Conundrum!

With my sim league's draft a few weeks away I have began a huge undertaking I have never bothered to attempt before: a big board for the entire draft. This is a full 30-team league with complete minor league systems, so the draft is a pretty big deal. It involves only players who made their American affiliated professional debuts the previous season (so it includes guys like LaPorta, L.Anderson and Matsuzaka this year, for example).

The difficulty I am having is sorting out the top of the draft.  I find that as you dig deeper the talent becomes less distinguishable, and, therefore, less relevant to judge correctly.

What I'm wondering is who would be your top 10 picks in such a format.

Here's my list, as it stands now:

  1. Daisuke Matsuzaka
  2. Joba Chamberlain
  3. Hideki Okajima
  4. Mike Moustakas
  5. Matt LaPorta
  6. Lars Anderson
  7. Jarrod Parker
  8. Ross Detwiler
  9. Max Scherzer
  10. Jason Heyward

Strat-o-Matic
I'm sure some of you heard it, that's what the sim is. So the fact that Matsuzaka, Chamberlain, and Okajima all did very well this past year makes them extremely valuable. The guy who has the #1 pick has already said that he's taking Dice-K. Joba is the next best option in a replay sim, IMO (immediate impact + talent level), and the guy with the #3 pick said he's taking one of those three.

But anyway, my point was that pitching is at a premium in a 30-team league, and defense counts.

Don't pick relief.
It's retarded.  There's a lot of it and you can always trade for it during the season as teams fall by the way side.  That's my pearl for the day.

rankings
I usually just rank my draft prospects in tiers. This is especially true after the top 10-15 picks.

If I had to rearrange your top 10... the big thing for me would be to move Okajima atleast below Jarrod Parker who might have been the best amateur arm in the draft. I could see a rationale for having Okajima above Detwiler and Scherzer (who will probably be a RP long term). Detwiler doesn't see to have an out pitch right now as his minor league K totals weren't good. I might move Heyward above Okajima as well.

So I take it Joba is in this draft because his debut the year before wasn't until HWB?

Overlord has the worst collection of position players I've ever seen from somebody who actually felt their roster was pimp worthy

yeah
Joba is available. Okajima is just really useful. I know Dice-K is going number 1, I can't see why Joba wouldn't go 2, and the guy with the number 3 pick said he was taking Okajima if he didn't get one of the other two, so while I agree with dropping Okajima, I know it's not going to happen.
