Alex or Arnold Leon
Can anyone give me the story on this guy. He was pitching for Stockton, but it appears he is back in the Mexican leagues. Do the A's still own the rights to Leon? He appeared to pitch well and I know at one point there was talk that he would shoot right up to the majors. I know they have a packed system, but I am not aware of any other case of a player playing in the Mexican leagues while still being under control of a major league team.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

He is now Full Property of the Oakland A’s. When they signed him last offseason, the A’s promised to give him back to his Mexican Team by June 15th, 2008… or something like that. He should start in Stockton next season – Not sure if he’ll start or not.

Ahhhhh. Thanks. I remember he had some fan fare around his signing and I stole him late in a draft in a DMB league. I stashed him, but was coming up on decision time and wanted to make sure I wasn’t holding onto a guy who had gotten injured or found his way out of MLB for other reasons. Thanks for the story.

The A's bought his rights last year, but as part of the purchase they agreed to loan him back to Saltillo for this season
He’s a major sleeper, BTW. It’s not very often that you can find 20-year-olds who already have substantial experience getting 27-year-old hitters out (and in a brutally hitter-friendly league to boot). He has plus command of a low-90s fastball that figures to pick up a few ticks by the time he reaches his prime. Last I heard the A’s plan to move him into the rotation, probably starting next season.
He got buried a little bit by the avalanche of new prospects coming into the system through trades, the draft, and the international period. But he’s good. The team brass was all over him in spring training last year talking about his arm and command.

Leon may just be my favorite A's prospect
He’s dominated every level he’s pitched, he’s got the ARL in his favor, he’s polished, and he has the stuff. He’s the exact type of signing I had opined the A’s to sign in the International Market. I hope that next year sees him as the ace of the Midland staff. But if the A’s were to be cautious with him, I could understand it too.

I know around the time he was signed, some people compared him to Joakim Soria. Whether or not that is because he is Mexican or because of his stuff, I don’t know. But, I know a lot of people think he could start (like Soria), but may be better suited for relief. Either way, he is an interesting prospect to track.

Anyone know why he only threw 14+ innings for Saltillo?
BTW I agree fully: this guy is a major sleeper.
