Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

What do you think of this trade?

I am in a keeper league, what do you think of this trade? Give your opinion regardless of scoring and teams needs.

Adrián González 1B SD
2007 30HR 100RBI .282AVG
For
Ben Sheets SP MIL
2007 24GS 12W 5L 141IP 106K 3.82ERA

I see Gonzalez as an NL MVP sometime in the next Three years, But I need strikeouts. Sheets can't go on the DL every year, can he?

What?
My opinion is I need to know the scoring and team needs because scoring and team needs are two of the most important parts of making a trade.

That said, Why would anyone choose Sheets here?  He's been hurt parts of each of the last 3-4 years?

He hasn't started 30+ games since 04'.

That said he's been an above average starter his entire career and Gonzalez does play in a pitchers park.

I suppose if you need K's... and don't have a hole at 1b, you keep Sheets. (or if you have Gonzo, and have another 1b to play, you deal for Sheets).  I think you may be able to pick up a safer SP though, if you're moving Gonzo

I agree it all depends on the scoring/league...
as usual.

But I would actually go with Sheets, despite the risk.  He's still got a lot of potential, and when healthy is a top 20-30 pitcher at least.

Gonzalez' numbers as a 1b (due to park, etc.) are almost always replaceable.  Heck, you could probably ride waiver-wire hot streaks and get about the same production at 1b over the course of the year.

+1
1B are so easy to find its rediculous.  The only problem for me is Sheets.  Going into this you know what you are getting.  110+ really good innings, and then he will get hurt right when you need him.  Just for the pure fact that there are 15 other 1Bs who will put up similar numbers to Adrian, go with Ben Shits.

Not sure i agree with
Gonzalez being a future MVP candidate.  He is a good hitter, but i dont see him putting up MVP numbers.

Are Ks, that hard to find in the auction/Draft?

Keep Gonzalez
I don't think Adrian Gonzalez will ever be an MVP, but I think he will consistently put up similar numbers to what he did last season.  For whatever reason, probably injuries, Ben Sheets has never lived up to what his potential appears to be and time is running out for him to ever do it.

I hate to be spreading suspicion on players....
... but does anyone think that Sheets possibly took PEDs at some point in his career. If I recall correctly, his first couple years, he was very good, but struggled a lot with back problems that kept him as nothing better than an average pitcher. Then all the sudden in 04 he breaks out. He stays healthy, adds a couple MPHs to his fastball and is outstanding. Then all the sudden the MLB starts to crack down on PEDs. Sheets falls apart. He cant stay healthy and he loses the velocity. His body keeps running into weird problems that sink his seasons before they really get going.

This is all anecdotal evidence, but injury problems have been a common reason for a player to end up trying them. It must be very frustrating to have the talent but injuries hold you back. In fact, I would doubt his gain in MPH was directly from PEDs, but was just a result of being healthy. Its a shame that his body wont let him fulfill his promise, but I just dont think he will ever be the pitcher he could.

Just a thought and I would honestly hope that this wouldnt be the case. I thought I would throw the idea out there to see what others think though.

No red Flags
I don't think that blisters and oblique strains are the types of injuries associated with someone who use to use PEDs for a couple of years.

He always had great stuff going back to his Olympic days
