Bigger Stronger Faster*
Let me preface this by saying, I'm sorry if this comes off as spam or an unrelated plug of a film, but let me assure you this is very prevelant to baseball.
Bigger Stronger Faster* is a film in a kind of Morgan Spurlock style, without the bias of course. It is about steroids, it's impact on America, and what is being done about it. Ultimately it tackles sports from baseball, to wrestling, to weight lifting, etc. It interviews athletes, congressmen, doctors, and is basically one of the only, if not the only publication that gives a truely unbiased, clairvoyant view on the steroid issue.
The reason why I take ten minutes out of my life to type this is because I think it's important that us here have a bit of perspective when it comes to this steroid issue (especially given some comments I've seen in the Jordan Shafer reaction thread).
John I also suggest this one to you, I think you'll like it.
I've attached a bunch of reviews at the bottom of the page also. It is considered a top 5 movie for 2008 by Rotten Tomatoes.
I've attached a link at the bottom of this page because I'm sure most of you will probably not go out of your way to purchase this DVD.
The movie is only about an hour and a half, so that shouldn't be too long for you guys.
(to play the movie, click the play button in the middle of the screen once, it should then turn green after a few seconds. while it's green, hit the play button in the middle of the screen again, and it should start then. If this doesn't work leave a comment, and I'll help)
Thank you.
David

I heard Tim Lincecum will win 1 Cy Young & 11 Tim Lincecums. Question is, how many Cole Hamels will he win?

spurlock
is a tool, and this film delivers his typically slanted version of life, but he does the research for his side of the argument well….it’s just a shame that he never researches the opposite end of things with an unbiased eye…..it really discredits his films….
also, spurlock reversing one of the nation’s top high school workout programs in the naming already has him in extremely hot water….and i hope greg shepherd roasts him in it….

Morgan Spurlock has absolutely nothing to do with this movie.

misread
the OP’s comments….i read it as it being a morgan spurlock movie, which suddenly made the whole thing make a ton of sense…..i was not impressed with the movie, and it was done with a lot of the careless research that characterizes a spurlock flick, so when that name was brought out, it made perfect sense….my apologies for associating that waste of film with this flick….
however, opinion of spurlock and this flick seperately remain as previously stated….

Excellent documentary
I watched this a month or two ago after downloading it, and I would highly recommend it to any sports fan. I thought it was going to be a “blah blah blah, steroids are bad, blah blah blah, they give you cancer” type of thing and it was the opposite. If anything, I feel more lenient about the use of steroids after watching it.

hbo
did a “real sports” quip and then an entire special on steriods from both sides….from the incredible miseducation the American public (and especially most talking puppets with Congressional seats – attention Mr. McCain!) believed about steroids to the difference between a true steroid and modern performance enhancers….discussed both angles of benefits, especially in our elderly, and drawbacks….also did some very intriguing research into just what would set off different sports’ tests….basically in baseball and IOC, using nasonex every morning would inject enough steroid into your body for a positive test, while in the NFL, it’d raise a red flag that would require a re-test….
maybe it’s because i saw that one and how well researched it was that i disliked this movie, or maybe because just from my own research that i was yelling back at the movie how they were wrong, but i finished this and was upset….

Thanks...
I have always stayed pretty ignorant of steroids and the intricacies of them on purpose. They have never directly affected me since I try to keep sports in it’s proper place. So Bigger, Stronger, Faster was my first in depth “research” (if you call just watching it research) into the topic. I am going to have to look for the HBO special you mentioned though because the who thing is interesting. Also trying to get real information on just how harmful they are interests me. I was born in 1976 so I grew up in the 80s when all the “steroids will kill you!!!” propaganda was going on. It’s enlightening to see just how much we have been lied to over the years.

think alcohol
basically, we’re finding out more and more every day that alcohol has great benefits in moderation….it’s in excess that alcohol kills metabolism and brain cells and internal organs….
steroids are the same thing….but all we’ve heard in this country is the effects of the most incredible abuse….all those pictures trying to compare bonds’ jawline from one era to another are a great example….an EXTREME side effect of DRASTIC overuse of HGH is some minor squaring of the jaw….instead, we’re led to believe that hgh use at any level will drastically alter the shape of someone’s jaw….and nevermind that media has never ever figured out the difference between a steroid and a performance enhancer….mickey mantle took a ton of performance enhancers….joe dimaggio did as well….we don’t know outside of bouton’s book and some admissions all those who popped “greenies” and abused emphatamines before they became something tested for….

It might be a film about steroids on the surface, ....
but it’s more of a critique of society and its values. Introspection is always good.

Farnsworth: Start the ship, Leela. Let's just steal the damn radar dish and get back to our own time.
Fry: But- But won't that change history?
Farnsworth: Oh, a lesson in not changing history from Mr. I'm-My-Own-Grandpa! Let's get the hell out of here already! Screw history!
Farnsworth: You mustn't interfere with the past! Don't do anything that affects anything. Unless it turns out you were supposed to do it. In which case, for the love of God don't not do it!
Fry: Got it.
Farnsworth: If for example you were to kill your grandfather, you'd cease to exist.
Fry: (gasps) But existing is basically all I do.
