Twins Revised Top 10

I didn't realize that the revised Top 10s were supposed to go in their own diary. Here is my Top 10 (or 12), and if you would like to see the full Top 50, please go to www.SethSpeaks.net. Thanks,

Star-divide

I just updated my Twins Top 50 list... here are my thoughts as of today:

1.) Kevin Slowey - RHP - With Garza over 50 innings, Slowey moves up one spot to the top. Showed that he has a lot to learn, but he's as smart as it gets and will be just fine.
2.) Alexi Casilla - 2B/SS - He likely won't be eligible for this list since he came up and is getting everyday 2B duties for the Twins and should the rest of the year. I would predict average, on base skills and stolen base speed. He also has enough pop to the gaps for some extra base hits.
3.) Anthony Swarzak - RHP - heading into the season, he was a top 5 Twins prospect. Then came the drug suspension. Now he's back and really throwing well at AA.
4.) Trevor Plouffe - SS - The pleasant surprise of the year, Plouffe is really playing well offensively and defensively for New Britain (AA). After getting off to very slow years the last two seasons, I thought another year in the FSL would be helpful, but he has adapted to the Eastern League very well!
5.) Brian Duensing - LHP - In 2006, Duensing moved from Low A to High A to AA, and I didn't really always understand why they were pushing him. He started this season in AA and soon moved up to AA where he is now 9-2 with a 2.77 ERA in 81+ innings.
6.) Jeff Manship - RHP - The Twins 14th round pick in 2006 out of Notre Dame, I can't explain why the Twins left Manship in Low A Beloit for the whole first half of the season. Despite struggling a little in his last start at Ft. Myers, he has dominated there as well.
7.) Tyler Robertson - LHP - 19 year old was the Twins 3rd round pick in 2006. He began the season in Extended Spring Training, but shortly before the draft, he was brought up to Low A. He has been tremendous.
8.) Oswaldo Sosa - RHP - The ground ball pitcher was added to the Twins 40 man roster last year after putting up great numbers between Low A and Hi A. He began this year with Ft. Myers again and despit a very mediocre record, posted a great ERA. He moved up to AA where he has continued to be very good!
9.) Glen Perkins - LHP - In terms of innings  pitched, he is under the 50 mark, but since he was in the bullpen, I am not sure if he has enough time on the active roster to no longer be a rookie in 2008. He actually falls from this list a little bit, primarily because of the arm injury. It probably would not have moved him down had he come back in a timely manner. However, he has been out longer than expected.
10.) Chris Parmelee - 1B/OF - Twins 1st pick in 2006 out of high school, Parmelee does have 13 homers and plenty of RBI. He has a low average, but has shown a good eye. He power potential makes him a big-time prospect.

Since Alexi Casilla and Glen Perkins may not really be eligible for this, I will include #11 and #12.

11.) Alex Burnett - RHP - Just turned 20 and pitching very well at Low A. He has always pitched well at each level despite being young for that level.
12.) Danny Valencia - 3B - Twins 19th round pick in 2006, Valencia was excellent offensively and defensively at Beloit, and he (along with Brian Dinkelman - #14) helped spark a dormant Ft. Myers Miracle offense when he was promoted.

Any questions or comments, please let me know.

what has happened
to jay rainville?  i know he blew his arm out, but his surgery went well and he's back pitching after a year off.  he was always rated among their top prospects prior to his arm trouble.  has he lost his stuff?  if not, why is he off the radar now?

Rainville
He had surgery on a nerve in his shoulder, from what I understand. He missed all of 2006. To me, 2007 has been about getting his stuff back. I have heard that his velocity has increased over the course of the year. Because of the Twins great pitching depth, they are able to be patient with him as he is coming back. I would think that 2008 will be a big year for him, probably at AA New Britain. I think I had him somewhere around 16-18 this time around.

yeah
he didn't "blow his arm out", it was one of those nerve things.  although those cases do seem to wind up leading to more arm surgery down the line at least 50% of the time (josh johnson, etc.)

Must Be...
The .230 BAA, 78 K's in 57 IP, less hits than innings pitched, and the solid walk rate.
Sickels for President.

Relief Pitcher
In reality, I think I probably ranked him too high earlier. As good as I think his stuff is and can be, he is a relief pitcher. It's just hard for me to rank a guy whose potential is throwing 60-80 innings ahead of a guy who could start and throw 150-220 innings. That said, I still believe he can be dominant in relief pitcher.

Cup of Coffee
I don't think Sosa will this year. Duensing could. If Boof Bonser struggles, Duensing could just as easily get called up as Slowey since the Twins have spots open on their 40 man roster.

I think September Call-Ups will be:
Garrett Jones, Kevin Slowey, Matt Tolbert, Chris Heintz (if healthy), possibly Denard Span. And I would also put money on Tommy Watkins getting a call-up.

good info, thanks
i have the Twins in my strat league.  and the way it works is you draft a team, and you get all the NEW call-ups for that year...anyone who has never had an IP or AB in a previous season.  Having already gotten Jones and Slowey(and traded slowey), i wondered who else was in line for a call-up.

thanks again for the info.

paul kelly
Where does he rank? Jonathan Mayo said he was the top SS prospect in the AL Central before the season...which I thought was kind of funny, but anyways.

oh he's dropped like a rock
he tore his knee up and never recoved.  Still young at 21 but Plouff has passed him.

Kelly
He had actaully passed by Plouffe last year, but then the knee injury about midseason last year happened and he still hasn't come back. He played in two rehab games with the Twins GCL team.
