Mets trade for Jeff Conine

According to an article I saw on another website, the Mets have obtained Conine for minor leaguers Jose Castro and Sean Henry.  The Mets definitely needed another bat to face lefties with Easley done for the year, but it appears the Mets dealt more for Conine than they did for Luis Castillo.  Jose Castro is undersized, but he is hitting for a high average in the Florida State League at age 20 and does not K that much.  Sean Henry was a sleeper who really came on this year and showed a lot of upside.  While I know the Mets are deep with OF prospects I just think that if Henry could replicate his success at AA next year he would have garnered a lot more in return and it was not like Conine was the only righty bat on the market

Mets fan?
The Mets had to make a late move to get a capable hitter. The price meets the demand. Best case for both the players the Reds got is a backup infielder and a reserve OF. It was a fine move for both team as long as Conine does what he's advertised to be which is a hard-nosed, experienced, multi-positional, winning hitter.

multi-positional...
While Conine has experience all over the field, I'd much rather see him on the bench for the late innings of a close game. It's nice to have a guy you can run out there in an emergency (which they couldn't do with Franco), but I can't imagine the Mets will play him anywhere other than 1B unless the game is completely out of hand.

I can't believe Conine is still in the league, 41 years old, a 17 year career of being a good-not-great-but-consistently-reliable hitter.

He can play
OF too and even played some 3B this year (only in a pinch though).

OF-3B
I know he CAN play there, the question is SHOULD he play there? This year he has one game at 3B (0 at bats) and one game at RF (2 at bats), so it's not like he's had much work there recently. If the game is on the line, I'd be stunned if he's anywhere but at 1B or on the bench. But it's nice to have the flexibility to throw him in LF for the last couple innings of a blowout.

Conine
I think, right now, Conine is going to come in as the righty 1st base platoon while Delgado is still nursing his knee (I wouldn't be surprised to see a retroactive 15 day DL in the next day or so).  After that, I think he becomes the #1 righty off the bench.  He's the new Julio Franco, don't you know?
