Scott Kazmir trade?
Hey everyone, I was just thinking about the Rays and their stacked pitching. With the seemingly inevitable trade of Peavy, could the Rays set Kazmir up as a consolation prize for a desperate second place finisher in the Peavy sweepstakes? They both have comparably attractive contracts:
Kazmir - three-year, $28.5 million extension w/2012 club option. 2008: $3.785 million, 2009: $6 million, 2010: $8 million, 2011: $12 million, 2012: $13.5 million club option w/$2.5 million buyout
Peavy - three-year, $52 million extension w/2013 club option and limited NTC. 2008: $6 million, 2009: $8 million club option w/$500,000 buyout, 2010: $15 million, 2011: $16 million, 2012: $17 million, 2013: $22 million club option w/$4 million buyout
Kazmir's is obviously cheaper, but he also carries a higher injury risk, making the contracts comparable (no numbers here, just logic/intuition). So just out of curiousity, what type of package do you think the Rays could receive for Kazmir, and from whom?

Why?
The only reason they would want to is because his value’s peaked. But if anything, his value is at a low right now. Wouldn’t it make sense to at least wait until he’s healthy?
If they get overwhelmed on an offer I could see it
They certainly don’t need to trade him with that contract, but it certainly wouldn’t hurt to see what some other teams might give up to get him. They’ve got the pitching depth to absorb his departure if it makes up for a deficiency in another area.
In terms of what specifically he could net, I suppose maybe something a bit better than what the rumored Peavy packages have been. Not because Kazmir is better, but rather because Kazmir doesn’t have nearly the same leverage to block trades that Peavy basically has.
I doubt Kazmir gets traded
After years of negotiation, Kazmir finally signed a below-market deal a few months ago. If the Rays trade him away now, then nobody else is ever going to sign a below-market deal with the Rays as an issue of trust.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
+1
Moreover, the Rays should be looking to add a frontline starter like Peavy in addition to Kazmir after they came so close to winning it all. I realize that a fair number of people on this board believe the playoffs are a crapshoot, but after coming so close, I believe the Rays need to seize their window of opportunity and go for it. They don’t really need that much of what’s on their farm, and they could use those chips to put them over the top for a 3 year stretch that could bring alot of glory to Tampa.
They are adding a front line starter...
His name is David Price. It will be very interesting to see what the Rays do this offseason. They definitely have the talent in the minors to make a deal for a big time player. If they were to add Peavy(obviously not going to happen because they are an American League team), then who is left out of the rotation come playoff time…
Peavy
Kazmir
Price
Shields
Garza
Oh my…
I think that would be one of the best rotations of all time
I mean, maybe Atlanta’s Big 3 could beat it, but… damn.
Even without Peavy… damn.

Best of All Time?
This is just for kicks, and without too much thought being put into it, but in no particular order:
60’s Dodgers
70’s Orioles
90’s Braves
70’s A’s
2000’s A’s
10’s Giants
50’s Indians
20’s Yankees (how good were they?)
80’s Mets
Honestly
Kazmir would probably be my #5 in that rotation. Wow.
Hell
Even deal Kazmir for prospects to replace what it costs to get Peavy and add E-Jax into the rotation, and it’s still incredible.

ok
I love Price and all, but EXPECTING him to be a front line starter his rookie year is just setting him up for failure. I think he’ll be damn good, but it might not be until year #3. Ya know?
That is a hell of a rotation though. Bajeezuz.

this could come close 1-5, but hard to find a 1-5 comparable…

In the AL East
Playing for a three year window when youre a small market team could be a death sentence. If you slip up youre going to end up in the cellar for another decade.
You have to horde your young cheap assets and make smart trades for younger cheaper guys if you want to compete with the Sox and Yanks… and Jays and O’s for that matter.
This is not really true
Players sign pre-FA deals for financial security and a guaranteed payday, not to stay with one team. They don’t have any control over whether they stay with a given team anyway.

I’m looking for a Big bat in RF or DH (Can’t remember who they play there)

this is true
but there’s no way in hell i’d trade kazmir to get one. that needs to be done via free agency.
one can’t have enough pitching.
I heard Tim Lincecum will win 1 Cy Young & 11 Tim Lincecums. Question is, how many Cole Hamels will he win?
