Rank my prospects
In a fantasy baseball league, I have the following prospects:
Pitching prospect - Adam Miller
Hitting Prospects - Fernando Martinez, Cameron Maybin, Andrew McCutchen, Colby Rasmus, Justin Smoak, Brandon Wood
I had the prospects ranked as follows:
1. Cameron Maybin
2. Colby Rasmus
3. Andrew McCutchen
4. Adam Miller
5. Justin Smoak
6. Brandon Wood
7. Fernando Martinez
Curious to know other opinions on my ranking since I know this community has mixed opinions on Maybin, Wood and Martinez.

+1 Wood
I am a big fan of Brandon Wood and hope to see the Angels give him playing time at SS over Aybar in 2009.
In the games I’ve seen and scouting reports I’ve read, his strike zone recognition is vastly improved (even though the numbers are not reflective in his MLB #’s) in the latter half of 2008in AAA.
I expect big thing from him in his career and believe he has the range to stay at SS for his career.

Some of your prospects should be swapped
1. Justin Smoak, best power bat and highest offensive ceiling of the group.
2/3/4. Andrew McCutcheon, Cameron Maybin, Colby Rasmus, similar players with similar skill sets. None had outstanding years in 2008, but all were well-regarded prior to the season. Given that Rasmus and Maybin had better success in 2007, they’re probably a step ahead, then again, given they didn’t really impress in 2008, maybe not.
5. All of the rest, Wood is going to hit for power, if and when he hits, but there’s plenty of other guys in the minors with more value at this point. Miller is destined for the bullpen, and there aren’t many fantasy teams that have the depth to be targeting bullpen prospects. And F-Mart is like so many other hyped teens, too far out and a crapshoot at best. Better to roll different dice, I say.

Maybe
True. Adam Miller is destined to the bullpen in 2009, but not because he’s a two pitch pitcher. Miller is a top-of-the-rotation starter that has been limited due to injuries. Remember, Cole Hamels battled an injury bug that put a dark cloud on his prospect status as well.
Agree with F-Mart comment. Definitely not a true CF and may not be 40+ HR player but still an elite bat with excellent pitch recognition. A high risk, high reward player like many of the prospect I covet.

Rasmus first, Miller last
That’s all I can say with confidence. Miller is too injury prone to rank as high as the others.

1. Colby Rasmus
2. Cameron Maybin
3. Andrew McCutchen
4. Brandon Wood
5. Justin Smoak
6. Fernando Martinez
7. Adam Miller
I put Rasmus, Maybin and McCutch at the top. They’re clearly the cream of the toolsy CF crop. I love Brandon Wood and pray that he’ll be playing SS somewhere sometime soon. Smoak is an excellent bat, Martinez has a high ceiling, but hasn’t reached it yet and Miller is inconsistent at best.

McCutchen...
woul be first in Fantasy. He steals more bases than anyone on there, and still has a decent avg and power. In real baseball though, I would go
1. Colby Rasmus
2. Cameron Maybin
3. Andrew McCutchen
4. Justin Smoak
5. Fernando Martinez
6. Brandon Wood
7. Adam Miller

My take
Top rated:
1 – Rasmus. Ceiling is as high as anyone’s, but his risk is lower due to plate discipline, so he gets the nod over Wood and Maybin..
2 – Wood. Ceiling is tremendous, but has whiff problems that may never us see it. That ceiling as SS is too much to drop lower, though.
3. Maybin. Again, high ceiling and with K problems. Doesn’t have the power of Wood, and CF loses out to SS.
Next tier:
4. McCutchen. Low risk, just doesn’t have the ceiling of the top 3.
5. Smoak. Great upside bat, but he has to hit to prove his worth at that position. Still relatvely untested.
6. Fernando Martinez. I still want to see actual stats, not just ARL. Gets docked for sliding down the defensive spectrum.
7. Adam Miller. Just too high risk…not just that it keeps him off the field, but also that a cumulative effect will start to affect his stuff.
I could go back and forth on 5,6, 7 though.

My preference
1. Colby Rasmus
2. Cameron Maybin
3. Andrew McCutchen
4. Brandon Wood (Positonal scarcity… could he be a SS? Tons of power and is now underrated)
5. Justin Smoak (Only a 1B and far off)
6. Fernando Martinez (Extremely overrated IMHO. Has never really done anything impressive as a professional, outside of ARL performance… which only gets you so far in my book. Ceiling nearly as high as the others, but Im not a fan…).
7. Adam Miller (Hurt all the time… I think he’s a bullpen guy, ultimately.)

As far as the Smaok far off comment...
Smoak stands an excellent chance of if not starting the yer in AA, then getting a 10-20 game tester in High A before moving up. If you are basing his ranking on time frame, several of the Ranger prospect gurus see him making it to the majors in a year and a half or so….
