September Callups?

With MLB rosters expanding on September 1st and teams calling up players for the expansion as soon as today or tomorrow, does anyone have an idea of which players on the various team will be called up? Any possible surprises? Elite Prospects?

Also, are the callups limited to the 40-man roster?

Yankees/ Answer

Only people on the 40 can be called up, but the player can be added to the 40.

The definites are Wil Nieves, Ian Kennedy Alberto Gonzalez, Kevin Thompson, Jeff Karstens, and Sean Henn, and Villone and Mientkiewicz's activation.

Bronson Sardinha, Jose Veras, and Jim Brower are very likely to be DFAed.

Other pitching options are TJ Beam, Matt DeSalvo, and Chase Wright.

I thought
Brower already was?

Demoted, not DFAed
Also, I just read that they won't call up a third catcher, so Sardinha is likely saved.

definites?
UPDATE, 12:02 p.m.: Joe Torre said today that the Yankees would probably not call up a third catcher on Saturday. Apparently Wil Nieves is not worth a spot on the 40-man roster.

No Britton?
If he doesn't get called up, his agent should push for a trade this winter.

Evan Longoria
You realize that prospect lists have a time horizon of like 5-10 years, not 5-10 days, right?

anybody heard...
anything on Jay Bruce. IMO, he was held off the AFL roster for a reason.

Also, Carlos Gonzalez is on the D'Backs 40-Man roster and was just promoted to AA and has been on fire the week he's been there.

Evan
will not get called up.  He's going to the AFL for a week or 2 in October then he's off to Taiwan to play for Team USA.  He will not get called up.

I've heard that too
but still think he may get a few AB's in Tampa - especially if Durham makes a quick exit from the playoffs (assuming they win the division.)

Brewers
Likely to call up Tony Gwynn Jr, Carlos Villanueva and possibly Zach Jackson.

Rangers
Edinson Volquez will start Saturday, and AJ Murray, Victor Diaz, Kevin Mahar, Freddy Guzman, and a 3rd catcher (Chris Stewart or G. Quiroz) are all possibilities.  Volquez is obviously the most interesting here.  He's been tearing up AAA lately and all his coaches rave about his maturation this year on and off the field.

Lillbridge and Brandon Jones
I would like to see them get a few AB's.  Lillibridge can spell Escobar, allowing him to play 2nd when Johnson doesn't play.  I hate Chris Woodward, the guy is terrible.

Braves' bench
The Braves might have the worst bench in the history of baseball.

Woodward, Corky Miller, and now Pete Orr.  Whoa.

mets
Pelfrey,Humber,Callazo,Smith, then possibly Muniz

by Maine Man on Aug 30, 2007 4:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I doubt Smith
He's been on the DL, and even before then didn't pitch much. I hope the Mets didn't ruin him this year by throwing him as much as they did.

Well
According to mets.com one of the newest updates says the Mets still plan to call up Smith when the rosters expand.

They didn't Ruin him, reports from new orleans before he went down were that his stuff was back to normal, he's what the mets are missing right now.

Gomez...
If he can run and play D he has to come up, even if it's just to pinch run or serve as a defensive replacement. Marlon Anderson shouldn't be in the OF ever, but he's especially brutal in late innings of close games, like today. The way the pen is pitching these days an OF of Chavez-Beltran-Gomez could be a huge asset...

by MetfanBren on Aug 30, 2007 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What about Milledge
I thought he was suppost to be the next superstar there.  He also has 12 K's in his last 20 AB's.

by Bravesin07 on Aug 30, 2007 11:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Defense...
Milledge starts because of his bat, but Gomez is a better baserunner and defender. He's a lot better than Sean Green of course, but a tick below Gomez IMO...

by MetfanBren on Aug 30, 2007 11:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I donno about Milledge
He's looked very bad lately on Curves, Sliders, and Changeups.  Reminds me a lot of Rondell White and Reggie Sanders, two dead red fastball hitters.  John might be right on all three of the mets touted outfielders failing.  They could be the next generation players that failed for the Mets.

by Bravesin07 on Aug 30, 2007 11:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Funny..
When exactly did John say all three of them would fail, or are we just pulling things out of our arse again?

by MetfanBren on Aug 31, 2007 9:38 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He said that in the prospect Q&A
He said that all three have more than a 50% chance of failing.

by Bravesin07 on Aug 31, 2007 9:47 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You mean this?
"In my more depressing moments I think all three of them have a better-than-even chance of failing. I really don't like the way the Mets handle players with strike zone judgment questions."

I would assume that the "most depressing moment," reference means he was talking in terms of a worst case scenario, but you can spin it however you want...

by MetfanBren on Aug 31, 2007 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think it's very possible...
that all 3 fail.  If I were you (a Met fan), I'd be happy if even one becomes what they have been hyped up to be.  That isn't saying they can't still be good ball players but just that they wont be the annual All-Star, potential HoF players so many seem to think they will be.

hoffpauir
jarrett hoffpauir should get called up for the cardinals.  with the miguel cairo signing i thought he might get screwed, but with rolen going down the cardinals currently have no back up infielders.  i think they will call up at least 2 infielders now, and hoffpauir is by far the most deserving.

Red Sox.
Jon Lester

I heard Clay Buchholz will pitch start Saturday September 1st.

Jacoby Ellsbury

I wouldnt be surprised if Brandon Moss, George Kottaras,Chris Carter, Jed Lowrie, Devern Hansack, and Craig Hansen(DL) also saw some time with the big club.

Royce Clayton, Brendan Donnelly (DL)Junior Spivey?

Indians!
Hello everyone,

Of the guys on the 40-man roster who will probably be called up:

3B Andy Marte
OF Ben Francisco
OF Shin-Soo Choo

LHP Cliff Lee
LHP Jeremy Sowers
RHP Matt Miller
RHP Edward Mujica
RHP Mike Koplove (just for added bullpen depth.)
LHP Juan Lara (just for added bullpen depth.)

Those on the 40-man who are questionable to be called up:

INF Joe Inglett - I think he could be a probable, but Wedge said that the call-ups will be limited this year and only those who can directly help.  While Inglett has shown a decent bat in the past, his defense is not a strong suit, and the Indians already have several INFers on the rosters, so I'll consider Inglett a "maybe" rather than a "probable."
LHP John Koronka - He could probably provide another bullpen arm as a long-man option, and probably just to see what they have in him, as they picked him up on waivers, but he's probably less likely than Inglett, being that the Indians have MANY pitching options, both on and off the 40-man roster.

Those NOT on the 40-man, but probably would have solid to good chances of seeing time in September:

RHP Adam Miller - 4/5 bullpen outings have been strong since he returned from his last injury.
RHP Scott Elarton - he's been quite good since coming back to the Indians and out of the bullpen, and does offer ML experience.
LHP Jason Stanford - he was more-less solid in a recent ML callup, and could serve as an experienced long-man out of the bullpen if need be.

1B Ryan Mulhern - he's had a solid to very solid year, and could provide a nice RH power option off the bench, something the Indians don't have much of.
SS Mike Rouse - was up for most of the year as a solid defensive back-up and could be called upon again to serve in that role, especially late in games, or to rest one of the starters.
C Mike Rose - was considered the Indians' 3rd catcher in ST, and probably, could be called up to give Martinez and Shoppach some extra time off to make sure they stay fresh.

Those NOT on the 40-man and have SOME chance of being called up:

RHP Bubbie Buzachero - more like Tom Mastny, though supposedly has a little better stuff than Mastny, but without any ML experience.  Being that Manager Wedge hasn't used Mastny much lately, I'm guessing Buzachero either won't be called up, or if he is, won't be used much outside of maybe an appearance or two to get him acquainted with the Majors.
RHP Sean Smith - has had a decent year, but like Buzachero, has no ML experience; would probably be able to fit that long-man, spot starter role, but with others ahead of him, again, he'd either wouldn't be called up, or if he was, probably wouldn't get more than 1-2 appearances at most just to get him acclimated to the Majors.

The likeliest call-ups will probably be from the 40-man "probably" chance list, but I could see guys like Adam Miller, Scott Elarton, and Ryan Mulhern, especially, being added to the 40-man in place of guys like Michael Aubrey, Juan Lara, Mike Koplove, J.D. Martin, Brian Slocum, Joe Inglett, and/or Brad Snyder.

Take care and have a great day!

The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.

Oakland
I'm guessing Barton, Meyer and Braden (although the latter two have both been up earlier this year, Braden pitched in something like 13 games at the MLB level).  Not exactly anything to get your heart pumping.

others that might get a chance
most are not on the 40 man roster so thats an issue. also SAC will be in the playoffs so they wont be called up right away

Petit
Blasi
Robertson
Gray
Ziegler
