Giants & Rangers

Looks like the G-Men are letting Pete Happy go to Philly, which as a Giants fan I can't say that I am too disappointed, but I realize whatever we put there may very well be Sub-Pedro.
What are the options? Dallas McPherson?? Frandsen-but he has no pop right?

Just noticed the Rangers got Jason Jennings for pennies on the dollar, whereas Houston had to deal Hirsh, Taveras, and Purpura's severed head. It looks like the rotation could actually be slightly better this year, and how far off is Hurley??
How long will Broussard start at 1st?
Is Botts/Salty a better option come June??
Are they destined for another 75-80 win season?

the giants
are going to trade for derek jeter and convert him to third base.

Honestly, the latest rumor has Joe Crede going to the Giants. I am not opposed to Brandon Inge if Detroit pays a lot of his salary. And just wondering if anyone thinks Aramis Ramirez is available.

Don't say that, even Ingest.
I'd would be adamantly opposed to Inge, who is not a substantial upgrade over Feliz offensively and a substantial downgrade defensively.

I like Crede.  I believe his offensive upside is higher than Feliz's, and his defense is pretty damn outstanding.  Whether he'll meet that upside, and whether there's any reason whatsoever to believe he'll be healthier for us than he was for the Sox, that's the question.  And more importantly, that's the question that makes me think he's not worth giving up anything for.  If we were signing him as an FA, I'd be moderately optimistic, but he's not worth losing a perfectly useful player.

Substantial downgrade defensively

What are you smoking?  Inge is a fantastic defensive player.  I don't see how you can say you would be adamantly opposed to Inge, but you like Crede.  Why would you want the guy coming off back surgery, who offensively isn't all that different from Inge?

I will agree that Crede has offensive upside higher than Feliz, but so does Inge.

rangers
Hurley - expect to see him up at around the all-star break

Wash recently said that he doesn't plan to platoon Botts (who will be getting a look at 1B in ST) with Broussard. So basically, its Big Ben's job to lose. If I had to guess though, I'll bet we see some kind of platoon in the second month.

I'll say Salty's the better bet over Botts come june.

Afraid so. Might break .500 if their lucky

think i misread your question a bit
According to J.D, Salty is now a full-time catcher so don't expect him to see much time, if at all, at 1B.  Like I said though if i had to guess today i'll bet we see a Broussard/Botts platoon come may or june.

if i'm not mistaken, the giants receive 2
draft picks in return for losing feliz.  i'd be happy with that return in exchange for a guy whose value is derived solely from his defense.

although i expect feliz to slug .500 in one of these three seasons in philly.

geez
2 draft picks. I'd be pretty ecstatic over that from the Giants perspective:)

my mistake. it's just the supplemental
1 extra draft pick in the sandwich round.  i feel much better as a philadelphian.

ehhh
I'd still take that, especially if we got somebody 1/2 decent like Crede or Inge

Giants 3B Options
Early in the offseason, Sabean stated that Kevin Frandsen would get a chance to start at 3B in 2008, not 2B, but 3B.  Historically when Sabean makes a statement like this, you tend to not believe it, but when the season finally rolls around it turns out he wasn't BSing.  Couple that with his recent letter to the season ticket holders.  He pretty much said the starting OF would be Robert, Winn, and Rowand.  He then specifically addressed bringing young players into the lineup and pointed to Dan Ortmeier at 1B and Kevin Frandsen in the IF.

There could be a trade for Crede in the works, if Crede proves to be healthy in spring training, but I believe Sabean has Frandsen and Ortmeier penciled in as the starters at 1B and 3B right now.  They will start Durham at 2B and hope he does well enough to enable them to trade him at the deadline.  Then either Frandsen will move to 2B or Velez will move up from AAA to play 2B.  Schierholtz has worked out at 1B so he may be in the mix there too.

I personally don't want to see a trade made for anybody but a good young player who can man the position inexpensively for several years, so I can live with Frandsen and Ortmeier.  Hopefully Lowry and Sanchez both get off to good starts making one of them attractive to a team that has a young 3B or 1B with upside to trade.

wow
truly the worst lineup in baseball......and i don't think it's really even that close

by Wheelhouse on Jan 29, 2008 12:17 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

True
But it would still be the worst if they traded for Crede or Inge. I'd rather see them keep their powder dry and see if they can pick up a blocked prospect or an established player who needs to move to make room for a blocked prospect in midseason.  If Lowry and Sanchez can get off to good starts, their value will go way up.

Sanchez
Is Jonathan supposed to have the #5 spot, or is he competing for it?

by drwmsu1 on Jan 29, 2008 9:02 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Kevin Correia
Right now, the Giants rotation is Zito, Cain, Lowry, Lincecum and Correia.  I would expect Sanchez to start the season in the bullpen, or preferably starting in AAA.

The ideal scenario, IMO, would be for those 5 to be rotation with Sanchez in Fresno.  Lowry and Correia get out to strong starts with Sanchez rounding into form in Fresno.  The Giants then turn whichever one has the most trade value at the deadline into a starting 3B or 1B.

My criteria for acquiring a player for either position would be:

  1. Is their contract controlled for at least 3-4 years, or would I be comfortable signing them to a 4-5 year contract?(with Crede's injury history, this would appear to disqualify him).
  2.  Are they likely to be the best player for the position to be available in the next 2-3 years?
If they don't meet both criteria, I don't want to spend trade capital on them

Great trade for the Phillies
Feliz, Rollins and Utley are three infielders who can hit Ryan Howard in the chest.  Plus, Feliz' offensive duty will not be to take walks, but to protect Pat Burrell.  Considering what else was out there, great move by the Phils.
