Interesting Young Players

I want to make a list of Interesting Young Players who are no longer rookies technically, but who are still young and/or unproven. I have a couple of different ideas of what to do with such a list, what to use it for, but the first step is to make the list. I'd argue that such a list should include no one who has more than one year of experience.

Let's see....guys that would interest me.

Alex Gordon
Delmon Young
Adam Jones
Jarrod Saltalamacchia
Asdrubal Cabrera
Justin Upton

Who else?

i'd be interested in josh fields. lots of power but also lots of strikeouts (largely because he seems unable to hit major league fastballs). i could see him becoming a very good, three true outcomes type player or washing out if he can't adjust.

Lessee
I would include Billy Butler, Hunter Pence, Josh Hamilton, Mark Reynolds and even Ryan Braun--no way he stays at that level, right?

You didn't list any pitchers, but to me Owings, Hughes, Andrew Miller, Dice-K, Gallardo and Danks would be at the top.  I am omitting Lincecum because I think this community already has its mind made up on his future.

John, you said only one full year of experience, does Lastings Milledge work?  I believe he has less than 500 AB's, it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on him.

He just fetched Young in a trade.  That's already more than most pitchers with his track record.

Andy Marte
More than one year removed from prospect-dom, but still fairly young and very unproven.  Or maybe you'd say he's proven in a negative way, but if so, why did he bust so badly?

I'd also second Hermida and Mark Reynolds.

Here's an unusual one: Rick Ankiel.

I don't think it's a conincidence
that the other highly-touted braves INF prospect, wilson betemit, busted out, either

Interesting
Would you be saying it is because these 2 prospects were overated or that the Braves are somhow deficient in developing talent. i'll assume you meant the former becasue the latter would be dumb.

Looking at Marte's minor league numbers the other day I was kinda surprised to lok again with fresh eyes and see a guy who couldnt hit .290 even at lower levels. In other words everybody will point him out as a guy who didnt live up to his tools if he fails instead of considering the possibility that he just wasn't good enough.

by casejud on Jan 26, 2008 10:37 PM EST up reply actions

I wasn't very big on Marte
I didn't like the k's or avg. but he was really young for the levels he was at.  Still young, but I'm surprised he isn't doing better.  From a couple of things I've read, maybe attitude is a factor.

by Yoda @ Minor League Ball on Jan 27, 2008 2:47 PM EST up reply actions

Like you, I too had my doubts on Marte,
and part of the reason was the reason you mentioned - not being able to hit for a very high BA at ANY level, though I know he was young for the levels he was at for the early part of his career.

Hello Yoda,

Regarding the attitude part, I just read a report recently (don't remember where, but I think it was based on a credible source - Cleveland Plain Dealer, perhaps,) that Marte's attitude in the Winter League hasn't been that good, and likewise, his performance in the Winter League hasn't been that good either, batting just .198/.313/.260, 30 G/96 AB/6 2B/0 HR/12 RBI/14 BB/29 K, according to MinorLeagueBaseball's profile page.

For me, Marte is starting to get into the category of Michael Aubrey in the sense that "anything we can get from him will be considered a bonus."  In Aubrey's situation, it's due to a constant string of injuries and lack of consistent playing time; in Marte's situation, it's not really excelling at the Minor League level for any extended length of time and not taking advantage of the limited opportunities he's had to this point, and granted, he hasn't had many chances to this point, but conversely, he has not forced the Indians to keep him in their immediate plans to this point either.  Blake's extended period of solid play both offensively and defensively in 2007 is the main reason Marte was kept at AAA Buffalo, and Marte didn't really light it up at AAA Buffalo to force the Indians to reconsider their decision, outside of one hot month (July or August - can't remember which, but I believe he hit 4 HRs and had something like 21 RBIs if I remember correctly.)

That's been the main problem with Marte in my opinion - he shows flashes of great power and offense, but can't stay consistently solid throughout, going through extended dry spells.  On top of that, his defense has been more erratic than you'd expect from someone who was reported to be a plus defender.

One thing is pretty well for certain regarding Marte in the 2008 season - this will likely be his final chance to impress the Indians and deliver on the potential he was reported to have when he was acquired from Boston in the Marte-Crisp (and others) deal.  Marte is out of options beginning this season, which is a main reason why Marte will begin in Cleveland as a backup to Blake.  In addition, with 3B prospects Wes Hodges likely starting at AA Akron and Beau Mills likely starting at High-A Kinston, Marte does not have much time and leeway left to impress the Indians and show he can be the future starter at 3B for the next several seasons.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Take care and have a great day!

The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.

I second the Buck nomination
I think he'll have a better major league career than at least half the players mentioned in this thread, but probably closer to 80-85% of the players mentioned. I might be overrating him, but I think he's going to be great (His HR power might top out at 20, but if he can hit 45 doubles and 10 triples a year he won't lack for power. Isn't that really the only question about him that isn't related to health?)

by tricer @ Minor League Ball on Jan 26, 2008 5:20 PM EST reply actions

Upton
Has some great credentials.

Some solid minor league numbers, on top of a hometown belonging to David Wright and being a brother of a top prospect. He is a great player and a great athlete and a future star. But yes John should definitely give his input.

by METSMETSMETS on Jan 26, 2008 5:39 PM EST up reply actions

He may not have been as good
as his numbers suggest, but the guy definitely has many more .900 OPS seasons left in him.

by elrey34 on Jan 26, 2008 10:44 PM EST up reply actions

Could people please quit parroting...
that Upton isn't as good as his numbers suggest?  Oh, the dreaded strikeouts!  Give it up!  He is 22 yr. old and a staggering talent.  He's hitting the ball 430 feet and he hasn't even filled out.  Sounds like people are trying to lower his value so they can get him in the draft or maybe sour grapes cause they already missed him.  His numbers do suggest how good he is and then some!

by butkussayers on Jan 27, 2008 1:38 AM EST up reply actions

It's the unsustainable BABIP
and LD% that makes people believe that. I'm saying he wasn't a .900 OPS bat last year, but he can be next year and probably will be years after. But if he does the same thing this year and the BABIP and LD% drop to a more sustainable level, he probably won't have a .900 OPS.

Nobody is denying he's excellent and will only get much better.

by elrey34 on Jan 27, 2008 4:53 PM EST up reply actions

I undestand
what you are saying.  It is so exciting to see such an electric young player like Upton (he reminds me so much of a young and healthy Eric Davis).  It will be fun to see what happens to him in the coming years.  Will the Upton boys end up as the best brother combo in baseball history?

He may have too many AB's to be considered for this, but Stephen Drew is very intriguing to me.  He has 750+ AB's in a year and a half, but he really looked solid in the postseason last year.
I expect Drew to be a top 10 SS in MLB by next year.
The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again.

In light of how wrong your experimental projection was for him in your 2007 book, I think it would be interesting to read why he performed so horribly and whether he still has the promise to be an everyday catcher with a top-10 bat at the position.

by okbluejays on Jan 26, 2008 6:16 PM EST reply actions

he hit a respectable .255/.379/.431 away from that pitcher's park Coors field.

Young and Unproven
I am interested in what your intentions are with this list.  I know that a lot of us are interested in young players/prospects at least in part due to fantasy leagues.   It is very frustrating that as soon as the 131st AB happens or that 151st out is recorded, that young players vanish from prospect sites.  I would be thrilled to see John include players who have less than one full year of MLB action included in prospect reports, even if not in his book.   I mean, is Mark Reynolds STILL only a C+ prospect?  BP projected him as a utility guy.  Things change, it would be nice if the information on young players changed as well, even if they passed an arbitrary number of appearances in the Bigs.
Anyone else feel the same way?

Pelfey looks absolutely stunning when he's on. Anyone see him against the Braves? Filthy.

He can touch 97, his 83 curveball is unhittable at times, and his changeup at 87 is like a sinker.

Have you thought of doing something like "The Scouting Note Book" which was published by Sporting News in Association with Stats Inc. but is no longer being done.  We have all these prospect books analyzing skills and projectability but we have nothing for established major league players, young or old.  Why isn't the Scouting Notebook being done anymore?  It was really the only one of it's kind and I personally would love to see it come back.  What do you think?  It's kind of strange that we actually have more information about prospects then actual Major League Players.

Volquez - who may have got the double whammy of being traded away from a rotation spot and to a less favourable park
Iwamura - I did some research on power drop-offs for Japanese hitters.  A I should have hit 18 HRs not 7.  His oblique injury, or just bad research?
Hamilton - Talk about human interest

Not knowing what you're doing with such a list, I'd add Rick Vanden Hurk to it... he seems to have slid through prospectdom due to his injury.  He's a guy who I'd really like to know your opinion on now.

The Dodgers won't win a playoff series until the Cool-a-Coo returns.

James Loney
Now that he has his feet "wet", I look for him to really build on an exceptional first year, especially in the power/extra base dept.

Chris Denforia
Josh Hamilton's emergence coupled with this guy's TJ made him expendable for Marcus McBeth, which I thought was still quite a bit, but I haven't seen Denforia's name mentioned. Will the year off have him too rusty to win the Oakland CF job out of spring training? Post-Kotsay, CF is his for the taking, and I'd be shocked if the team even tried Buck there, as has been rumored. Carlos Gonzalez belongs in Sacto until he hits his way out, but I'd like to hear what people think of Denforia. The star is fading on his only real competition, Ryan Sweeney.

Guys I'd like to discuss in more detail include:

Felix Pie
Lastings Milledge - what will become?
Elijah Dukes - see Milledge.
Kurt Suzuki
Ben Francisco - will anyone ever give him a serious look?
Wilson Betemit - ditto. Looks like he could become a productive 3B.
Dallas Braden - Destined for 4A-dom?
Andy Marte - biggest disappointment since ...

Post All Star Break Stats
Guess who's numbers these were after the AS Break...

.340/.401/.555  956 OPS with 10 HR in 256 AB.

Should be a big year for this guy who has been mentioned quite a bit in this post.

Matt Kemp
The Dodgers seems down on him for his attitude and defensive.  He seems to lack baseball experience when you watch him play but he has a ton of talent.  Do you think he'll end up with another season split between the Dodgers bench, Dodgers RF and AAA or will they just stick him out there or trade him.

Brandon Wood
...unless there's some reason why he wouldn't be included in this mix.  Based on the names I've seen while scrolling down through the comments, I can't imagine why he hasn't been mentioned so far.
