A. Jackson, G. Hernandez or D. Jennings?

Which one would you rather have on your team?  Choose between these 3 young second-tier OF prospects.  This mainly has a fantasy tilt to it, but those that don't like fantasy baseball can feel free to post as well.

I think Jackson likely lands in a corner OF slot, whereas Gorkys and Desmond can likely stick in CF.  Jackson probabaly has a little more power and a little less speed than the other 2.  But all 3 seem to have high ceilings.

Which would you rather have?

your pretty much right on.

id rank them like this

  1. Jennings
  2. Jackson
  3. Hernandez
im not a big fan of Hernandez's bat, but he still has a great all around package, except for power so far

Jennings
I wonder if Tb will have a change of heart and be able to deal unproven prospects for major league needs in tiem for Jennings to play.  With Crawford, Upton and Young set until the next decade, I wonder where he will play.  And when.

Well
Jennings likely won't be ready for a couple more years, so TB will not have to worry about such problems until 2009/2010.

I would argue that, depending on the situation, they may be best served trading Crawford.  Around the time that Jennings will be ready is when Crawford's contract will expire, and Crawford could bring a hefty sum via trade if he's still an All-Star caliber OF.  Of course, entertaining that idea would mean that Upton and Young have continued their own assent into stardom as well.

Jennings
I posted this before, but it was in a thread that was pretty far down the page at the time.

Since 1992, only two under-21 players have finished top 20 in the minors in steals while also having a .400+ OBP and .450+ SLG.

  1.  Desmond Jennings (2007)
  2.  Derek Jeter (1994)

Jeter vs Jennings
However, Jeter's batting average was 30 points higher in 1994 than Jennings' was in 2007.
Jay Bruce can DISAPPEAR

the difference
is a matter of 13 hits over the course of the season.  Really not that big of a deal.

The bigger deal is that Jeter did it mostly in AA and AA while Jennings was in A ball.

But the larger point is that it's very rare that a speedster has the plate discipline and power that Jennings has shown.

Question?
Going purely by stats (and age), the choice would be Jackson, but going by potential, would it be Jennings or Jackson?

P.S. How is Jackson fielding wise?  I mean, say he hits well enough in the majors....is he or Melky the better choice in center?

by hallofamer2000 on Sep 9, 2007 11:14 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Supposedly
Jackson is not very good in center.

by Dfarth on Sep 9, 2007 11:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

supposedly indeed
the consensus on melky (while in the minors) was that he wouldnt be able to cut it as a major league centerfielder and that his bat wasnt good enough to be a corner guy...now i'm not the biggest melky fan, and he's no andruw jones (in his prime) out there, but he can play a legit CF...whether the scouts who said he couldnt play a big league CF were flat out wrong or melky has improved his game a drastic amount is something i dont know, but i dont think too much stock should be put into what action jackson's defensive reports are

Difference is
They feared melky couldnt because he didnt have the speed so he would have to take perfect routes. Also if he gets much larger he may lost that range.

Austin Jackson on the other hand is just raw, he is insanely fast he just often takes really bad routes on balls that he should be able to get to easy

Because the scouts were wrong once
we should disregard scouting reports?

When I saw him
he looked pretty good on fly balls.  Took good routes, and made a couple pretty nice catches.  One going back to the wall, he tracked it well and made the catch up against the wall.

Granted, it was only once, but he's definitally got the tools to be a good CFer (didn't see his arm at all).
