Community MLB Player #10

Jake Peavy joins Johan as the only pitchers selected thus far, winning by a decent margin over the man that inspired Grady's Ladies. Joe Mauer steps into double figures, while Ryan Howard is bumped again.

Fantasy is not the focus of these polls. Overall play is the general thing to keep in mind when you value the player here. It's all about who you'd want to build a team around here in 2008 and for the next few years beyond it. Anyone that receives under 5% of the vote is subject to removal, with 2% being automatic.

If you vote "Other," please specify who you'd like to see on there.

How?
is it not siezmore? The guy is a great offensive and defensive player.. he has great speed, he's young, and he's making little money..

Vlad? A DH? more votes?

Vlad
I agree about Vlad. He's Top 20 definitely, but I would consider him closer to 20 than 10. He's too old to be this high up.

Because
Sizemore is the most over rated player in Major League Baseball.  The only difference between him and guys like Alex Rios and Corey Hart is a little defense and a little speed.  Granderson and Markakis are on his level, but don't get as much love.  Even Brad Hawpe had a better year than him.

Sizemore the 10th best player in baseball?  I say no.

by nyy601 on Jan 28, 2008 10:41 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

re
Look at hawpe's home/road and I can tell you why no Rocky should be ever considered "best of" anything unless he puts up Bonds 2001 numbers. The same goes for Holliday. Holliday is Trot Nixon 1999-2003 playing in Coors.

What
Sizemore, no.  But even more no is Joe Mauer.  Dude's a good player, probably top 25-30, but not top 10.  He's not even the top catcher in the game, let alone the 10th best player.  I have to say Beckett, just because of what he can do to you when he is on.  He has crazy stuff, just look at the playoffs for an example.  If not him, then Holliday.  Carried his team in September.

BOSSMAN > Sizemore
:-)

is there anyone here who doesn't think BOSSMAN will do 30-30 in 08?

I would love it...
... but I'd hardly say he's nearly a lock for it. I love watching him play though. He's a fun player.

by grozzy on Jan 28, 2008 11:17 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

well
he hit 24 home runs and stole 22 bases in 129 games last year...and that was his first full year. assuming he avoids injury this year, how can you not see him doing 30-30? I think he'll do 40-40 in 09

Other
Soriano, still.  I am enjoying watching the poll go by though.  If limited to just this list, I'd go Sizemore or BJ Upton.

OTHER
Let me know when we get to Nick Markakis. Or Lincecum. I will be waiting.

Vlad...
how the hell are people voting for Vlad right here?  I still don't get it.  The guy is a DH within a year or two, at the latest.

I'd take Ortiz and Howard over him in a heartbeat, and they're not even on this list, deservedly so.

Mauer and Sizemore are easily the most complete position players for an all-around game on this list at this point, especially factoring in position.

As for Mauer not being the best C, the only one you can even argue is Martin over him, and that's only based on last season's injury to Mauer.  Mauer's ceiling is still higher, and if healthy, he's easily the best and most complete catcher.

yet
It's still way too early to be bandying Upton's name about in the top 10 in baseball.  Especially if you're not looking at Curtis Granderson yet.

Can Upton be top 10 in the future?? By all means yes. Is he now?  Probably not, no.

In fact, based on career means, Sizemore and Granderson make a little bit more sense than 129 G's of Upton.

by cubsfan2883 on Jan 29, 2008 3:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

we're not talking 2007 here
... read the paragraph above the poll... its about who you would want to build a team around... for 08 and the next few years... aside from Arod, and maybe Pujols and Santana .... I think Upton has a strong case for being more valuable than everyone else in MLB... he plays a premium position and he plays it well, and he only just started. His makeup, talent, and raw ability is exemplary . his talent has never been questioned. it was the Rays' brass that brought up the quetions because they didnt handle him well... I haven't heard anyone even suggest that his 129 games in 07 were a fluke... except for the batting average, but I disagree with those skeptics.

and actually, I think king Felix should be on the poll about now.

So what's so special about a kid
Neither Sizemore, nor Granderson are ancient.

In fact, if I were building a team over the next few years, those two would for sure be over Upton.  As would several others.  To denigrate someone just because they disagree with you, as sarcastic as you may have intended it, is ridiculous.

He's had one good year, at least Granderson's had two.

We'll see how Upton does this year.  I like him I just wouldn't put him in my top 10.

by cubsfan2883 on Jan 29, 2008 3:41 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

pedigree
both Uptons have Griffey/Arod type ability. Granderson does not. neither does Sizemore. its quite simple.

by daveh33 on Jan 29, 2008 4:02 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

felix is great
but i think most worry about his arm exploding. not sure i'd want to build around a guy with questions like that hanging around him.

by larry on Jan 29, 2008 3:45 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

If possible
I'd like to avoid a run-off between Vlad and Sizemore. I'll probably put up the next poll around 6, so whoever's winning by then wins, even if it's just 1 vote.
