Community Prospect #57
bereft of his multi-accounted cheering squad, guerra immediately wins by one vote. could do a runoff, but doesn't really seem worthwhile at this stage.

GALLARDO HYPE
i'm trying, but apparently liz is too old, cahill's too young, volstad's too ugly, and masterson's too fat.

there are only about 141 comments that
seriously, though the discussion in the last few lists has lacked. the liz, mcdonald, and masterson discussions have been good from my point of view, and i guess that the walker discussions were informative if you're into that, but there should be more than one or two or three threads of discussion in each posting. i don't see a whole lot of people that are supporting their candidates with a detailed description of why, and i think that is the real value in this endeavor. this list should be more than a consolidated ranking from people that frequent this site, it should also encourage discussions of players that have not yet come to our attention, and it should be full of name dropping.

stew
they are?!? looks to me like his numbers are pretty okay. unless you mean the numbers he put up in asheville 3 years ago. those were some great numbers.

what a difference a month makes
"Headley wins this by a landslide. Until Stewart can show that he can hit on the road, I am not buying his hype."
now:
"he may be the most underrated guy on our community prospect list."
what happened in less than 30 days of baseball not being played where you're now the guy who's voted "other" to bring Stewart onto the list, and are calling him "the most underrated"?
by bleedjaxblue on Jan 9, 2008 10:07 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
slobbin' dave
also "over the years" isn't the same as 20-some days of the off-season.
anyway, i'm not sure that Coors Field makes a hitting prospect "better." in fact, i'm sure it doesn't. it makes his raw numbers look more impressive.
but, that is all. just wanted to know why your esteemed opinion had changed. it's so hard to keep track of, after all. lord knows that Ian Stewart can be a contentious subject, right?

fairley
the exact shape of his talent is still unclear, but this is the kind of guy i like to mention towards the bottom of my lists. point out the new big talents, even if we have little evidence of their skill level yet. i think of him as being in a similar position to the one desmond jennings was in last year at this time.
i also love the giants' draft this year so much that some of the good feeling i get from their other picks (noonan and alderson, in particular, and lincecum last year) rubs off on fairley - "if the guys who picked them also picked him, well, it seems like they know what they're doing right now." sort of like the logan white effect, only 500% less likely to piss off drB when i talk about it.

Brandon Jones?
I'd have him up near Balentien who, despite playing in better hitting environments, hasn't really out-shown Jones numbers-wise and is at roughly the same spot developmentally.
Thanks for posting!

bj
balentien is a weird guy. i don't love him either, and two years ago when i first read up on him i wrote him off immediately as a cerrano. hats for bats. but in the two years since he's actually show an ability to make progress and adjust his game, which has surprised and impressed me. if he really has the ability to tweak himself, the raw talent becomes much more interesting. he could still be nothing, but he has enough potential to keep me interested. i know jones also has a lot of athletic ability, but i'm not getting the same vibe from him right now. in fact jones has been almost the opposite of wlad: i liked him a lot when i first read up on prospects two years ago, and considered him a sleeper, got angry when someone else drafted him in the 19th round in my league. but he hasn't done much for me since and i've lost faith. i could still be wrong, of course.

Some agreements, some disagreements.
Gio Gonzalez is too low. He strikes me as anywhere between 40 and 70.
Ian Kennedy deserves to be between 30-50.
Kuroda and Fukudome don't count as prospects in my eyes.
Fernando Martinez and Austin Jackson may as well be switched - As with Wieters and Maybin.
Jed Lowrie is way too high. He should be around Chin-Lung.
Kevin Mulvey should be between 80 and 100. He is certainly better than TOwles, Kiker or Teheran.
Brett Anderson deserves more respect from people here!

Adam Jones
Curious as to where you would slot Adam Jones (if he were eligible within your top 100) and why?
Keep the info coming and thanks for your hard work on the CP rankings.
