Well...
The article on BA is the first of a 6-part series – this one dealt with the NL East. They list the players each teamed signed to bonuses of at least 6 figures, on the assumption that those guys are the key prospects (at least for now). According to their list, the Braves signed 9 such players (not counting Christian Betancourt), the Marlins 0, the Mets 1, the Phillies 2 and the Nationals 0. There are some really nice scouting reports on most of the guys (some are only a sentence long, but they do give you a bit of an idea of what type of player it is) and I think it’s a really good read (especially for fans of the Braves, since the majority of the players profiled signed with them). Further divisions to come…

Like it matters
3 years from now we’re going to find out that Omar plucked 2 or 3 great people underneath the radar. It’s who he is, it’s what he does.

Unfortunately I am having trouble finding the signing bonus numbers
But names like Mejia, Marte, and Flores come to mind.

Also, he wasn't GM, but
I believe he was their International Scouting guy when they signed Jose Reyes, who also wasn’t a high profile big bonus guy . Amongst their more recent signings, Ruben Tejada is another who might turn out to be interesting. And Maikel Cleto is a good raw power arm (but needs a lot of refinement).

I am also hearing a lot of buzz about Puello...
But a lot of these guys won’t be known to the general minor league community for another year or two due to the fact that most of them were signed at 16.

not under the radar ^^
Maybe the Mejia guy, but I’ve never heard of him until now so I don’t know. Marte and Flores both got 500k+ bonuses.

Marte
is now big, but at the time he was signed he was considered the 9th best position prospect out there. Additionally, at that time, I was unable to find a single scouting report on him. So yeah, he wasn’t given a sack of quarters, but he is outperforming the expectations of pretty much everyone else but the Mets’ scouts.

Just thought I'd add this
Link from baseball america
Opens in new window
It’s from a week before the 2007 signing period (when Marte was signed). He isn’t even listed as a potential prospect. And Flores is described as follows:
A lot of clubs weren’t on Flores, a 16-year-old from Barquisimeto, but his stock rose significantly over the last two weeks after several workouts with representatives from the Mariners, Cubs, Astros, Red Sox and Twins all present.
Flores remains an enigma, however, with sources now saying that he’s at least 19 or 20 years old, and more than 10 clubs voicing complaints of not being able to see the lefthander this spring. One source claimed Flores was actually in the States now, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Flores got the 9th highest bonus during that signing period, so clearly Omar had a different view of his value than others. That’s really the thing about signing bonuses. A team is going to pay what it takes to get a guy, which means that had the Mets not signed him it is probable that Flores, Marte, and Puello all drop at least tens of thousands of dollars (and in the case of Puello, off of the list).

thats the wrong Flores… the Flores you put the scouting report for is a pitcher, I believe his first name is Carlos. The Mets have Wilmer Flores.
by Peter North on Oct 13, 2008 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You're right
I reread, and Wilmer Flores is listed as “Wilber Flores” and mentioned only in name as one of a few dozen potential signees. So there ya go.

Mejia
Just some Mejia information for you. he’s 17, played in the NYP league (Short Season A ball), and I am not even sure whether he was signed in ’07 or ’06 at the moment. He was ranked as the 9th best prospect by Baseball America in what ended up being a stacked league. This is what they had to say about him:
Prospects like Mejia don’t come along very often. He’s listed at 6 feet and 162 pounds, but one scout said he looks closer to 190. Regardless, he throws much harder than most 6-footers, running his fastball up to 97-98 mph and sitting at 95-96 even when throwing out of the stretch in the middle innings.
“He’s a power-armed guy. He’s a freak,” a National League scout said. “I’m not even saying he’s any good right now, I’m just saying he’s a freak. He could probably throw 100 mph. His delivery’s fair, but it’s hard to repeat. I see a hell of a lot of effort with Mejia. He’s like the kid at the carnival trying to win the thing, just letting it all go. He’s got no rhythm. He’s trying to be more fluid, but it’s not happening.”
Mejia works around the plate but doesn’t have a lot of command in the strike zone or feel for pitching. He does have a chance for three legitimate above-average pitches, however. He has good feel for his plus 88-90 mph changeup, which he uses like a two-seam fastball. His low-80s power curveball is inconsistent, ranging from a plus pitch to well below average. If Mejia can harness his stuff, his ceiling is high, but long-term durability is a major concern with his small physique and max-effort delivery.

thanks
seems like an interesting prospect to say the least. the next Burgos? hopefully without all the stupidity…jeez.
Anyways, I think we just differed the meaning of “under the radar.” I’d consider anyone who got a fair amount a money to not be…while I consider “under the radar” a guy who you really hear nothing about or is signed for next to nothing (in baseball terms). For example of someone i’d consider under the radar, using someone I’m familiar with, this guy. He signed for I think $70k and I never really heard about him until a year after he was signed.

I hear that
Burgos is just dying to look like a big mistake in that trade. First he gets injured, then Bannister starts sucking and Burgos decides to out-do himself by beating one woman and running over another…..all while wearing a White Sox hat. It’s one thing to hurt another human being, but it’s quite another to have no team loyalty.
by JayWise on Oct 13, 2008 2:03 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Huh?
I’m pretty sure the relevant thing is that he ran over and killed a woman because she wouldn’t go out with him, not that he was wearing a White Sox cap.

I don’t think John would appreciate you linking his site to this nonsense.

Actually...
that was my first impulse, too, but on the site it only posts the information about the 6+ figure signings. It would almost certainly constitute fair use, since he doesn’t reprint any of the analysis, and just culls the essential information from it.
Ben Badler’s analysis is proprietary. The bare-bones information is not. Newspapers quote bonus information for which the only source is BA subscription material all the time.
Now, combining the posting with this post over here proudly advertising “BA content for free!” would get this guy in trouble were he reaching a significant enough audience for someone to start paying attention. His blog post alone probably isn’t an infringement, though.
Still, sign posey should avoid being a douchebag and respect the significant resources BA puts into its investigative reporting. BA’s the standard bearer for the prospecting world, and all us prospect nerds have a vested interest in the site continuing to do well.

My statement?
Why should one pay for stories about baseball news? It won’t benefit anyone..I understand paying for something that would help(my example being economics).

Because by linking John to this, it could possibly get him in legal troubles.
Also, it will be benefit the people who WORK at Baseball America. By stealing content you leave them with less revenue which gets people LAID OFF.

If you want to take up an argument for the abolition of copyright,
perhaps you should agree to pay John’s legal fees when he gets sued by BA for stealing their material.

Sure, but we're stipulating that John figures he has nothing to lose (because schmoster is paying his legal bills) and ignores the letter

Over-reacting
nobody posted proprietary info on John’s site. It’s over the line to link people to “BA content for free,” but any response would be on the poster, not john.
And let’s face it: half the people on the internet who write about prospects get 99% of their information straight from BA anyways. It’s kind of amusing to see how many times their information is repackaged and billed as someone else’s output.

That is pure idiocy
only things with academic or political benefit are fair to charge for?
What kind of world do YOU live in?
Baseball stories are an entertainment product, since when can someone not charge for an entertainment product?

if you want to read it, pay for it….if it’s “crap” as you say, don’t spend your money on it, and don’t expect anyone else to spend their money on it for you either….

If BA, or anyone, couldn’t charge for their material, that material would cease to exist .. no matter how much you could try to pay for it .. and then we would all lose.

i am still floored by the level of ignorance and arrogance of that view.

Did that OF supposedly headed to the Giants sign?
All the buzz back in June was that Rafeal Rodriquez was going to sign with the Giants once he turned 16 in mid-July or something like that. I have not seen or heard anything since. Maybe I missed it but does anyone know what is going on with this kid?

I don't quite get it.
Why don’t the Mets invest more money in IFA? They should double what they’re spending because Omar Minaya spots latin talent with ease.
by schmosterballs92 on Oct 14, 2008 9:06 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Minaya
A lot of his best signings are low profile signings. The ones that don’t get six figure bonuses or articles in BA.
by supermets on Oct 14, 2008 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Definitely
If you look farther up in this thread, I was having that same discussion with others. Two of the best IFA’s from last year were signed by the Mets and paid the 9th and 11th highest bonuses. One of them wasn’t even mentioned by BA as a potential prospect, and the other was called Wilber Flores (and was thrown in with dozens of other prospects).
by JayWise on Oct 15, 2008 2:32 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Flores and Marte
Both those guys got over 500k. How do they fit the profile of guys “that don’t get six figure bonuses”?
by aCone419 on Oct 15, 2008 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
They fit the profile of guys who were vastly underrated by others
And I am pretty sure that’s all that counts.
by JayWise on Oct 15, 2008 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Vastly
You are grossly exaggerating what “under the radar” means. Flores got paid like an early 2nd round pick and Marte like a 3rd rounder. And they wouldn’t have gotten paid that if there wasn’t a market from other teams.
Your point is wrong.
by aCone419 on Oct 15, 2008 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Low profile
When I say his best signings were low-profile, I wasn’t talking about Flores and Marte. I was talking about guys like Maikel Cleto, Greg Veloz, Ruben Tejada, etc.
by supermets on Oct 15, 2008 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And I do like those guys a lot
But they all appear to be very raw.
by JayWise on Oct 15, 2008 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
When I talk about under the radar
I talk about guys that there is no generalized scouting report on. I talk about guys who, when your team signs them, you say “WTF was Omar thinking taking these guys?” The fact that they got paid that much doesn’t mean anything if it’s the completely wrong value for them.
by JayWise on Oct 15, 2008 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot
They’ve been among the leaders in international spending over the last several years. In previous years they’ve been criticized for not spending enough in the draft, despite the fact that they didn’t necessarily have high enough picks to justify the spending being asked of them. Now, this season they had the picks in the early rounds, spend on them, and they get criticized for not spending enough in the international market. I don’t see how they can win.
by Fanon on Oct 14, 2008 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Some people are always looking for a reason to complain
Omar knows what he’s doing on the international market. Marte, Puello, Fernando, Flores, etc.
