Mets trade for Pagan

I guess we'll call this news in a slow stretch for the Hot Stove League.

"The New York Mets acquired outfielder Angel Pagan on Saturday from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for a pair of minor leaguers.

Outfielder Corey Coles and righthanded pitcher Ryan Meyers were sent to the Cubs."

Coles looks definitely just like a warm body.  Meyers had some pretty nice stats in A ball but he's a little old for the league.  Any thoughts on these players?  Seems like it was a move just to make a move to me.  I'm not particularly exciting by a .255 career hitter with no OBP skills, a tiny bit of pop, and speed but with little idea how to use it.  Angel seems to me pretty much like a million other AAAA outfielders that could be a 4th or 5th outfielder on a lot of teams.

Recall Peter Gammons said in his Thursday chat at Boston.com that the Mets were still trying to build-up inventory for a Santana trade.  Pagan offers some additional protection for 2007 in the event of the expected Mosies Alou injuries.

Ryan Church, Endy Chavez, Angel Pagan and Damion Easley fill-out the OF behind Carlos Beltran and Moises.

Nevermind whether or not Gomez actually proves to be a better player than Pagan.

I don't think this affects Gomez
Pagan has no potential, he's 26. He cannot replace a top prospect. Gomez could still be traded, but he wouldn't be affected. I think it is more likely that Pagan will be in AAA so he can come up when Alou goes on the DL. That way, Gomez can raise his value in AAA for a year, assuming he's still a met.

Pagan
I think Pagan has some potential. He's athletic, his power's starting to come around and now he's hopefully going to be healthy. I wouldn't put money on him having a good major league career, but it wouldn't shock me.

Gomez gone for Blanton soon?
probably wont happen at least until the Santana drama is done

but lets do some pre trade analysis

the main guys might be Gomez/Mulvey

how many OF's do the A's need?
Buck/Denorfia/stuck with Kotsay

Sweeney/Gonzalez/Cunningham from trades, at least one will likely be up at the mlb level to start 08

then their OF busts up to this point Robnett/Putnam/Hererra

what Gomez does provide is a pure defensive CF, compared to the other guys

Mulvey will likely be up at the AAA level to start 08. he projects to be a #3/4 SP type. He would balance out the other trades because A's have targeted lefties.

maybe pre haren/swisher deals i could see a trade matching up up, but not as much. i'd prefer Dodgers with their depth of IF prospects, but less interest in blanton after signing kuroda

gomez
I know there have been rumors, but as a Met fan, I would hate to give up Mulvey and Gomez for Blanton. I would really be surprised if Gomez went in a deal for Blanton.

Probably not that complicated
The A's picked up Denorfia pretty much so they'd have three warm bodies in the outfield.  Not exactly the brightest time for Oakland... remember the Langerhans deal (Ben Buttreach didn't have enough seasoning)?  Then he hopped into the injured outfielder pig pile with TJ, so he'll probably be on the DL for a while.  I'm guessing he's out of options, too, so he probably won't be long for Oakland.  Still, they're not really hurting for outfielders now.

Deno
Don't underestimate Deno, or his role with the club. He can play center, and put up some excellent numbers at AAA. Also, the A's acquired him after the TJ surgery knowing he would not be available until the 08 season. By most accounts he'll be ready to go by opening day.

CD has an option left
although, ironically, the reason why is that he spent the entire year on the DL.

Still, he's clearly more advanced than any of the other outfield prospects, so it's hard to imagine him not opening the season with the big league club. Hopefully the rotting corpse of Kotsay won't obscure him for too long.

If he posts the numbers his projections say he will, he should easily win the starting CF job for 2009.

Hakuna Matata
The Cubs originally bought Pagan from the Mets in '06 for cash considerations so the circle of life is complete and he's back in the NY fold.  He can play anywhere in the OF and is probably a good fit for the #5 OF slot.

I like the deal on the Cubs' end too.  They turned a bit of dineros for a couple of warm bodies one of which could turn into Kevin Hart's little brother and help out the bullpen in a year or two.  He'll be 22 next year and that wouldn't be old for AA.  He could start at that level and we'll see what he really is.  But even if he goes to A+, he's not the IDEAL age, but neither is old for the league.  I have no idea what the scouting report is but on MiLB he's listed at 6'5" and 195.  So maybe he has some velocity and a nice downhill angle.  Maybe Metty knows something.  Mahalo

the reliever
I'd never heard of the reliever before this trade, but looking at his stats, he dominated low-A(age 21) this year, but was bad in high-A. Looks like he'll start at high-A at age 22, which is old, but plenty of relievers start late. He had very good K numbers too.

but it also
took him three years of pro ball to cough out a decent relief year in low A AND he was repeating the league.  He was poor in low A the year before and bounced around short season ball for a couple years before that.  21 year olds putting up solid numbers in relief in low A are a dime a million

Sam Fuld
I think this means that Sam Fuld gets a shot at the #4/#5 outfield spot and could get some playing time.
