Wily Mo Pena Traded

To the Washington Nationals - just reported live by the Red Sox announcers.  I can't find any details.

Also, they said that Ellsbury is going to be called up today.

Hmm.
Seems like it's probably a decent list of prospects if they gave up Wily Mo + Cash...

i disagree
prospect will be crap......they couldn't wait to unload pena to get the roster space, especially with kietly due a call-up......they've been trying to move him for months

Well
I agree except for the cash part.  I guess it depends on how much cash.

Also, I'm not saying they are going to give them back anything spectacular.  Just someone who might reach the bigs one day...

I tend to agree with you
It'll end up being a 22-year old RHRP pitching in Short Season or something along those lines

by NFA Brian on Aug 17, 2007 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

disagree totally
Pena doesn't make much and there is only 1.5 months left + Boston is paying some. They could have just cut him. So obviously it will be someone they like.

Darn...
... when I saw this I was really hoping to hear that it was for Monroe from the Tigers.

Monroe is terrible

Bowden is one step closer
to having a team full of former Cincinnati Reds.

Austin Kearns
Felipe Lopez
Dmitri Young
D'angelo Jimenez
Wily Mo Pena

Just give it time. I feel a Sean Casey signing soon. Maybe even Reggie Sanders.

Don't forget
Jose Guillen was there. Dmitri Young. Ryan Wagner is on the DL. And Barry Larkin and Jose Rijo both work in management for them

Nats
I'd love to see WMP get some regular playing time, he's still only 25 years old and obviously has always had some pop in his bat. I can't say I'm surprised he didn't fare well as a 4th outfielder in Boston, how many power hitters do well in a part-time role?

Any Nats fans that can weigh in on what his role will be? Still a 4th OF? Or could they do Pena/Church/Kearns and have Logan/Langerhans as reserves?

That's the question
Austin Kearns left last night's game with a cramp in his hamstring. The short term answer might be Church, Logan, and Pena. Longer term is a bigger question. Kearns seems the only certainty. I could easily see Pena and Kearns at the corners with Church/Logan in some sort of CF platoon once Kearns is healthy

from Bill Ladson at MLB.com
With the addition of Pena, the Nationals will move Ryan Church from left field to center, while Pena will play left. Pena will most likely bat cleanup or fifth, in order to protect Ryan Zimmerman or Dmitri Young.

Sweet
Go figure, I actually have a reason to look at a Nats box score now. Thanks for the post.

Terry Ryan is asleep at the wheel
The Twins have been pathetic offensively since the break; they black holes for hitters in LF, DH, and 3B and all these decent or better guys who could likely have been had for pennies on the dollar are just flying through waivers.

WMP got through waivers.

Sammy Sosa got through waivers, even though he's making close to the minimum bcause of the minor league deal, and he's hitting 318/.413/.568 vs LHP.

Where did Russell Branyan end up?

Some of these GM's really suck pretty bad at the freely or cheaply available talent thing.

yeah, i don't get the twins.
ryan and the twins have a preternatural ability to develop arms and snag pitchers from other teams, but he appears to actively hate offense.  is it just loyalty to the pitchers?  he would consider it rude to force them to watch runs being scored, when they've dedicated their entire careers to the suppression of offense?

You're forgetting
Tony Batista, Juan Castro, Rondell White.

TR signed all of them.

I won't get married until the Red Sox win the World Series. AGAIN!!

Don't leave out Ramon Ortiz and Sid Ponson
He signed them as well. Wasted about $4 million on them too.

why not include Silva?
he was a whipping boy just as much as those two.

Oh, yeah, because Silva earned his money PLUS their money. :)))
