State of Baseball

The "Barry debate" for me is a difficult one, because I think it's a much bigger issue than just "Should we cheer or boo Barry Bonds for his accomplishments?"

To me, this is what baseball should be about:

I must admit, I'm quite disillusioned by major league baseball today. Sure, cheating has always been part of baseball... stealing signs, scuffing balls, greenies, groupies, etc, etc. But wasn't there once a little integrity, honor, respect? Maybe the media just looked the other way in the old days, but all I see today is people in pursuit of cold hard cash, and complaining when they don't get enough of it thrown at them.

It just seems to me they've managed to take a kid's game and allow it to be warped into a business where only the greedy prosper. I've got a daughter who is almost two, another kid on the way, and I have no idea how I'll talk to them about baseball, in particular people like Bonds. A widely acknowledged miserable SOB who has been accused of cheating by taking steroids, accused of cheating on his taxes, accused of cheating on his wife, but has an incredible gift for playing a game, and is rewarded to the tune of $20 million a year to do so. Not to mention the money over and above that from licensing deals, as he felt he could make more money through independent licensing deals, instead of through the MLBPA. "Kids, he was a great player, one of the best to ever play the game. But don't be like him. Well, unless you want fame and fortune, then we may have some tough decisions ahead of us. Just remember, if anyone asks, this is flaxseed oil."

But the point of this ramble isn't Barry Lamar Bonds. It's about baseball, a game that I love to play, love to watch. Is there anything quite like the bright green grass in the outfield on a gorgeous summer day? The sights, sounds and smells of a friendly ballpark? I love the nuances of the game, as a shortstop plays a touch deeper in the hole with a runner on first, to increase his range knowing his throw will go to second base. The chess game between pitcher and catcher against batter. The third base coach flashing some crazy hand signals across the diamond. The runner at first stretching his lead an inch more, two inches more, as that could be the difference between safe and out as he digs his feet in and races for second. The umpire's hand punching the air to signal a called strike three. A stunned batter, staring down at the plate wondering how the heck he could let that pitch go by without swinging.

Maybe I'm too cynical. Maybe I'm too idealistic. I dunno. I know that I don't watch as much baseball as I used to. I don't expect it to change, I realize baseball is a business, first and foremost. First and only, really. I don't expect a resolution, I don't expect people to agree, just wanted to vent some frustration. And thus I endeth my ramble.

How do you feel about baseball today?
Love it, I don't care an iota about what motivates players or what they put in their body.

Yeah, some of the stuff bugs me, but it's baseball, I still love it.

I'm troubled, but like to think the powers that be will somehow get things back on track.

regarding option 3 in the poll
i don't think there's anybody that i would trust less than the current MLB "powers that be" to fix the problems with baseball today. they seem totally uninterested in doing that, preferring to focus on complaining about said problems in an attempt to get people to give them more money.

Agreed
Trusting the powers that MLB to clean up steroids is like trusting Big Oil and General Motors to lead us into a cleaner & more energy efficient tomorrow.

Kids, Money, and Baseball
I have 3 kids, oldest is 8. She watches sports news and wonders why everyone is so angry at Bonds, if he's such a good player. I tell her it's like anything else in life. Some people are nice, some people cheat, some people care about others and some people only look out for themselves. Surround yourself with the kind of people you want to be like and you'll be happier.

I firmly believe that people who are only motivated by money tend to not be very successful. Hard work, determination, and all the things it takes to cultivate your talent regardless of vocation aren't generally inspired by money. Money may be A motivator, but not THE motivator. For some maybe that is true, but I think that for most it is not.

I love watching baseball. "The Powers that be" can't ever do anything to mess that up. I was a little less interested and frustrated when my kids were younger too. Then I went outside with my 6 year old and started having a catch in the yard, or on the beach, and realized that I couldn't care less that the all-star game ended in a tie, or that they are squeezing the little guy out of the park, or that the all time hr king cheated and is a jerk.

To me baseball is about those moments with my Dad and my kids, playing catch, cheering for our team and telling stories. It's about spending the day at the ballpark a few times a season with them. The players themselves aren't nearly as important to me.

Oh, come off it
There are not more problems in baseball now, there is simply about 50 gazillion times more media coverage, so we know about every piece of shit little thing that happens, whereas 50 years ago no one talked about the dirt.  Most of those cute Rockwell paintings were done before baseball was integrated, and most of America was just sticking their heads in the sand.

State of Baseball
Is the same as the state of virtually every other sport.

Look at track and field, cycling, swimming, etc.  There is cheating on a mega scale going on in all of these sports.

People will do ANYTHING for fame and/or money.  Seems to part of the human genetic code.

Sad, but true.

Human Nature
Most people are motivated by self interest most of the time.  That's why people cheat, that's why communism was, and is, an abject failure, that's why our government has no long-run paradigm, etc.  Almost nothing in life is all good or all bad.  Self interest spurs creation of amazing inventions and it leads to Enron.
