Daily Prospect Thread 9/3
Adam White hit his first professional HR today for Mahoning Valley in a losing effort. He went 3-5 with 1 R and 3 RBI. Go WVU!

Didn't fall apart...
Could be kind of a hangover from being in the show and then going back down to the minors. He also could be hurt though I hate to say it.
All in all I was impressed with The Yankee Clippard when he was up and I think he'll be back though maybe with another team now. The Yanks are getting rather4 loaded with potentially sensational young starters.

Bailey great 1st AAA start
im going out on a limb here, but now with Kennedy/Joba in the majors. the next dominant pitching duo from 06 draft i think will be Bailey/Cahill for 08.

Indians' Overview!
jfish26101 - Thanks for the info. on White; I look forward to seeing what he can do next year with an offseason of rest, likely at Low-A Lake County.
Indians (MLB) - defeated the Twins 5-0; for the second time in a week, C.C. Sabathia outdueled Johan Santana:
Sabathia:
W (16-7) - 8.0 IP, 6 H, 1 BB, 6 K; 12 G/6 F; 70 S/30 B (3.24)
Santana:
L (14-11) - 6.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 1 HR (solo to Garko on a hanging changeup); 6 G/10 F; 73 S/32 B (3.15)
Santana loses for the fifth time this year to the Indians, becoming the first Twins pitcher to lose 5 to one team since Joe Decker lost 5 times to the A's in 1974. Santana also had one no-decision against the Indians.
Overall, Santana in his six starts against the Indians this season:
0-5, 1 no-decision (3 losses against Sabathia, 2 losses against Carmona.)
4.38 ERA
Just 8 runs of support by the Twins' offense in those 6 starts.
In today's start, besides the poor run support, two main problems for Santana in my opinion:
- All 3 BBs came around to score.
- Jason Bartlett's poor SS defense, as he committed an error on a potential double-play ball in the first inning, botched catching a relay throw from the OF that allowed Casey Blake to score in the second inning, and caught a ball that was on target to nail Victor Martinez at 3B when he attempted to reach 3B on a 1B to RF by Ryan Garko in the third inning. The Indians scored on all three occasions after Bartlett's poor defensive plays; the botched DP most likely would have prevented the Indians from scoring in the 1st inning, not botching the relay throw probably keeps Blake at 3B in the 2nd inning, and throwing out Martinez at 3B in the 3rd inning probably would have prevented them from scoring there as well. Bartlett now has 24 Es on the season.
The Indians' offense was able to provide support for C.C., as Lofton and Garko each had 2 hits, including Garko's 15th HR off a hanging Santana changeup. Recently-recalled OF Ben Francisco had an RBI double off Santana. The Indians also were very fundamentally sound, taking advantage of each Santana walk and all 3 Bartlett miscues to push a run across.
The Indians are now 6.0 games ahead of the Tigers, as the Tigers had the day off. They host the White Sox at Comerica Park on Tuesday night at 7:05 P.M.
LHP Aaron Laffey vs. RHP Kevin Slowey at 8:10 P.M. on Tuesday night.
Onto the Minors (* - denotes team that has secured a postseason spot):
AAA Buffalo - lost to Rochester (MIN) 8-5 to finish their season at 75-67 and 3rd place in the International League Northern Division, 8.5 games behind Scranton Wilkes-Barre (NYY) and 1 game behind Rochester (MIN):
RF Shin-Soo Choo - 2-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K (.260 - HR #3 - solo - I would think he'll be called up within the next day or so.)
3B Andy Marte - 1-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K (.267 - likely will be called up; it will be interesting to see if he can translate this current hot streak to the MLs, as well as finding out how much time he will get playing; Blake has been very solid defensively all season, though his bat has been more sporadic of late.)
LF Nathan Panther - 2-4, 1 R, 1 K (.400 - the 26-YO who batted .287/.418/.522 at High-A Kinston in 209 ABs finishes up his season with a pretty good at AAA Buffalo, where he's had limited experience in the past; he also threw out a runner at 1B.)
SS Mike Rouse - 1-4 (.277)
CF Brian Barton - 1-4, 1 2B, 2 K (.264)
LHP Jason Stanford - 4.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 1 HR (2-run,) 1 WP, 2 HB; 8 F; 40 S/21 B (4.11)
RHP Chris Niesel - 2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 HR (solo); 2 G/4 F; 17 S/8 B (4.50 - AAA debut for the 24-YO, 5'11" 195 lb. 9th-Rd. 2004 pick out of Notre Dame.)
*AA Akron - lost to Binghamton 9-8 (NYM,) as Binghamton scored 2 in the bottom of the 9th off RHP Jim Ed Warden; Akron finishes its season at 80-61, 1.5 games behind Erie (DET,) but good enough to secure a postseason spot - they will open up at Erie (I believe) later this week (probably Wednesday - not sure) in a best-of-5 series:
CF Trevor Crowe - 2-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 E (7-fielding,) 1 PO (1B) (.259 - not a bad recovery in the BA after hitting less than .200 for virtually all of the first half.)
DH Jordan Brown - 3-5, 1 R, 2 2B, 1 K (.333 - the 23-YO Eastern League MVP (according to a post on LGT) with another solid season: .333/.421/.484, 483 ABs/85 R/161 H/36 2B/2 3B/11 HR/76 RBI/63 BB/56 K/11 SB/2 CS; hit .361 over final 10 G, with 7 R/13 H/4 2B/1 HR/4 RBI/8 BB/8 K.)
1B Stephen Head - 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K (.276 - HR #3 - 2-run.)
C Matthew McBride - 3-4, 1 R, 2 2B, 1 HBP (.571 - 0/1 in throwing out runners attempting to steal 2nd; very impressive stint to this point for the 22-YO, 6'2" 215 lb. 2nd-Rd. Sup. 200y pick out of Lehigh University offensively at AA, especially with no High-A experience.)
RF Cirilo Cumberbatch - 1-5, 1 2B, 1 GIDP, 1 E (1-fielding) (.250 - decent stint at AA so far for the 21-YO Panamaian with no High-A experience.)
RHP Bobby Brownlie - 5.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 HR (2-run,) 1 WP; 10 G/1 F (3.17 - really strong G/F ratio.)
LHP Shawn Nottingham - H (1) - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 1 WP; 1 F (4.77 - first relief appearance this season.)
RHP Michael Finocchi - BS (2) - 0.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K (4.67)
RHP Jeff Stevens - H (8) - 1.0 IP, 3 K (3.17 - more dominant with the Ks like he was for most of the season up until recently.)
Binghamton:
1B Mike Carp - 1-4, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K (.251)
DH Sandy Alomar (rehab) - 0-2, 1 R (.188)
RHP Lino Urdaneta - W (1-1) 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB; 3 G (4.76 - was in the Indians' system for a brief period in 2003 when he was signed as a FA, but was lost in the Rule 5 Draft to the Tigers just over a month later; the Venezuelan originally signed by the Dodgers in 1996 as an International FA is now 27-YO.)
*High-A Kinston - defeated Myrtle Beach (ATL) 4-3, to finish with a second half record of 42-28 (2nd only to Wilmington (KC)) and an overall seasonal record of 87-52 (best in the Carolina League.) They will open at Salem (HOU) on Wednesday at 7:00 P.M. in a best-of-3 series.
SS Josh Rodriguez - 2-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 SB (21-2B & 3B) (.262 - solid recovery with the BA after a slow start in the first half of the season, hitting .238, .216, and .227 in April, May, and June respectively, as compared to .298, .299, and .429 in July, August, and September respectively. Overall, finished at .262/.351/.460, with 20 2B/9 3B/20 HR/82 RBI/68 BB/95 K/21 SB/8 CS.)
1B Matt Whitney - 0-5, 1 R, 4 K (.288 - BIG OUCH on the Ks, an area he's done better in for the most part this year.)
C Chris Gimenez - 2-2, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SB (3-2B) (.283)
DH Beau Mills - 0-4, 1 RBI, 3 K, 1 SF (.275 - OUCH on the Ks.)
3B Wes Hodges - 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI (.288)
2B Jared Goedert - 0-4, 2 K (.256)
LF Nick Weglarz - 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K (.143)
RHP Steven Wright - W (3-2) - 5.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 PO (1B); 6 G/6 F (7.13)
RHP Josh Tomlin - H (1) - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 K; 1 G (3.58)
LHP Ryan Edell - H (2) - 1.0 IP, 3 K (3.70 - in 31.1 IP as a reliever: 28 H/17 ER/4 HR/10 BB/38 K, 2.29 GO/AO, .241 BAA.)
RHP Erik Stiller - S (4) - 2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 K; 3 G/2 F (2.89)
Myrtle Beach:
CF Jordan Schafer - 1-4, 1 K (.294)
2B Brandon Monk - 1-4, 1 R, 2 K (.375)
LHP Carlos Sencion - L (2-2) - 5.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 8 K; 2 G/7 F (2.81 - the 22-YO Dominican in 64.0 High-A IP: 53 H/20 ER/6 HR/52 BB/76 K, 0.82 GO/AO, .225 BAA.)
Low-A Lake County - lost to Delmarva (BAL) 4-2 to finish their second-half record at 33-35, 5th place out of 8 teams in the South Atlantic League's Northern Division and an overall seasonal record of 64-74, 6th place out of 8 teams in the South Atlantic League's Northern Division):
SS Carlos Rivero - 0-4, 1 K (.261)
RF Roman Pena - 2-4, 1 2B, 1 E (8-fielding) (.240 - batting in the clean-up spot.)
C Brian Juhl - 0-4, 3 K (.235 - OUCH on the Ks; has 13 BB/20 K in 68 ABs, but the 35th-Rd. 2007 pick out of Stanford struck out in 8 of his last 10 ABs.)
LHP Ryan Morris - L (0-2) - 5.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 1 HR (solo); 6 G/4 F (5.22 - decent outing to finish the season for the 19-YO 4th-Rd. 2006 pick out of South Mecklenburg HS, NC.)
RHP Travis Turek - 3.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 HR (solo); 5 G/4 F (13.14 - a better outing, despite the HR, to finish a tough season for the 48th-Rd. 2006 pick out Santa Barbara JC, CA.)
Delmarva:
DH Brandon Snyder - 1-2, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 BB (.283 - HR #11 - solo off Morris.)
3B Billy Rowell - 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K (.273 - HR #9 - solo off Turek.)
RHP Pedro Beato - 2.0 IP, 2 K; 2 G/2 F (4.05 - "2s" are wild for the 20-YO, 6'6" 230 lb. Dominican out of St. Petersburg JC, FL.)
SS-A Mahoning Valley - lost to Williamsport(PHI) 14-4; MV is currently 37-33 and has 4 games remaining - 1 with Williamsport and 3 at State College (PIT,) as their last game is on Friday, Sept. 7):
CF Adam White - 3-5, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 K (.260 - HR #1; the BA continues to climb after a slow start. As I mentioned above, I look forward to seeing what he can do at Low-A Lake County next season after an offseason of rest.)
C Michael Valadez - 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 K, 1 PB (5) (.247)
2B Jeff Hehr - 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 E (5-fielding) (.239 - may be finding his bat again after slumping over the last several weeks.)
LHP Heath Taylor - L (3-3) - 4.2 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 WP; 4 G/7 F (2.35 - in probably the 10th-Rd. 2007 pick out of Oklahoma's last start of the season, arguably his worst start of the season at SS-A.)
RHP Nate Bunton - 1.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K; 1 G/1 F (7.71 - just the 11th G of the season for the 38th-Rd. 2006 pick out of Midland Lutheran College, TX, as he dealt with some type of injury, as he pitched from June 25-28, July 6-16, and August 12-Sept. 3; overall in 11.2 IP: 12 H/10 ER/0 HR/10 BB/6 K, 1.42 GO/AO, .261 BAA.)
Take care and have a great day!

The Indians called up Marte, Lara
Hi indiansfan,
Choo and Miller were left in Buffalo and I tend to believe it is the end for both in the Tribe plans. I would be very surprised if either is on the 40 when it comes to draft time. I think Marte might see some time at 3B but Mujica and Lara are strictly blowout fodder.
by sdtribefan on Sep 4, 2007 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Thanks for the info. sdtribefan!
Some at LGT were also wondering why Miller wasn't called up, and some did mention that Miller's underlying peripherals weren't that good, as you mentioned.
Still, it's a bit surprising Miller wasn't called up; Miller has more experience than guys like Mastny, Lewis, and Mujica; while Miller may not be quite as good as he has been in the past, Mastny hasn't been all that great of late either, and his stuff is only marginally better than Miller's. I would think that Miller could help some, plus the Indians could see whether he would be a viable bullpen option for October (by using that "loophole" the Angels used in 2002 for K-Rod.) So, it's still a bit surprising he wasn't at least called up, especially since Koplove has been anything but impressive both times he's been called to the Majors to this point.
A little surprised about Choo as well; Nixon has been better playing sporadically, but Choo's bat probably could be utilized more, plus the fact that Choo's speed could be useful. However, with both Gutz and Francisco up here, along with Lofton, it's likely Choo wouldn't get much playing time, so I could see more why they made this decision, though it might not have been a bad idea to reward Choo for returning from his injury and possibly getting into some games.
As for Lara, Lara is a bit of a surprise with his erratic season (some good points, but also with some inconsistencies,) but adding a LH reliever does provide depth, and Lara had shown in the past (SSS understood) the ability to get ML hitters out, so I can see why they called him up.
As for Mujica, I could see him possibly being added to that postseason roster if he pitches as well as he did the last time he was up - for the first time he's been in the Majors, Mujica looked more dominant; if he can perform well during this month, I would think the Indians would have to be tempted to take his arm over Mastny's, as Mujica's stuff is better and can better be able to strike out a batter than Mastny's stuff can.
Therefore, I wouldn't be surprised if Mujica is used a little more in closer situations than just blowouts, as I think the Indians could use one more reliable relief arm in that bullpen: Betancourt, Perez, and Borowski are locks, with Lewis not being far from being a lock himself. Fultz probably will get on as another LH, especially with his experience, so that's 5. It's likely a 6th reliever will be added, but between Mastny and Mujica, if Mujica shows more of what he did the last time he was up here, I'd be more inclined to take him than I would Mastny, as Mastny has really been inconsistent over the last few months (though, granted, Wedge hasn't used him all that much over the past few months, but when Wedge did use him regularly a few months ago, it was a crapshoot with Mastny, and mostly, it didn't lead to good results, so I think Mujica has a legitimate shot to unseat him for that 6th and final spot among regular relievers in the postseason bullpen.)
Just my 2 cents.
Again, thanks for the info. - greatly appreciated! :-)
Take care and have a great day!

I can only see two reasons for Lara
I could be way off base but I think Choo and Miller might still be somewhat injured. There was an article on Cleveland fan that said Choo's injury is probably chronic. I also expect Dellucci back next week which would put Choo further down the list. In any event, Miller and Choo really didn't perform in August/September and Marte did. Like you, I am not a big Marte booster but he has shown me something lately and I am willing to give him a shot next year.
BTW, I guess we can forget McBride's promotion to Kinston since he's already at Akron.
by sdtribefan on Sep 5, 2007 12:57 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
My thoughts!
Good point about Lara - like I mentioned, he adds another arm, and a LH arm at that, so I can see why he was added (though he didn't fare well in Anaheim tonight, though none of the relievers did, nor did Byrd for that matter; Jensen was the best of the four, with Fultz allowing his IR to score.)
Mujica didn't help his cause either, but Mastny is so inconsistent, and Mujica's stuff is considerably better, that I'd think Mujica would have more leeway in the strike zone, provided Mujica can command it a bit better. However, whether Mujica can convince the Indians he is the better choice after some outings the rest of this month is probably unlikely, though not impossible.
I had heard before that Choo's elbow injury was chronic; however, to my pleasant surprise, I did see him play some OF, so his elbow must have improved somewhat and/or they have figured out a treatment program to manage the injury if it is chronic, enough so to allow him to play the OF.
As for Miller, his AA playoff performance on Wednesday was not good, but his command was obviously way off, especially since he had little trouble with AAA hitters lately, so I'll wait and see how he responds, especially since it had been several days since his last relief appearance (4 or 5 I believe, which could partly explain his total lack of command against AA hitters.)
Marte definitely finished on a hot, consistent note, which was good to see. Now, can he be close to that consistent at the ML level? We will likely find out next year, one way or the other, but if he doesn't prove it next year, he could be forced out of the Indians' plans, especially since you'll likely have 3B Wes Hodges and 3B/1B Beau Mills at Akron, along with former 3B/now 1B Matt Whitney; Marte is definitely running out of time and losing his one advantage of youth on his side to prove to the Indians that he is as good as many experts thought he would be. Hopefully, he can live up to those expectations.
Regarding McBride, yes, I guess he "exceeded" our expectations or wishes, didn't he? :-)
Just my 2 cents.
BTW, thanks for the informative article in the Akron Beacon Journal regarding Marte and company - greatly appreciated! :-)
Take care and have a great day!

Some Random Observations
LaPorta hit another Hr (that's 6 in the last 10 games) as he went 1 for 4. He's now got 10 Hr's and 27 Rbi in 88 AB's while sporting a hefty 1.142 OPS. Nice!
Travis Snider hit his 16th Hr. Although he's got a bit too many K's (129 in 457 Ab's), remember he is hitting for a good average (.313) and he is only 19.
Couple of guys who are progressing nicely with good OPS's had good days:
Tyler Flowers had a big day going 4 for 4 with 2 Hr's. He played behind the plate today. He's hitting .298 and has an impressive 34 doubles along with 12 Hr's
James Skelton has hit 2 Hr's the last couple of games. He's an athletic catcher who has swiped 18 bases and is hitting .309 on the year. Got a good eye too 55BB/53K's.
In Advanced Single A:
Justin Maxwell hit a bomb and he now has 27 on the year between Hagerstown and Potomac. He also has 35 SB's and a .281 average. However, he does have
122 K's and he is almost 24. Hard to ignore the power/speed combo though.
Eric Young Jr. didn't actually steal a base today (got 73 on the year) but did hit a homerun. Looks like he may have a little pop in his bat as he's got 29 doubles and 11 triples to go along with 8 homers. He has had a very good year in Modesto and really appears he'd potentially make a good leadoff hitter in possibly 2009 for Colorado.
David Freese picked up a couple more RBI to push his total to 96 to go along with 17 Hr and 31 2b. He is 24 but it's only his first full year in the minor's. He appears to be a polished hitter w/o any significant slumps through the year. Also, his average and OPS go up pretty dramatically when their are runners on, and even more so when they're in scoring position.
In Double A:
Although I don't expect much out of him, Garrett Guzman is on quite a streak! He went 4 for 4 yesterday and today he only manages a 5 for 5. He also hit a homerun and drove in 6. He's hitting .312 on the year. An interesting tidbit is that John pegged him to hit for average as can be read in an article he wrote for ESPN back in 2002. He does sport a .287 minor league average.
http://espn.go.com/mlb/hotstove2002/twinsminors.html
Aaron Cunningham hit another homerun and now has 16 on the year in 3 stops. He's hit for a good average this year (.308) with 31 doubles and 10 triples. Plus, he's got 28 swipes. I'd like to know why the White Sox felt so charitable to the Diamondbacks. First Chris Young and now possibly another wonderful OF.
Allen Craig has now played 7 games for Arkansas and has hit 2 homeruns the last two (3 overall). He posted nice numbers in A+ ball and St. Louis is hoping he continues as they would like to think he's their 3b of the future.
Johnny Cueto pitched a nice game: 7 IP 8 K's 0 BB's and 2 ER. I bet alot of people including myself are somewhat surprised by his demotion. However, I think that it was done for a couple reasons. First, the Lookouts were neck and neck for the division and they thought it may come down to the last game of the season. However, they failed because Huntsville wrapped it up yesterday. I think the Reds wanted Cueto to get some playoff type-expecience. Secondly, I think Louisville may have needed the roster space as Belisle is back and Homer Bailey may be coming back there.
Reid Brignac ended his AA season with a 2 for 6 performance and a SB. I know many people are down on the guy after what he did last year, but I don't think he had a negative year. First, he improved his K/BB ratios. Second, he maintained his power and speed numbers quite well throughout a whole season in AA while only 21. Think about what his numbers might have been if he didn't have such an abysmal May and not much better June.
In Triple A:
Justin Ruggiano hit his 20th homerun this year. He's got 26 sb's as well and is hitting .306 but his 151 K's are scary. He'll get a shot at making the major league club next year, but I don't like his chances for any regular time. Upton, Young and Crawford will put a damper on many future prospects.
Andy LaRoche was called up by the Dodgers yesterday and should get some significant time at 3b with Nomar hurting and Hillenbrand not contributing much. He went 0 for 2 yesterday and 1 for 5 today with a 2b and 2 rbi. If he's healthy, I think he's very capable of an offensive explosion as his July numbers in Vegas were incredible - .411 avg w/ 12 Hr's and 28 Rbi in 90 AB's.
Andrew Bailey pitched a wonderful game in his first start in AAA. He went 8 innings striking out 4 while just giving up 3 hits, 1 walk and 1 earned run. If he can continue his improvement upon his command, he can likely help the big club next year and join the long list of solid farm raised Oakland pitchers.
Chris Lambert pitched a great game in first outing as a member of the Detroit organization. In 6 shutout innings, he struck out 10 while giving up 1 hit and walking 2. He was at one time a top ten prospect in St. Louis but had struggled much over the last 2 years +. Hopefully a change of scenery will do him good and get his career back on the right path.
