Your Top 10s...

I hate fantasy diaries, but I'm bored and have been thinking about this a fair bit so I'm posting one.
I'm in a 30 team Keeper Sim league (50 players deep) and I'm looking for opinions on my top 10 prospects. Any feedback would be welcome and anyone who wants to post their own top 10 prospects from their own team, I promise to comment on it (provided you comment on mine).
So, here it is (I included John's grades plus an occasional comment of my own)

  1. Andy Laroche, 3B (A-)
  2. Jed Lowrie, SS (A-; I agree with John, I love his bat and think his D will be good enough to stick at SS)
  3. Michael Bowden, RHP (B)
  4. Ryan Tucker, RHP (B; I like Bowden's polish a bit more, at least until Tucker's slider comes around)
  5. Josh Donaldson, C (B; love his bat)
  6. Brian Duensing, LHP (B-; I keep going back and forth between 6 and 9 for Duensing, his ceiling isn't great, but I like his chances of getting there. For now it's 6.)
  7. Josh Reddick, OF (B-)
  8. Caleb Gindl, CF (C+)
  9. John Tolisano, 2b (C+, future OFer IMO)
  10. Joe Benson, CF (ungraded, raw but I love the tools)
Some Others
Anthony Rizzo, 1b (my big choice for Boston Sleeper)
Craig Hansen, RHP (I still like his chances)
Shelby Ford

Any comments are welcome and again, if you comment on my top 10, I promise to comment on yours.

Really like LaRoche
hopefully he can get a chance to play this year.  I wouldn't be surprised if he hit 30 homers this year if he was given an everyday job.

All 3 are 30 team leagues
BNSL started this off-season so obviously I had their farm and dealt a few away.  ISBL/WLSB have been a rebuilding process.

mine...
Mine:
  1. Johnny Cueto
  2. Andy LaRoche
  3. Wade Davis
  4. Fernando Martinez
  5. Carlos Triunfel
  6. Jason Heyward
  7. Michael Burgess
  8. Dellin Betances
  9. Wes Hodges
  10. Sean West
Others: Pedro Beato, Franciso Pena
Guys who just miss due to ABs/IP: Adam Jones, Pelfrey

I love LaRoche. He should be the 3B in LA this year, but who knows what actually happens. I had the chance to get Votto for him in my league, and turned it down even though I needed a 1B. I love everything about the guys abilities. It should be interesting to watch that battle during spring training and during the season.

I had Bowden, but dealt him earlier this offseason. He should be fine in the long run, but the depth of the Red Sox pitching frightens me a bit to the point where he might not break the rotation with them. He should be a fine #3 though in the long run.

Lot of high ceiling/high risk guys
but if Baker doesn't mess the Reds' young arms up and a few of them develop that looks really nice.  I'm stoked the Braves got Heyward last last year; was a great pick.

Pena
I have/like Francisco Pena as well, but with the horrible season he had this year I couldn't justify listing him. I'm optimistic on him still though. Being described as having 'cankles' in the BA chat was concerning though. How many MLB player have cankles?

Sean West is another guy I like, I drafted him in the past but dealt him off.

I'm hoping Torre really gives Laroche the chance to win the job over Nomar, it really shouldn't be much of a fight (much as I loved Nomar back in the day). Kind of funny that Torre is replacing Grady Little...

This is me being polite.

Jed Lowrie
I'm going to have to pay attention to him this season.  I never really thought he was that special but I must have been way off with so much love for him.

One of Those Things
Are not like the others.  How the hell did LaRoche not end up on someone's roster?  Other than Lowrie, he's the only one who'd sniff a top 50 list.  I'd also put him at least 50 spots above Jed too.  Not that sold on him, but I could be wrong.  Mahalo

Laroche
I'm using MLB rookie eligibility in deciding who is a prospect for the purposes of this list.
Both Laroche and Lowrie will be in my starting lineup this season. Bowden and Duensing will both have a shot at my #5 SP slot depending on projections.
This is me being polite.

Comparing Top 10s
This is very subjective.  It's nice to read about everyone's top 10s, but almost impossible to rate them.  First, it depends on your major league roster.  It's strength, as well as if you are rebuilding or contending, and other teams' Top 10s are all factors in evaluating your talent.  That said, I think LaRoche will have a nice season, but I'm not nearly that high on Lowrie that I would play him in a sim league (at least not if I was expecting good production from him).  After that, this seems like a weak list, unless you have traded away prospects to contend; again, a lot of other factors affect this.  I would say this system in a vaccuum in a 30 team league would be in the bottom 3rd.  That said, I'm not trying to pick on it.  I've traded away a lot of my prospects to contend, also in a 30 team league (just started with the Royals)...here is my top 10:
  1.  Mike Moustakas
  2.  Danny Duffy
  3.  Bryan Anderson (C)
  4.  Blake Wood
  5.  Jeff Marquez
  6.  Sam Runion
  7.  Matt Mitchell
  8.  Peter Bourjos
  9.  Derrick Robinson
  10. Adrian Ortiz
Just missing:  Stephen Marek, Blake Johnson, Dusty Hughes

This is also not a knock-your-socks-off list, but it's important to realize that Hochevar/Cortes/Pimentel and some other were dealt to strengthen my majors.  Anyway, it's fun to read lists, but I'm not sure I can make any objective remarks on yours without knowing other circumstances.

Thoughts
Firstly, my MLB roster has undergone some changes this offseason.
My rotation is (and has been) very, very solid (Beckett, Web, Buehrle, Guthrie, Carpenter. I usually go with a 4 man rotation though), as is my bullpen (Neshek, Okajima, Delcarmen, Kobayashi, Grabow, King) though that wasn't true last season (far from it, 54% of saves converted).
My Lineup was one of the top lineups in the league but has been bumped down a fair bit when I moved some older guys who were starting to decline (partly for younger position players, partly for RP, my pen was a HUGE problem. hey weren't all great trades either in retrospect). I'm looking to ride my pitching for the most part. Coming into this off-season Tucker was the only guy in the Top 10 who was in my system. I may move some to solidify my lineup more, we'll see.

Anderson and Wood are two guys I like a lot. not a knock against Moustakas or Duffy, I just have a liking for those two guys in particular.
As you said, not a knock your socks off list, but if you're using your farm to feed your big league team, then it doesn't have to be. We have one guy who never has anyone really in his minors, he dealt off every draft pick he had in order to feed his big club. I've gone the same way briefly in the past, but I love having the prospects so I always end up rebuilding the farm.

This is me being polite.

by CrimsonLiederhosen on Jan 19, 2008 7:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
That helps definitely.  I think you got what I was trying to say, which is that it's tough to evaluate without knowing the other things, such as is that your best asset, or something you use to help you compete.  Thanks for the Anderson and Wood compliments, this is my first year in a sim, and I have used some of my farm to acquire Dunn/Tejada/Figgins/Bonser and Belisle, in effort to compete this year with the rest being the 2007 Royals.  I also traded away Teahen and Dejesus, so I'm anxious to see what happens.

by killa on Jan 19, 2008 8:29 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah definitely
My Sox and Nats have been horrible but neither were really my fault.  No GM can rebuild a team in 1 or 2 seasons, takes some real on the field chemistry to do a last to first switch and that isn't likely in a sim league with the software.  I've always tried to make improvements when I could without jeopardizing my future because from the start it was clear if I was going to win it was going to take time.

The Rays having just started this year, it's hard to tell what we will do.  I think I can improve on the year they had but I've obviously kept the future in mind looking for playoffs in 2010.  The 3 deals I've made were necessities and all 3 unfortunately made my MLB team a little weaker.  If FA goes well, I still think I can improve on their performance last season but everyone in the AL better watch out soon!!!!  I'm coming for ya Jim!

actually
I've seen some REALLY fast turnarounds (year or less) but you have to be a real hot hand at trading, you can't be content to sit back and let guys develop.
This is me being polite.

by CrimsonLiederhosen on Jan 19, 2008 10:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Well depends on the situation
and the league.  You pull 2/3 lop sided deals or get lucky in FA and sure you can turn around fast.  Perhaps I shouldn't say never but 99% of the time you aren't going last to first without some pity being thrown your way.  If the league is competitive all around, it simply shouldn't happen.  Baseball isn't set up like that but every league's rules differ.  As Kill said, this topic, besides simply posting the lists, is pretty much irrelevant because every situation is different.

by jfish26101 on Jan 19, 2008 11:19 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Well
Realistically speaking, most everything said on a forum like this is pretty irrelevant.
That doesn't mean it can't be fun though :)

interesting
reddick is sort of like gindl one year later, feels like.

it might be early but i think rizzo is probably better than tolisano or benson.

donaldson is really interesting, although sometimes college hitters get your hopes up in their first taste only to dash them later.  he went really high in my league draft (which i ceaselessly pimp) this year (beginning of the second round in a 16-team league, #18 out of all 2007 draftees + signees).

30 is a lot of teams.  this group is all interesting but doesn't knock my socks off, per se.  but i'd have to see everybody else's list to really get an idea where you stand.  (not suggesting you actually post them, just saying.)

i'll throw out mine, because it's saturday.  (16 teams, like i mentioned.)

  1. clayton kershaw (LHP - LA)
  2. jordan schafer (CF - ATL)
  3. desmond jennings (CF - TB)
  4. lars anderson (1B - BOS)
  5. chris tillman (RHP - SEA)
  6. james mcdonald (RHP - LA)
  7. nick noonan (2B - SF)
  8. jesus montero (C - NYY)
  9. josh rodriguez (SS - CLE)
  10. andrew lambo (OF/1B - LA)
next group - alderson, elbert, oscar tejeda, justin maxwell, wes hodges

by wily mo on Jan 19, 2008 6:57 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yup
Agreed on Gindl/Reddick. I also got Alderson at a similar spot in our draft (17).
Rizzo's placement I struggled with too, i decided to err on the side of caution in the face of possible homerism.

I took Tillman and Anderson in previous drafts and dealt them both off, both are guys I wish I could have back again, but they were still good deals so I don't feel too bad. Still, I like Tillman a lot even though it's against my personal policy to take Seattle prospects (they just always seem to end up with significant injury issues). Nice to have Tejeda outside your top 10, but that's a lot easier in a 16 team league.

The other team lists are REALLY all over the place. Some teams are loaded like you wouldn't believe while others are barren enough to make the worst teams in MLB blow them away.

This is me being polite.

My number one league
12 team auction 5x5 mixed...10 man minors, guys stay until 600/200 or you early-promote them:
  1.  Tim Lincecum
  2.  Jay Bruce
  3.  Colby Rasmus
  4.  Andy Laroche
  5.  Johnny Cueto
  6.  Felix Pie
  7.  Ian Kennedy
  8.  Chris Marrero
  9.  Travis Buck
!0. Currently Vacant(2008 pick)

As a comparison here are the other best systems in my league...where do you think I rank?

1-Buchholz/Kemp/Pence/Garza/Wood/Balentien/BJones
elbert/Loewen Niemann

2-Gallardo/Gordon/Ellsbury/McCutchen/Gomez/Brignac
Villalona/FMart/Tabata/Dukes

I think #2 has loads of upside, and #1 has guys already contributing at the top, although the bottom falls off fast.  The rest of the league has 3-4 solids (i.e. Joba/Bailey/Snider/CGonzalez)
and that's it, or weaker systems.

I have another 24-team salary based league roster I'm more proud of. But it is not a deep minors league so I don't even have 10 true prospects.

Overlord has the worst collection of position players I've ever seen from somebody who actually felt their roster was pimp worthy

Your top 10
I think you're going to get some good impact talent out of the top half of your list. I like all 5 of those guys and think they'll contribute on the mlb level in the next few years (obviously some are farther out than others, but eventually). However, I'm not a big fan of any of the guys on the bottom, with Reddick being the closest to actually being something for me. All in all, for a 30-team league it's a pretty decent list, and I would assume it's at least in the top 12 or so in your league.

I am also in a 30-team league, but we have yet to draft, and I have the 4th overall pick, so I expect to get two guys I can throw into this list. I've also dealt away guys like Michael Bowden and Matt Maloney this offseason in order to bring in everyday talent. It's also a replay league, so we haven't played the 07 season yet.

  1. Andrew Miller
  2. Daric Barton
  3. Jacoby Ellsbury
  4. Gio Gonzalez
  5. Josh Fields
  6. Jed Lowrie
  7. Desmond Jennings
  8. Adrian Cardenas
  9. Anthony Swarzak
  10. Kyle Drabek
I also have Chris Huseby and Alex Burnett, who I think a lot of people sleep on, but they still have big questions to answer, so we'll see what happens.

My Minor league system
Dynasty w/salaries, AL only, H2H, 5X5(OBP instead of AVG), 10 Teams:

Minor leaguers may be called up and sent down freely. Players may only be minor leaguers until the end of the year they qualify as a rookie. HOWEVER, each team gets to designate THREE graduated minor leaguers as "transition players" who may be treated like minor leaguers even though they no longer qualify. Did this make sense? There is a strong financial aspect to the league I havent detailed...

Further, players added during the season may not be kept, and minor leaguers may only be added through a yearly five round draft...

My three transition players are:
Dustin Pedroia
Asdrubal Cabrera
Kurt Suzuki.

My other minor leaguers are:
Fautino De Los Santos
Luke Hochevar
Jacoby Ellsbury
Lars Anderson
Garret Olson
Glenn Gibson (received for Elijah Dukes traded to the NL)
Bryce Cox
Brent Clevlen
Craig Hansen

I also have a large amount of draft picks in the upcoming draft (five rounds).

1 Pick 10
2 Pick 4
2 Pick 10
3 Pick 10
4 Pick 3
4 Pick 6
