can i have your opinion on these players?

again, i'm in a 12-team fantasy league that emphasizes minors. finding a decent minors guy in my league is a real chore (but that's what makes it fun). in looking at baseball america's recent '08 draft report cards i've come up with a decent list of players who could have an impact fantasy-wise. my question to you is this: are of the guys listed here must-signs? obviously, i can wait on those players who are far away. but if there is a player listed here who has to be signed ASAP, please let me know.

here goes:

Burgess, Jarrett (Mariners' OF)
Carter, Dexter (White Sox SP)
Castillo, Richard (Cardinals' SP -- body might not be conducive to starting?)
Chatwood, Tyler (Angels' SP)
Correa, Manuarys (Angels' SP)
De La Rosa, Wilkins (Yankees' SP)
Giavotella, Johnny (Royals' 2B)
Gutierrez, Daniel (Royals' SP)
Hayenga, Keaton (Royals' SP)
Hoes, L.J. (Orioles' 2B)
Holguin, Christopher (Blue Jays' SP)
Hudson, Dan (White Sox SP)
Jacobo, Gabe (Angels' 1B)
Jacobson, Brett (Tigers' SP)
Joseph, Corban (Yankees' 2B)
Marshall, Brett (Yankees' SP)
Moncrief, Carlos (Indians' SP)
Murphy, Tim (Rangers' SP)
Rodriguez, Rafael (Giants' SP)
Rodriguez, Yorman (OF, Cincy)
Romine, Austin (Yanks)
Satterwhite, Cody (Tigers' SP)

Wieland, Joe (Rangers' SP)
Sulbaran, Juan Carlos (Reds' SP)
Suttle, Brad (Yanks)
Wieland, Joe (Rangers' SP)

none of them are must signs, I don't think

But I’d sign Gutierrez and Romine if you have room.

Romine

I’ve heard some good things about him.

Giavotella

From what I’ve heard through the Royals is that he should move quickly and be an offensive minded second baseman.

yes

He’s going to fly through the system since he’s so polished, but I don’t him as a strong fantasy option. He’s frequently compared to Pedroia (sp?) because he’s a short, white, contact hitting 2B, but he’s probably not going to reach that status. If your short on middle infielders, might be a nice pickup, don’t see an urge though to pick him up though.

agree

with RoyalsFan and Doublestix, the kid should move quick, a Pedroia-type would be a best case scenario.

My favorites from this list...

…in no particular order are Chatwood, Hoes, Gutierrez, and Wieland. Gutierrez is the only one of the bunch that pitched as high as A-ball and did pretty well. As for the others, I like them for different reasons, but they’re all rookie-league level, and it’s hard to say what’s in store for them. Hoes looks interesting because of his good speed, plate discipline, and defensive versatility (2B/OF). Since it sounds like you’re in no rush to claim the rookie-level guys, I think Gutierrez could be a breakout candidate next year.

Also

I forgot to mention Dexter Carter. While he was old for rookie league, his frame and pedigree make him a good prospect, assuming he doesn’t muff any punt returns.

Tim Murphy may move fast for Texas, but won't be a heavy fantasy guy. More likely a LOOGY if he gets there fast.

in deep long term leagues look at taking Weiland, who most of the Rangers talking heads being the best SP they got in this year with major projectabilty on his pitches and velocity.

Depending on how your league is set up, you might look at Vallejo in AA Frisco as a SS. Has the athleticism to play SS, had to play 2B because of Andrus. Has been playing SS exclusively in Instructs and looking amazing. More of a value pick to get another high end SS prospect before he gets back into the SS position.

+1

Wieland has good upside. Gutierrez put up good numbers but did so as a 21 year old in the pitcher friendly midwest league. Satterwhite could be decent value from that group as a quick moving reliever. Kinda lilke demon below me, I’ve heard good things on Castillo can’t remember what I heard though.

Cody Satterwhite

Now raise your goblet of rock. It's a toast to those who rock!

I’ve heard good things about him… can’t remember them right this moment… I promise I’ll post something in a few minutes.

Rigtho

He’s a righty reliever in the Tigers system. Was our second round pick… hard throwing kid. He’s got control problems, but he also gets a lot of strikeouts. He’s going to land up in the bullpen if he makes the big leagues, but with some polish he’s got serious potential as a late inning guy.

De La Rosa

He had a really impressive first season as a pitcher. He’s going to have to be added to the 40 man roster (because he can be a free agent) so he might have a chance somewhat soon. Maybe not ‘09 but early ’10 is very possible if things go right, but ’09 is possible as well. He’ll probably start in Tampa (High-A) but with the chance to move quickly.

BTW, I’d take Romine. He’s gonna make the Yankees’ decision to move Montero’s position for them.

When it's all said and done..

I would rather have Romine over Montero as my future catcher. Romine supplies great defense and offense. Montero has ridiculous offense and poor defense.

Though yes, Romine will dethrone Posada, and Montero will take Matsui’s place?

Well...

Matsui, Nady, and Damon are all free agents after 2009, but I don’t see him being ready by then. Maybe he can make an appearance by mid-2010 at earliest. Of course, if he makes a case for it, he could be up earlier.

Also, don’t count out Cervelli if he can hit enough.

Rafeal Rodriguez is a 16 year old Giants signee out of the Caribbean. He is compared to Vlad Gurerro, but that is just speculaton and it is much too early too tell. He recieved a bonus larger then Angel Villalona.

I see the future, and it is Pablo

Oh

he plays outfield instead of SP

It helps if...

you don’t post on sites where your league-mates read, with a screen name we know. :) At least now I know who you’re looking at…I had Satterwhite for a while and dropped him. Romine isn’t half bad either but none really are must signs. Now I’ll look up the rest and snake them all from you in the supplemental draft…hahahahaha (that was a joke).

Manuarys Correa

He mad the HM section of my top 50 pitching prospects.

He played all year in the AZL at 19 yrs old and being 6’3", 170 lbs he’s still projectable. His arsenal includes a low 90’s 4 seam fastball, a 2 seamer with good cutting action, a plus slider and an improving changeup. In addition, he has exhibited exceptional command in walking only 10 batters in 58 innings of work against 67 strikeouts.

I heard Tim Lincecum will win 1 Cy Young & 11 Tim Lincecums. Question is, how many Cole Hamels will he win?

If you're looking for a deep sleeper

I’ll throw out the name Albert Suarez. Was only in rookie ball this year, but throws 95 and didn’t walk many.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

Interesting names...

I dont know alot about most of them..but there was comments about Keaton Hayenga in Johns Royals top 20. I have Hayenga and Richard Castillo in a DMB league..and other then the stats and such on Castillo..I have found little. anyone have any info? I see he is a little small for a RHP…but anyone with good info such as where and if he ranks in the Cards org?

by NYSOX on Oct 28, 2008 9:48 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Castillo

Jeff Luhnow has said that Castillo is 88-90 mph with his fastball and he is excelling because he’s an extremely polished pitcher for an 18 year old.
