Moustakas Signs!

Moustakas Signs

Joe Posnanski of the Kansas City Star just got word that Mike Moustakas signed with the Royals. No word on the terms yet.

With a minute to go, doesn't look like the Orioles will sign Matt Wieters. No word on what's going on with the Cubs and Josh Vitters . . . thought that would have been done earlier this evening.

Just hopefully not an MLB contract...

Good to see every team sign their first round pick. I still hate to see premium talent fall to better teams with deeper pockets, but if Wieters and Moustakas failed to sign it would have been bad for the game, IMO. Teams like Baltimore and KC need to add premium talent to their organization very badly.

YES WE DO!
And the whole draft helped, I believe KC ended up signing 33 draft picks.

WGN
is reporting the Cubs signed Vitters.  So Wieters is the only one unaccounted for.

Vitters....
in the booth with the Cubs television crew.

Admirable move, but the kid was obviously WAY overwhelmed. I have seen much better interviews. (Sorry if this seems harsh, but it was awkward to watch.)

on draft day
didn't jonathan mayo interview him? and he seemed totally unable to put three words together? i have some memory that it was him. (aumont was bad, too, but at least he has the excuse that english isn't his native tongue.) of course, it presumably takes some time to get used to public interviews on national TV.

And Don't Forget
...this is really just a kid. He hasn't even turned 18 yet. It's a big move from HS to nationally broadcast interviews.

Good point.
Very fair statement, but the interview was so awkward I had a hard time watching it.

What a coincidence he "happened to be in the park."

How Can Anyone Support That Team
They could have easily drafted Heyward or one of the prep pitchers and had a deal done at slot.  I just don't understand drafting someone who was asking for $10M all along and then not coming close to terms...

Wow
I spoke too soon...

Jack McGeary
Also signed by the Nationals according to Jim Callis at BA.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Too good to be true.

Nevermind
found it lol... I think the Nationals got a Steal with McGeary

Nice
Interested in hearing how much money it is.

Sucks for the Orioles to be the only team that didn't get their first round pick signed. But everybody knew Wieters was going to be asking for a ridiculious amount.

No big deal for him
he just goes back to school for his Sr. year and gets drafted again next year. Hurts Baltimore a lot more. Opps.

Well...
for his sake, he better hope he has a great year, and stays injury free.

From my perspective, it's a huge risk giving up guaranteed money to go back and potentially break your leg in a homeplate collision (or something of that nature).

by NewKidInTown on Aug 16, 2007 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions

If he broke his leg
he'd be fine. Ligament or muscle tears would be far more substantial.

by Havok1517 on Aug 16, 2007 12:18 AM EDT up reply actions

he'd be 'fine'
yes... but I don't think it helps his draft stock, or his signing bonus ;)

Jonathan Mayo says...
Last minute shopping, folks.

Mike Moustakas has signed with the Royals. Bonus is believed to be $4 million, a nice chunk above slot.

Vitters, perhaps  waiting for that bit of news, is done as well.

Makes Me Think
That Moose knew he was gonna sign the whole time and Boras let him take it to the last second.  Probably not the best way to endear himself to Royal fans but they probably wont remember when he's ready in a few years anyways.

That's what I'm thinkin'...There was no way Moustakas was going to USC.

by doublestix on Aug 16, 2007 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions

The ploy apparently worked...
Too bad Bravesin07 decided to dump on then entire Royals ownership/organization, jumping to conclusions without realizing it was a stall tactic for the agent to get as much as he could from the organization contractually.  The name calling and jumping to conclusions shows the lack of maturity, insight, and knowledge of the business that is baseball and of the sport itself.

It's just time to ignore the ignorant rants of a 17 year old kid who spews at every opportunity whether it's true or not without contributing realistic insight/opinions and then backing them with factual data.

Internet fans love to believe Boras is the devil, but he is still an agent that works for the player and the family, and at the end of the day the latter decides what the decision will be.

Moose and his family played hardball until the end, but they ended up taking the best deal they were offered and IMO they were very wise to do so.
