i've read on this site, i think he's a keeper

in my opinion the league is set up in such a way that arms NEED to be stockpiled. i also think i have entirely too many catchers. i'd also like to rid my squad of guys who aren't fantasy-valuable. and as if this isn't obvious, guys who profile as relievers or back-of-the-rotation starters don't do much for me.

so there's your penn state pride................your opinion of these guys is much appreciated. i've starred the guys who are questionable keepers. i'm guessing that i need to clear 3-5 spots. thanks again

its been a while man, its Julian… nice to see you around…

Im not familiar with your league but DeLeon does seem to be lightyears away… and im not sure Danny Murphy or Laffey are worth their roster spot, they are what they are, a backup and a 5 starte/swingman…

I would get rid of those 3 guys

seems a lot of people..

are down on murphy……..but he’s hit everywhere he’s been. and he has value as a 2b, no?

by psugator on Nov 11, 2008 5:22 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

IF

he sticks at 2B. If it wasnt for your Kendrick thing I would have said Murphy… but he’s a pretty solid bet for this coming year at least. Its been hashed out a hundred times on this site, though. I think there’s a Murphy discussion thread on the sidebar right now. Im not a huge fan, but he’s a known commodity at a position of need for you.

Id drop:

Fairley
Holt
DeLeon
Corey Brown
Martin

Youre underrating Laffey. He has a decent chance to be a solid, dependable plus in every category except K’s. He’s also already a mildly valuable fantasy starting pitcher. So there’s little risk. Besides, if starting pitching is as rare in your league as you say (it is in mine) Laffey could be perfect trade fodder to fill a hole a month or two into the season. Someone will be desperate for starters.

Under no circumstances drop:
Main
FDLS
Westmoreland
Mills
Duffy

If I were you Id try to trade some guys I think are overrated – like Triunfel, Villalona, Neftali Feliz. Those guys are so far away that if you can get something pretty good for them you should do it – just on sheer odds they pan out. Dont give them away by any means, but if you can get someone to overpay I would certainly keep an open mind.

Also, I find it amazing I always have to tell people this, but: DONT WORRY ABOUT POSITIONAL SCARCITY IN YOUR MINOR LEAGUES!! Who the hell knows when these guys will have fantasy value and beyond that, emerge as dependable fantasy starters. Most likely it wont be until their third major league season – so we could be talking five years down the line, and for the guys above like Villalona and Triunfel it could be six or more years until they are dependable fantasy options you would be satisfied entering the season with them holding down a position. They could pull a Delmon Young and start off slow as hell and still only be 22, 23, 24, 25 and you cant give up on them, because it still looks like they have a decent chance to be a star. Think Adrian Beltre. In the meantime how many fantasy seasons have been ruined because you handed Villalona a job at age 22 and he doesnt start to rake until age 26? You know…?

The other positional scarcity issue is that you stockpiling a position that’s hard to fill (like catcher) is GREAT! Fantasy Baseball is a zero sum world. There are only so many decent options playing at any time. Having all the best catchers or shortstops in the league is HUGE. Its taking wins/points away from your opponent. When you have a list like this you really cant worry about positions – take the best bets/upside guys and sort it out later. If they all pan out you’ll be in great shape to make a trade if you have to fill a hole on your team.

i'm guessing that you guys are suggesting ...

that i cut holt because he profiles as a reliever? if he can spot the curve and maybe develop a third pitch then he becomes a stud in the rotation…i guess you guys don’t see that happening? i happen to like holt but i think i’m getting caught up in his velocity. with only a fastball i don’t know how he could possibly fit in a rotation…is that your thinking, too?

by psugator on Nov 11, 2008 5:33 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Project Pitchers

are not good fantasy minor leaguers, IMHO.

Guys who could go either way are an additional risk, and pitching prospects are already risky enough, you know? Its one more complication that could derail any eventual fantasy value.

Its not like Holt doesnt have value, but there a lot of guys with velocity who could end up either way and some of them will be available again next time you draft – and with less risk. I say take the more sure thing right now. Holt might be more intriguing than most, but that doesnt change the risky nature of the type of prospect he is… Id be happy to keep him if you had room, but you have better guys…

Feliz

Doesn’t belong in a group with Villalona and Triunfel. He spent a fair amount of time in AA last year (Dominating) and will be in AAA by midseason next year, possibly reaching the majors.

by rothe on Nov 11, 2008 8:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree for the most part

I included him because of the chance he ends up in relief. It would be very hard for me to give up on him, personally. Others on this site raised my concerns with reports about him… I still like him plenty, but there is a touch of concern in my eyes now.

There is a CHANCE that all of these guys end up in relief,

Might as well hitch your wagon to the guy with the best stuff who may hit the majors next season.

by rothe on Nov 11, 2008 9:17 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Id say there's a higher chance with Neftali than most

and Im hardly the first to suggest it.

I'd Drop...

Chris Marrero – I just don’t believe in him.
Aaron Laffey – nothing better than back of the rotation
Kelvin DeLeon – way far away
Corey Brown
David Murphy? – I love murph and I’m a mets fan, but I don’t know if he’ll stick at 2B and he’s merely an average or slightly above average OF. Depends how close to the majors you need someone at that position.

Not sure otherwise. You have too many catchers (I actually count 5 unless you think Flowers is a 1B). Is it possible to still trade one of them away right now? If I were to get rid of one, it would probably be Salome. He is hitting, but I think he is the least likely to produce in the future.

As for Holt – he currently is a starter and will remain a starter until otherwise stated. His curve and change apparently were improving enough to have BA gush about him. So he has to have done something right.

Also, I too wouldn’t classify Villalona/Triunfel/Soto/Hewitt as “definite keepers”. They are good, but not definite.

by thudean on Nov 11, 2008 5:39 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I have to ask

Since when are guys who hit .325+ with isolated power of .170+ at age 19 not definite keepers? Thats what Soto just did last year in Dayton.

by dougdirt on Nov 11, 2008 6:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

My Suggestion

I’d drop in this order…

1. DeLeon
2. Laffey
3. Marrero
4. Fairley

by cwhitman412 on Nov 11, 2008 5:55 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

doesn't fairley's pedigree hold water here?

the guy was a first-round pick. are we already declaring him a bust? or are we saying that we simply don’t respect the giants and their scouts?

by psugator on Nov 11, 2008 6:40 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't drop Fairley

Yeah his first year was terrible, but it was only 50 games. He has a shitload of tools and is still young. And I think the Giants picked him knowing there was a better chance than not that he’d become a bust. The Giants had 6 of the first 51 picks in the draft in 07, so they probably figured it would be fine to take one project player with one of em.

by boonitez on Nov 11, 2008 8:03 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I'd actually consider cutting Hewitt

It just seems the odds of him ever becoming a legitimate hitter are pretty slim, despite the impressive tools. Although I guess with a roster that deep, you can afford to carry a few low-probability projects. I’d definitely keep De Leon over him though, given that De Leon actually looks like a solid hitter with power already.

And if arms need to be stockpiled, I’d hesitate on cutting Laffey. In my experience in leagues that require a ton of pitching depth, guys who could emerge out of spring training with a rotation spot are good to have on the roster over pipe dream complex-league projects.

by jibs on Nov 11, 2008 6:22 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

i have a hard time cutting Hewitt right now...

i knew when i drafted him that he was going to be a project. so i can’t be impatient and cut him right away…..

by psugator on Nov 11, 2008 6:39 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

My cuts

- DeLeon
- Holt
- D’Arnaud or Lucroy (your choice)
- Hewitt
- Fairley

If you really believe in Hewitt and/or Fairley, you could try to keep them. You might then cut both the above catchers.

I’d consider cutting Martin, too, but you sound like you know more about him than I do.

Re: the MLB-ready players, it depends on how easily you could get them back in the regular draft/auction. But I’d keep Laffey, if possible. Could be a nice back-end starter. Did a nice job for me last year before he got hurt. I’d also keep Murphy, who looks like he can hit in MLB and who might be the everyday 2Bman for the Mets. Similar thing w Sanchez.

Michael Main

He has been rated the Rangers #1 prospect by many who have rated our farm system. He is a definite keeper.

by CRUSHDAVIS on Nov 11, 2008 9:18 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

My cuts....

The obvious cuts for me are:

Corey Brown
Kelvin Deleon
Wendell Fairley
Anthony Hewitt

On the bubble:

Neil Ramirez

Pretty much all of the guys I listed were both very far away from helping, and not as highly regarded as your other far off guys. Corey Brown is a bit more advanced, but wasn’t that great a pick, 59th over all, typical Oakland lower and plate discipline guy, but strikes out too much and doesn’t hit for average. Kelvin DeLeon got a $1.1M bonus, but was part of that big kickback scandal, may not have been worth it, and has yet to appear in the US. Wedell Fairley got $1M at 29th overall, but didn’t do much as a 20 year old in rookie ball (in the lowest level- one of the complex leagues). Hewitt is a similar case; 24th overall, but a .555 OPS in the GCL.

Neil Ramirez would be a tougher cut for me. Got a $1M bonus over slot at pick 44, and then unlike some of the guys above, performed at a reasonable level, with nice numbers in A- ball. I still have trouble keeping him over a guy like Holt, who was even more dominant, has at least as good a ceiling, and was a higher pick, (very slightly) higher bonus, and has a chance to help sooner. Or, over Martin, who was the consensus best HS pitcher in his draft and got $1.7M from the Dodgers at pick 15.

It’s not that any of these guys are bad picks, but you are really loaded with guys who may not help for 5 years. If your MLB squad is really good, and you are sure you will have no need for a guy like Laffey, then I suppose you could cut him. But Laffey and Murphy seem to me to be guys who could help next year. Murphy will be ordinary, about an .850 OPS, in LF, but I think you have to hang on and see if he qualifies at 2B before dropping him.
