Community Prospect #57

bereft of his multi-accounted cheering squad, guerra immediately wins by one vote.  could do a runoff, but doesn't really seem worthwhile at this stage.

The biggest knock that I've seen against him has been his lack of athleticism, I think at the time of the 06 draft I read he could be the most nonathletic player taken in the first round . But how will this hamper him in any way, aside from maybe covering first base?

I think he should be on the list by now too, though I went with Rohrbough here.

GALLARDO HYPE
where has that wily mo gone?  the list is getting a little stale, and it could use some new blood, the next yovani.  let's start digging a little deeper into the prospect pool instead of falling back on draft hype that has already been hashed out.

i'm trying, but apparently liz is too old, cahill's too young, volstad's too ugly, and masterson's too fat.

ah man
i'm tired right now.  i can run the list or i can make perspicacious arguments in the comments, but apparently not both at the same time.

ahaha gallardo hype i can't believe anybody remembers that

by wily mo on Jan 9, 2008 6:29 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

there are only about 141 comments that
include the word yovani (make that 142). gallardo hype was about the 6th.  be proud of that, but don't rest on it.

seriously, though the discussion in the last few lists has lacked.  the liz, mcdonald, and masterson discussions have been good from my point of view, and i guess that the walker discussions were informative if you're into that, but there should be more than one or two or three threads of discussion in each posting.  i don't see a whole lot of people that are supporting their candidates with a detailed description of why, and i think that is the real value in this endeavor.  this list should be more than a consolidated ranking from people that frequent this site, it should also encourage discussions of players that have not yet come to our attention, and it should be full of name dropping.

Ian Stewart
Stewart was such an exciting hitter to see come up. He could easily be rivaling Garrett Atkins for his job. Stewart could be one of the key parts in creating a Colorado dynasty.

The guys numbers are un-freakin'-believable and he's turning 23.

they are?!? looks to me like his numbers are pretty okay. unless you mean the numbers he put up in asheville 3 years ago. those were some great numbers.

what a difference a month makes
from Dec. 12, 2007, Headley v. Stewart thread:

"Headley wins this by a landslide.  Until Stewart can show that he can hit on the road, I am not buying his hype."

now:

"he may be the most underrated guy on our community prospect list."

what happened in less than 30 days of baseball not being played where you're now the guy who's voted "other" to bring Stewart onto the list, and are calling him "the most underrated"?

by bleedjaxblue on Jan 9, 2008 10:07 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

slobbin' dave
just asking what changed your mind. that's all. the talk about him moving to second was well before December. just check the thread you were talking in.

also "over the years" isn't the same as 20-some days of the off-season.

anyway, i'm not sure that Coors Field makes a hitting prospect "better." in fact, i'm sure it doesn't. it makes his raw numbers look more impressive.

but, that is all. just wanted to know why your esteemed opinion had changed. it's so hard to keep track of, after all. lord knows that Ian Stewart can be a contentious subject, right?

gomez
Carlos Gomez isn't eligible, right? I would think he would have been listed by now. Gomez was on Sickels' list, but he's not even listed under "more candidates."

by metsfan on Jan 9, 2008 6:29 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

List
the community list has a set of agreed upon standards and Gomez isn't eligible under those.  Sickles puts whomever he wants in his book because, well, their his standards.

Eligibility
What are the rules for eligibility? Is there a post somewhere?

by metsfan on Jan 9, 2008 8:33 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

no
this all happened before i took over.  as far i know the rule we're using is the usual 130 AB / 50 IP rule except they threw out gomez on service time.  personally i think using service time is lame because it's so hard to look up, but by the time i got around to whining about it it was too late.

late night bonus
i guess it isn't that late.  instead of making a whole diary about it i'm going to throw out the latest version of the wily mo 2008 top 100, unredacted in public for the first time.  this is still a draft and i keep changing it all the time, especially the back 50.

at some point i want to do little writeups and justifications to make it actually interesting to read, but i haven't done that yet, sorry.

fairley
right now he's all scouting, basically.  one of those football-playing all-around athlete types out of high school.  but the reports i've seen actually sound sort of optimistic on his hitting, that he does have an aptitute for it and shouldn't be a golson.  then he's got the power, speed, and so on.   i've seen it said that he was a top-half-of-the-first-round type talent who dropped for a varitey of reasons, including makeup concerns that sound overrated to me (some kind of prank gone wrong, etc.) and the fact that he was hard to scout.

the exact shape of his talent is still unclear, but this is the kind of guy i like to mention towards the bottom of my lists.  point out the new big talents, even if we have little evidence of their skill level yet.  i think of him as being in a similar position to the one desmond jennings was in last year at this time.

i also love the giants' draft this year so much that some of the good feeling i get from their other picks (noonan and alderson, in particular, and lincecum last year) rubs off on fairley - "if the guys who picked them also picked him, well, it seems like they know what they're doing right now."  sort of like the logan white effect, only 500% less likely to piss off drB when i talk about it.

Brandon Jones?
I was surprised you don't think he rates a mention in the top 100. He'll be starting in the bigs next year (well, platooning, anyways), he's young, he's athletic, and every Braves list I've seen has him in their top 4, well ahead of guys like Teheran, Rohrbough, and Locke.

I'd have him up near Balentien who, despite playing in better hitting environments, hasn't really out-shown Jones numbers-wise and is at roughly the same spot developmentally.

Thanks for posting!

he was one of the last cuts.  i'm very lukewarm on him.  he's obviously going to be a major leaguer of some kind, but i don't feel like he's going to be a Guy, if you know what i mean.  i have him in the same group as those guys in the nineties - teagarden, lillibridge, etc. - in fact that's perfect: i consider him sort of the lillibridge of left fielders, except shortstop is a lot more important than left field.

balentien is a weird guy.  i don't love him either, and two years ago when i first read up on him i wrote him off immediately as a cerrano.  hats for bats.  but in the two years since he's actually show an ability to make progress and adjust his game, which has surprised and impressed me.  if he really has the ability to tweak himself, the raw talent becomes much more interesting.  he could still be nothing, but he has enough potential to keep me interested.  i know jones also has a lot of athletic ability, but i'm not getting the same vibe from him right now.  in fact jones has been almost the opposite of wlad: i liked him a lot when i first read up on prospects two years ago, and considered him a sleeper, got angry when someone else drafted him in the 19th round in my league.  but he hasn't done much for me since and i've lost faith.  i could still be wrong, of course.

Some agreements, some disagreements.
I AM BEING VAGUE

Gio Gonzalez is too low. He strikes me as anywhere between 40 and 70.

Ian Kennedy deserves to be between 30-50.

Kuroda and Fukudome don't count as prospects in my eyes.

Fernando Martinez and Austin Jackson may as well be switched - As with Wieters and Maybin.

Jed Lowrie is way too high. He should be around Chin-Lung.

Kevin Mulvey should be between 80 and 100. He is certainly better than TOwles, Kiker or Teheran.

Brett Anderson deserves more respect from people here!

Nelson
When I started thinking about my top 100, I didn't think I'd include him even though I am an unabashed fan and supporter. Now as I look at it, I think you've got him just about right at 75. His season just looks more and more impressive as I look back, and KG commented yesterday that his defense has really improved as well. Nice job.

Adam Jones
Great List Wily Mo.  Thanks for posting it.

Curious as to where you would slot Adam Jones (if he were eligible within your top 100) and why?

Keep the info coming and thanks for your hard work on the CP rankings.

hang on
my next step is to incorporate all of last year's prospects / all the non-established players and make a super-list.  i'll be posting that as a diary maybe sometime today (if i get to it).
