Fantasy/sim dump thread, week of 1/6

Here's the inaugural edition of a weekly thread devoted to fantasy questions and manager wanted/league wanted ads for sim and fantasy leagues. Please post all such requests on this thread only.

It's hoped that this can become a clearinghouse for threads that would otherwise swamp the diaries. Those not interested in sim or fantasy, or questions about trades, roster moves and prospect comparisons need not visit.

Thanks for reading. I'll be happy to set this up weekly on Sundays if the idea takes off.

Not that I think this is a bad idea or anything
But this will be long buried by the end of the week.

Yeah, well
The 50th diary on the page is from last Tuesday, and it's a slow time of the year. It's going to get busier from here on out. Still, if people get used to the idea, it'll be helpful and won't clog up the diaries. There will always be people unaware of the fantasy thread, forgetful people and others who think the rules don't apply to them, but it's an experiment. We'll see how it works.

by Flynn Blake on Jan 7, 2008 2:47 AM EST up reply actions

The problem
is that probably 2/3 of the fantasy banter comes from lurkers or new people who sign up only to get an opinion on the fantasy value of someone.  Generally, those types would only have the diaries set to 10.  Hopefully this works well, but I can see where it might not.  Worth trying out though.  If even half of the fantasy talk can be moved into one thread, then it probably helps the navigibility here.

I don't have an issue with Fantasy Stuff
Like we don't have other redundant crap on here like:

Joba vs. Bucholz, oooooh!
Today I see the 40th Lincecum v. Cain thread.
When all is said and done about 95% of these threads are fantasy related when you get to the meat of it.

So why the push-back?

"Ninety percent I'll spend on good times, women and Irish Whiskey. The other ten percent I'll probably waste."

Reposted for your annoyance - Heil Flynn
All of this righteous indignation about fantasy is ridiculous. You are no more a fan or knowledgeable because you do no participate.  Like it or not a great deal of the people who come to this site or any prospect related site, come because they are involved in roto, fantasy or sim leagues. I have heard all the arguments about what a bastardization of thee grand ol' game fantasy is, so save them. The truth is that it involves people in the great game of baseball in a way that is relevant to them. It allows them to feel as though they are actually part of the game. Many of us grew up loving and playing baseball but it was not in everyone's future to play the game or to work in the industry. Some of us went into other fields but can still recall the feeling we got opening a pack of baseball cards, playing waffle ball in the yard pretending to be our favorite players, or dreaming about being on the field. Fantasy leagues allow people to stay connected to those feelings. It is not hurting baseball it is helping and I guarantee you anyone involved with the business of baseball will tell you the exact same thing. So save your "concentration camp" for something more meaningful like people who can't adapt.

re: fantasy diaries
There are limits to everything. We once had a guy a post a new diary about every round of his fantasy draft. It got to a point where 4 over the most recent 25 diaries were about his draft. He got railed against. In my opinion he deserved it. If you've got a diary about your fantasy team in the most recent 50 - continue using it rather than spamming everyone with more diaries.

by McLovin on Jan 7, 2008 11:07 AM EST up reply actions

I agree
however that has little to do with fantasy as a whole and more to do with that posters lack of common courtesy. If a player physically assaults his wife does that mean all players are physically abusive?

by Pitt craws on Jan 7, 2008 11:15 AM EST up reply actions

right on...
something like that deserves to be dealt with.  it's the responsibility of every poster here to be wise in how they post.  that's just plain stupid.  and of course, there's gonna be some heavier times of the year for fantasy posts...like the next two months.

you're dead on in what you say, though, and i should have included that sort of thought in my original post.  be smart, dammit.  this is not a fantasy site.  it's not a purist site.  it's a minor league site.  both groups of people (and there's probably more groups than just that) need to be respectful of everyone that comes here.  it's not out here just for one person/group.  john did not create it with one group of people in mind.  it's for everyone.  now we all need to treat it like that.

Um, I do play sim
So save your righteous indignation for someplace else. You don't know anything about me.

by Flynn Blake on Jan 7, 2008 11:15 AM EST up reply actions

In addition
Look at the two topics far below that have been posted on this thread already. I guarantee you there are people who might have been reluctant to post otherwise because they saw how others had been treated, or perhaps felt like it was not their place to do so, or they had a question but didn't feel it merited its own diary.

Most people engaged in fantasy/sim know that VIRTUALLY NO ONE ELSE ON EARTH gives a crap about their teams. Not their spouses (who are just being polite while you go on and on), not their friends who aren't involved in their league, not their relatives or co-workers. They're smart enough not to inflict that upon others WHO AREN'T INTERESTED. So why not give them a small corner of the site that is dedicated to them, where they can ask away without fear of flaming and will be comfortable doing so? This is the exact opposite of a concentration camp, and by the way you've bottomed out your argument by bringing up Hitler twice already.

This option can (and should, IMO) be viewed as a positive thing. It's not meant to be negative, but if it encourages people to post without inflicting it on people who don't care about it at all, then by all means, it's a good thing.

by Flynn Blake on Jan 7, 2008 11:27 AM EST up reply actions

For everyone
There are lots of post on this site that I am not particularly interested in. I have found a unique way to deal with it, I simply don't read them. I respect your attempt to do something positive. I just think it further perpetuates the idea that this site is only for one group of devotes.

by Pitt craws on Jan 7, 2008 11:39 AM EST up reply actions

Not Necessary
It is not necessary for me to "know" you in order to respond to your post. This is like saying you are not raciest because you have a black friend. And no I wasn't calling you a raciest. More just asking you to realize this is a public site made available by John. If John decides to institute rules and limitations then that is HIS purgative.

Spell check spell check
It ppears I need to spell check spell or just spell thing correctly in the first place. Time for a new laptop, I have a keyboard that misses letters all the timand then I run spell check to these types of results. You got the point though right

Yes
It does "ppear" that way. "Timand" for a new keyboard indeed.

spell check is not a substitute for literacy. purgative and raciest are indeed words, just not the words he wanted to use.

by jpahk on Jan 8, 2008 4:16 PM EST up reply actions

swamp???
i see people complain about fantasy/league questions...but the number of them vs. other diaries is hardly swamping this board.

3 consecutive posts about one trade is at least as likely, and there are lots of other sorts of diaries that don't strictly adhere to a minor league only strict interpretation of this site.

i really don't understand the desire to drive away any and all fantasy questioners from posting.  my guess is at least half the people that come here do so because they're interested in something going down in their fantasy/sim league.  but i don't think that means they are only looking for fantasy info here.  there's lots to learn about the real teams we all root for, how they're doing, or not doing.  if anything, i think the people that come initially to figure out a trade or scout a player end up greater fans of baseball and the incredible minor league system overall.

i've only been coming to this site for a couple of years or so...so maybe before that is was fantasy post after fantasy post.  but it's not bad now.  maybe that's because a lot of questions would be asked but those who'd pose them are terrified of the flaming they'll get if they do.  if that's the case, i think that's wrong.  they've got as much right to this site as any of you, except for john, obviously.  if he explicitly says "NO FANTASY POSTS"  then fine.  but then i think he risks losing readership here, and by default, then sales of his book.  and while this a great bit of fun for all of you out there...it is a business for him.

so...maybe lighten up on people that do want to know something different than you do...or maybe are just plain stupid compared to you all.  use it as an opportunity to show all of us how freaking brilliant you are.

by huckleberry on Jan 7, 2008 2:56 AM EST reply actions

I don't think
John cares about fantasy questions as long as they have some kind of discussion on players or prospects in the question. Fantasy questions aren't the same as fantasy recruiting, which doesn't really promote discussion or have much to do with the site. What he doesn't want is fantasy recruiting posts, and there have been a bunch lately starting to creep back in, even though he made a post specifically asking for fantasy recruiting threads to stop.

Again, I think there needs to be a forum rules type post at the top of the diaries that people should read and follow before posting; it would get rid of a lot of these "well I didn't see anything about it so I thought I could post those" recruiting diaries.

Minor League Draft
Minor League Draft for an AL Only Dynasty League coming up. 5X5 with OBP instead of AVG. Just looking for a little feedback. Dont worry about the guys not on the list, Im just curious how people feel about my rankings of people who are on this list. Some teams I havent really delved into enough... like the Jays. I still dont know what to make of their draft picks this year. 3B who doesnt impress me and a catcher with a bad back...? Yuck.  But again, Im only concerned with the guys on the list. These are the best available.

Im very risk averse typically so I was hoping someone would give me some feelers on this list. I should also mention Im Yankee averse with my fantasy teams, so Ive definitely dropped Horne and Jackson way below where they belong... just trying to be honest with myself about where I would draft guys and I cant see myself going higher on those two. They have to massively drop for me to take them. Laffey is high b/c he can be immediately helpful.

FYI, I have the 10th pick, 20, 30, 40, and also a pick that will fall between 11 and 14 that has yet to be determined. Ive put spaces after every tenth  guy for reading convenience:

David Price
Matt Wieters
Mike Moustakas
Desmond Jennings
Rick Porcello
Michael Main
Jordan Walden
Trevor Cahill
Beau Mills
Chris Davis

Jed Lowrie
James Simmons
Tyler Robertson
Dan Cortes
Nick Hagadone
Chorye Spoone
Taylor Teagarden
Wes Hodges
Ryan Kalish
Casey Crosby

Aaron Laffey
Alan Horne
Jake Arrieta
Danny Duffy
Jack Egbert
Sean O'Sullivan
Blake Beavan
Andrew Bailey
Aaron Poreda
Omar Poveda

Ben Revere
Juan Ramirez
Phillipe Aumont
Will Middlebrooks
Austin Jackson
Jesus Montero
Michael Saunders
Nick Weglarz
Brandon Hamilton
Charlie Furbush

David Bromberg
Duane Below
Sam Runion
Julio Pimental
Ryan Royster

If I could somehow end up with Main, Simmons and Crosby after the first two rounds I would be delighted. Its very difficult to get a read though, b/c this is a super intense league with a lot of money at stake.

Im... ahem... two time defending champion...

Please
be honest with me too, its a raw list and by no means a finished product. It will probably be tweaked by the next time I check this page. Im just looking for a little feedback. Been staring at this list for too long.

Thanks in advance,
Al

AL-only
Boost Weiters to #1 - Catching is very thin and he is likely going to make a contribution by 2009.

Lowrie should be higher.  He's ready to contribute.

Ryan Kalish is going to get a lot of hype this season so he could also be higher.

Michael Saunders has all types of fantasy desirable skills.  I'd have him a lot higher.

Finally Ben Revere looks good so far.  I'd take him ahead of some of the high school pitchers listed ahead of him.

by ephinz on Jan 7, 2008 9:27 AM EST up reply actions

I agree with most of that
And Ive been toying with exactly those guys. Except Lowrie. I started him at 7th and keep moving him down. While I think he'll be an excellent player in real life Im not convinced the fantasy value will follow. He doesnt hit HRs and he doesnt steal bases.  He doesnt have a place in the batting order anytime soon. He's a one category guy with great OBP(remember my league uses OBP instead of AVG). I can only drop him so far b/c middle infielders are always scarce but I wouldnt be thrilled to draft him...

Revere, btw, isnt a very patient hitter so far at all. So he's another guy Im looking at as a pretty sure bet but still only contributes one category(even if its plus plus).

As always, pitching prospects are extremely overvalued in a 10 team AL only. When I made my list I started thinking Id bump down all the high school arms but I kept coming back to them...

Thanks

by alskor on Jan 7, 2008 12:16 PM EST up reply actions

I like your list
A few comments, but don't take them as gospel.

I'd move Beau Mills down.  I'm in the minority here, but I don't like him much at all.  He has yet to prove himself against even mediocre competition, and his swing is a bit on the long end.  Also, I see his maximum upside (which he's a ways away from reaching) as a Tino Martinez type hitter rather than a masher.

I'd move Aumont (who has top-tier talent), A. Jackson (monster second half, 5 tools, could potentially play well in all 5 categories), Montero (I'm not generally a fan, but he did well as a 17 year old, and if he can stick at catcher, he could be quite valuable....part of the reason people are down on him is defense, and you don't need to worry about that in fantasy), Pimentel (another one with great tools who is really young) and Royster (absolutely monster season last year; if improvement was for real, could project as a top level power hitter, although his previous performance and K rate are question marks).  I'd put Jackson near the bottom of the first list, Aumont towards the bottom of the second, and the other three somewhere in the third. If you can only hold minor leaguers for a couple of years, then forget about Montero and Pimentel, as each is at least 3 years away from the bigs.  There's also a pretty good argument to move O'Sullivan up a bit.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

One more
I'd move Cahill way down.
Vogt early, Vogt often.

by Brickhaus on Jan 7, 2008 9:58 AM EST up reply actions

Why are you so down on Cahill?
Our of curiosity. He started very high on the list, moved down ten spots and eventually rode back up to where he is now. His inability to get lefties out scares me. I think he's similar to many of the guys just below him on my list, but he has the advantage of having taken a few more steps forward in the development process. That's what bumps him up. I do have concerns Im taking a mediocre pitcher over high end guys b/c he's closer to MLB...

Thanks again.

by alskor on Jan 7, 2008 12:34 PM EST up reply actions

You can hold them forever
essentially. Once their arb years hit you go year to year with them by their real life salary. Id post a more complete listing of the rules but I dont want to bore everyone.

Im not a big Jackson fan, and Im not a big fan of taking OFers. Also, the OBP issue worries me with Jackson. He's a guy I dont worry about placement that much though even though he deserves to be higher b/c Im certain he'll be off the board by my second pick. Same thing with the Porcello/Main/Walden group I have at 6-7-8. Its not like Im going to get to choose from all three of these at pick #10. I can be sure of that.

Man, I just dont know what to make of Aumont. SOoooo far away. I actually started by taking him off the draft board. But as I got down to Sam Runion and Duane Below type projects I thought to myself... I would HAVE to take Aumont by now. I just dont like high school pitchers in general and if I put the label "project" next to a guy I essentially want nothing to do with him unless he drops. Aumont is super high risk in both of these categories if you ask me. Then I add in the way the M's handle prospects and it gets dicey.

I do love Montero and Mills. If I put "plus plus power" next to a guy's name then Im ready to jump on them. Im ready to reach on Montero even though I admittedly try to stay away from Yankee prospects. I dont even care if he moves off catcher. I see Mills as having a very high floor, fantasy wise, and that's what Im liking there.

I have no idea what the deal with Pimental is. This seasons K rate plummet frightens me. I kind of think he's a reliever.

Im probably going to go back and look at Aumont and Jackson again though, based on your recommendation. I still think Jackson will be gone. Most of the people in my league are infatuated with tools and Jackson has loads of them. He's gotta move up though. Im sure one of the dimmer bulbs in our league will draft Aumont very high(above where you recommend) too, b/c he was drafted so early in the MLB draft.

I think Im too risk averse... I just really love sure things... feel like playing fantasy baseball is like being awash in a sea of uncertainty and you have to grap the solid things while you can. It does hurt my upside sometimes though.

Minor League System
I usually don't like when people brag about their minor league systems in their fantasy league because half of the time they seem inflated or they are playing with less knowledgeable people.  I am in a fairly competitive 30 team DMB league and I think I have put together a pretty good farm system over the past year.

If anyone is bored like I usually am and want to put together a list I would love the input.  I will list my farm system here, I would love to see how people would order them in a top 10 and if anyone is bored I would love to see an overall list 1 to 22.

Fantasy Baseball
If not for roto/sim leagues, this site wouldn't exist, and John would be doing something else for a living.

+1
Let's ease up on the site policing, fellas, and just talk baseball.

by Yakker on Jan 7, 2008 2:24 PM EST up reply actions

Couple things
  1. John doesn't seem to have a big problem with the fantasy posts, it's the recruiting posts that have been ridiculous. A weekly thread of those seems, to me, to be a very good compromise.
  2. Another plus to a thread like this is that it gives people a chance to ask questions that maybe they don't think deserves a whole diary thread of it's own. I've certainly had questions I've been tempted to ask opinions on but which I didn't think needed a diary all to themselves.
This is me being polite.

Thank you
thanks for starting the thread for this week.

by kienast on Jan 7, 2008 3:30 PM EST reply actions

Reason
This is the reason I come to the site.  I'm a fan and do not have the opportunity to see many if any of the players discussed(only get to a few MB Pelicans games) but I love to read the insight here and I use what I can from it for my fantasy/sim leagues.  If I wasn't involved in them, my interest in this site would be near 0 and I wouldn't be purchasing a book from John.

I think the idea of a thread for the week is great since we aren't allowed to post diaries of our own about it anymore.

by kienast on Jan 7, 2008 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

Not true
IIRC, John simply asked people to cool it with diaries asking for new owners for their leagues, not all fantasy-related questions/content.

can't really tell withouth knowing settings
Assumings it's a generic 5x5 league, I would take the Lincecum side. If steals/2B are a need, then I'd consider the other side, but it looks like you'd be taking on a couple of ugly salaries there, especially when you figure that Podsednik doesn't even have a team last I checked, and presumably there aren't a lot of openings for a player with his skills.

'Course, if this is some sort of sim league where you get mad points for defense, then Feliz doesn't like quite as much like a huge piece of deadweight.

where to go from here?
i'm in a 30 team DMB league, free agency has yet to start, but i've set up perfectly for it.  i've got 40 million to spend, few holes to fill, and the strengths of the free agent class play perfectly towards my needs.

lineup:
andre ethier, RF
casey kotchman, 1B
aaron hill, 2B
rocco baldelli, CF
jason botts, LF
pedro feliz, 3B
omar quintanilla, SS
greg zaun, C

rotation:
#1 schmidt
#2 mcgowan
#3 marcum
#4 wandy rodriguez
#5 john patterson

depth chart:
catcher (need backup and depth c):
zaun

1b:
kotchman
botts
eric duncan

2B:
hill
quintanilla
josh wilson
sean rodriguez

SS (need starting SS):
quintanilla
sean rodriguez
josh wilson
sergio santos

3B (need long term solution after feliz):
feliz
josh wilson

LF:
jason botts
michaels/nixon
gorneault
val majewski

CF:
baldelli
chris duffy

RF:
ethier
michaels/nixon
gorneault
val majewski

SP
#1 schmidt
#2 mcgowan
#3 marcum
#4 wandy rodriguez
#5 patterson
floyd
masterson
liz
van benschoten
scott elbert
ricky romero
edwin jackson
rob tejeda

RP (need all):
justin speier
yhency brazoban
craig hansen
eulogio de la cruz
masterson

so basically, i'm at a loss as to where to go before free agency starts.  my only pressing need is SS, and if i can't fill it in a trade, i'll go after jack wilson, tony pena, or john mcdonald when the bidding opens.  there aren't a whole lot of AAAA options at the position, so i'm in the process of sending out feelers for youngens that have yet to surface as major league caliber.  other than that, though, i feel as though the best thing i can do is sit on my hands until may, at which time i can decide what to do with rob tejeda, edwin jackson, yhency brazoban, ricky romero, scott elbert, eric duncan, and val majewski

few holes to fill?
Even in a 30 team league I'd call Botts, Baldelli, Felix, Quintanilla, and Zaun holes. I also wouldn't be thilled about Ethier being one of my 3 best hitters.

I'd prefer over 2/3 of the real-life MLB teams over this squad.

you're sleeping on botts, i love zaun,
i project a bounceback for baldelli, and feliz is a great defender.

quintanilla is just a place filler for the time being, though i do like that ZiPS has him as a VG defender at both 2B and SS.

plus,
my home park has a park factor 105, which really plays up my hitting.  it's my theory that by maximizing my defense and pitching, and letting the park guide my offense, i will get the best results.

Sorry dude
It can sometimes be hard to accurately analyze a roster you've put sweat equity in. But it's better to hear it from us than find out in July when your 10 games back. Your squad is mediocre at best, but I'd probably grade it out even much lower than that.

I agree
This looks like a bottom 10 team in a DMB situation.  Those guys may bounce back in real life but that won't help you next year because their projections will be real iffy.  This doesn't strike me as a competitive team, and those FA names don't excite me in any way.

Going for him
One of the things he does have going for his team is $46 mil to spend in FA.  W/ that he will be able to fill some of the holes he has.  If I recall, he has been running the team for just over a year and turned it around from a bottom feeder team.  If he uses his cash wisely in FA(guys other than he listed) I think he can compete for the WC.
