Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

ARI LHP Daniel Schlereth

Just wondering if anyone has any scouting reports on him.  He's the son of ESPN's Mark Schlereth, who happened to mention (on Mike & Mike this morning in a conversation about the way effort impacts success in football v. baseball) that Daniel sits at 94-98, and occasionally touches 100-102.  Is that at all accurate?  Anyone know if he has any secondary pitches?  He's a 6-10 lefty, too.

He's not exactly young relative to league (22 in A ball) and not exactly playing against top competition, but for what its worth his combined stat line in the southern and  midwest leagues is 10G, 12IP, 2ER, 6H, 6BB, 14K.

102?

My mom said I was the most handsome boy in the world, but I’m sure her friends and the writers of New York Jewish Kids Monthly scouting reports didn’t believe her when she said it.
Chalk 100-102 up to parental enthusiasm.
Apparently he has a good change and curve to go along with a fastball that sits in the low-mid 90s.

Let's be fair

If your mom was Mark Schlereth’s size, I’d smile and agree with anything she said.

Then again

"Pro scouts definitely see the potential in the 6-foot-1, 210-pound left-hander who once struck out 19 batters in a high school game.

They see an intense middle reliever who can throw a 97 mph fastball and mix in a curveball and changeup."

(note that he’s 6’1, not 6’10, as MiLB had him listed)

I don't really think the

age-to-level is a factor when you’re talking about a first-round college guy just making his pro debut

Good Prospect

He sits mid 90’s and can touch the high 90’s. He does not throw 100-102 mph. Very good slider as well.

I would expect him to move quickly especially because the Diamondbacks need relief help. He was part of a powerhouse Arizona bullpen that also featured Tigers first rounder Ryan Perry and projected 2009 first rounder Jason Stoffel who was the closer. Could end up getting the call late next year and end up being the Diamondbacks closer in 2010.

I completed a scouting report on him a while back:

He should move quickly as Kazmir mentioned above. I normally don’t like relievers as high round choices, but felt with Arizona on the verge of contending, the choice was solid.

But thinking about how much their system has thinned out, they probably could of gotten more value out of the pick even though I do think he’ll be a very good reliever for them in the long term.

Baby Stink

should rise extremely quickly due to the accelerated development of his secondary pitches. He definiteyl has the stuff and supposed makeup (son of a Super Bowl winning o-lineman) to excel at the big league level and potentially as a closer down the road.
