Football Playoff Picks

As you may know the NFL Playoffs kick off today and I am intrigued by what some of your picks

Anyway here are mines for this round

Seattle beating the Skins: This one was tough but Seattle is at home and have the better QB and sooner or later that wave skins are riding on is gonna simmer down soon.

Steelers beating the Jags: People are somewaht making a big deal of how the Jags "out physical" the steelers that last time they face. It was a close game and the steelers could of won that game. Steelers are at home and it's hard for a team to beat another two times on the road.

Chargers beating the Titans: I don;t think this game is gonna be close. Titans are bang up and the Chargers are just a better football team period. The Key here is Philip Rivers though. (My sleeper to make the SB out of the AFC)

Giants beating the Bucs: Giants play better on the road and truly think that this is the year Eli plays well in a playoff game. The key here is the Giants running game and how the Giant secondary guard Joey Gollaway.

So here it is, My picks for the NFL playoffs.

My picks
Looks like Seatle will beat the Washington.

Jags over the Steelers.  With Parker healthy I might go with the Steelers, but without him thoer running game isn't as good as the Jags.

Chargers over Titans.  With a hurt Vince Young this is the easiest game to pick.

Tampa over NY.  It's amazing how good game can make people forget how terrible Eli Manning is.  He is the key to the game (and their playoff hopes).  If he does good they win, but I don't see him having two good weeks in a row.

Looks like
Washington mught pull it off.  Hopefully they can, great story.  I was picking them before the game, finally decided to show up in the second half.

Mine
I agree Seattle over Washington (kind of cheating since the game is at halftime.)

I think the JAX/PIT game will be the best of the first round. It seems like most people are writing PIT off because of the Parker/Smith injuries. JAX is such a tough, physical team too. I have a gut feeling PIT will prove everyone wrong at home, but I will still take JAX.

Does anyone honestly believe Vince Young will not play tomorrow? Not a great player statistically, but he's just a winner. That said, not even Norv Turner can screw it up tomorrow, LT is just too damn good. SD wins big.

I keep going back and forth on the NYG/TB game. Sure, TB looked awful those past few weeks, but even if they won those games they would be in the exact same position right now. Gruden and Co. have been preparing for the Giants for three weeks. They are more rested and more importantly they are not relying on Eli Manning to win a game for them on the road. Give me TB.

Next week-NE over JAX in a great physical game.
IND over SD, closer we think.
Green Bay over TB, also closer than most expect.
Dallas over Seattle big.

Conference Finals
IND over NE (don't really think this, but it's too easy to pick the undefeated team. I think NE would actually prefer this indoors as much as they like to throw. But Maroney made me a believer late in the year when they needed him.)

Dallas over Green Bay. I dislike Dallas, but I hate Green Bay. I don't think they are that good at all. They will be lucky to go .500 with a first place schedule next year. Their chances in Dallas are much better than they would be in a -12 degree game in Green Bay due to their offense (not a beleiver in Ryan Grant at all.)

Super Bowl
AFC over NFC-Not to start another big debate, but it's like the AL vs the NL, just a much stronger league right now.

Correction
If TB wins they are at Dallas next week and Seattle is at Green Bay. I would still take Green Bay (close) and Dallas (not close, but not huge, I'll say by 13.)

Indy
No chance Indy beats NE. They couldn't pull it off at home earlier in the season, they sure won't be able to do it in Foxboro. Even if maroney doesn't show up (which i believe he will) the Pats won their first SB without much in the way of a running game or a standout receiver, Brady flat out finds the open man.
19-0, Seau and Moss get rings, Brady gets his 4th, SB MVP to Moss (or Brady) and the 2007 Pats are crowned best of all time.
My money is on the Packers to make the SB, but like last year, the true championship game is the AFC Championship game.
This is me being polite.

Yeah...
I agree. There is nothing not to like about NE. It's more wishful thinking and not wanting to go with the obvious. When is it all said and done this New England team will go down as the greatest football team ever.

Tom Brady will have four rings, an MVP award, the single best season ever for a QB, a kid with a smoking hot woman and is dating one of the most well known supermodels on the planet. He's done alright for himself.

LETS GO JAGS
WHAT A WIN.. TIME TO END THE PERFECT SEASON

yawn
If 'Big Ben' can carve up the Jaguars like that, I can't wait to see what Brady does... Don't forget to keep some Kleenex handy Jags fans... you're gonna need it.
This is me being polite.

really?
i mean, i want the Pats to lose and all, but i doubt i'm going to masturbate on the spot to the sight of it.....

Gross
But funny...
Afraid that'll have to be a wet dream though Jax...
This is me being polite.

jax
shouldn't that be "bleedjaxteal" now?

anyway, i went 1.5/4 ATS on the weekend, but i did correctly predict the exact final score of the chargers-titans game. never done that before, and i probably never will again. (though it's a lot easier--still damn hard, but easier--when the game features two great defenses and mediocre-to-average offenses.)

by jpahk on Jan 7, 2008 11:43 PM EST up reply actions

haha
yeah -- didn't even think about the jax reference in my name. though, randomly, i have always loved the jags. i really might have to move to Florida -- and before i'm 70 and want to get my ass to Boca Raton, too.

predicting the final score = damn impressive regardless of the defenses, though. anyway, c'mon -- Vince Young just wins football games! it's a shame football games keep insisting that he score points to win them.

curious who you've got this next week. i'm much more puzzled for this round than i was the last.

Easy
Pats over Jags - Do I need to justify this?
Colts over SD - This is the one I'm least sure about. SD gave them a battle last time and Freeney is done for the year now (after being injured in the last SD game).
Green Bay over Seattle - Brett Favre. 'Nuff said.
Giants over Dallas - I still don't trust Tony Ohno in a big game, he doesn't have half the composure people keep claiming he does. Also, the Cowboys look like they peaked some time in November while the Giants just feel more hot right now.
This is me being polite.

by CrimsonLiederhosen on Jan 8, 2008 12:46 PM EST up reply actions

Pats-Jags easy, definitely
but the other three are easy?

i agree: Colts-Bolts seems like it'll be surprisingly close (though i guess you won't be surprised either). i'd go Colts, but i'm not as confident as i should be.

i'm also not comfortable when Brett Favre is a justification for why you'll win rather than a reason why the Seahawks will have 4 pick-sixes. yeah, yeah -- i know this year's supposed to be different. and i think the Seahawks reek of mediocrity. but i don't think i love the Pack either. i'd go with your call too, but not happily.

i'm with you about the Cowboys having peaked, which is the only reason i'd even consider not taking the most talented team in the NFC in this game. but how can you worry about Romo choking and NOT worry about Eli Manning choking???? do the last two games change everything? i definitely like your pick -- Plax always goes huge on the Cowboys, and Eli's looked good lately, while the 'Boys haven't exactly lit the world on fire the last few weeks (plus, no T.O.). but i still can't justify taking the Giants here.

by bleedjaxblue on Jan 8, 2008 1:17 PM EST up reply actions

this week
i'm taking the home teams. i mean, higher seeds have something like a 77% winning rate in the divisional round since this playoff format. better team + HFA + week of rest (sometimes several weeks) = huuuuge advantage.

on top of that, i don't think we've ever had a year like 2007 where the top 2 seeds in each conf were so far above the rest of the pack. sure the cowboys have been shaky recently, but if andre gurode is healthy they will again put up 30 or 40 on the giants and win in a walk (30 if they don't have TO, 40 if they do).

basically, the top 4 teams went a combined 55-9, and 3 of those 9 were against each other (GB-DAL, NE-DAL, NE-IND). i don't see them losing at home after being rested & healthy.

NE 38, JAX 22
IND 27, SD 13
GB 28, SEA 17
DAL 31, NYG 21

more than 2 TDs?
the colts are really good, but i think you're underrating the SD defense. they're super-talented and on a serious roll. basically, ever since cromartie cracked the starting lineup, they've been a wrecking crew. nobody is going to put up 35 or 40 on them.

by jpahk on Jan 8, 2008 11:46 PM EST up reply actions

let's be clear
the colts are easily the better team. i don't think the chargers will beat the colts. i don't even particularly think they will hang with the colts. but i do think the game will not be high-scoring, and it's tough to win by more than 2 TDs (especially "a lot more" as you claimed in your previous post) unless you put up a big number on offense. sure they could win 27-3 or something but i don't think the chargers will be that bad offensively. their D does generate a lot of turnovers and that will set them up for a couple of scoring drives. and rivers has really shown me something.

of course, a lot of this depends on gates. if he's hurt then it's going to be a lot tougher for them to score. vincent jackson and chris chambers are nice complementary pieces, but they need to have the big man in there if only to draw the attention of bob sanders much of the time.

by jpahk on Jan 9, 2008 1:01 PM EST up reply actions

you're crazy, rivers doesn't suck
okay, real digression here, but whatever.

QBs i'd definitely rather have than rivers, if i had to win 1 game:
brady
p manning
brees
palmer
roethlisberger
romo
favre
garrard

QBs who are not obviously better or worse than rivers:
hasselbeck
cutler
anderson
campbell
mcnabb
warner
garcia
bulger

QBs who are definitely worse, but only a little worse:
e manning
schaub
pennington
kitna

everybody else? give me rivers any day.

by jpahk on Jan 9, 2008 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

sigh
that's what i deserved, i suppose.

of course you are right--if indy beats SD comfortably, as you and i both predict they will, you will be vindicated and i will be forced to admit that rivers sucks. because as we all know, any non-sucky QB could beat the colts in indy after a bye with his only real receiving target hobbled. and YPG is the only way to measure the true worth of a QB who happens to have the league's rushing champ to hand off to.

by jpahk on Jan 10, 2008 12:27 AM EST up reply actions

I'm with you
I think the Colts win by the largest margin of any team this weekend.
