where to find quality starts stat?
I saw recently that tampa bay devil rays (always devil rays to me) pitcher james shields ranked fourth in the major leagues in quality starts this year. that got me to thinking........how do the rest of the pitchers in the majors rank in terms of quality starts? i did a few google searches but wasn't able to find the stat anywhere., which seemed a bit odd to me. any help that you can provide would be much appreciated.
go rays!

4.50 and 198
ERA and IP (based on typical 33 start schedule of today’s starters) of a guy who would have a quality start every time out there….he’d lead the league with his 33 quality starts, but he’d have an ERA that would have most thinking #4 starter….
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
But that guy would also become pretty rich
by throwing 198 innings of 4.50 ERA ball
With good reason
If he was a lock to do that year in, year out.
Is a "Quality Start" truly quality?
Saying that a pitcher could have 33 quality starts if he had a 4.50 ERA and pitched 198 innings is technically correct — but could be misleading.
Since all performance is subject to variations, such a thing wouldn’t be likely to happen once in a millenium. The so-called “quality start” is merely a minimum qualification for a game that is basically designed to keep your team within striking distance for six innings or longer. If nothing else, it is a simple basis to see how consistently decent a starting pitcher pitched.
Clearly it favors consistent pitchers over more spectacular but volatile pitchers — which probably is a good thing.
I realize the “quality start” thing looks to be bogus, but it is surprising how the best pitchers usually fare best in percentage of “quality starts.”
point taken
i just remember hearing bert blyleven say that if you would have told bob gibson that he led the league in quality starts, he would have been offended if he knew the requirements for the statistic….
it’s honestly one that fans definitely care A LOT more about than pitchers….as one friend said, "if i went to my owner with quality starts when negotiating, i’d have it thrown right back as subpar pitching for my ability, so i just don’t even pay attention to how many i have….
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

but isn’t there a Bill James stat for pitchers called Game score? Or something like that. I if remember right it might be cool to see which pitcher had the highest total game score for the season.
