Price Signs!

8.25 million dollar ML deal.  It's a 6 year deal, but there are bonus clauses that haven't been announced yet.  More details will follow, but I just read it from Marc Lancaster's (beat writer) blog.

Well...
this should put the dominoes in motion for the rest of the guys hopefully.
You realize that prospect lists have a time horizon of like 5-10 years, not 5-10 days, right?

subject
any idea when and where he will start?

by Josh on Aug 15, 2007 5:49 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

My guess
Next year in the FSL.  I'm guessing he won't pitch any more this year, and possibly that it's a 2008 contract.

2008 contract
the major league deal might not start until 2008, but you can't sign draft picks to deals for next year anymore.  every pick that signs now must sign a 2007 contract.

More on the contract:
FoxNews is reporting that he has escalators depending on his major league service time, which can get up around $11.25M if he stays in the majors for the full length of the deal.

This makes me think that it contains a provision which requires the team to start him in the majors (like was Miller had last year, and what McKinnis' other big Rays client, Brazelton, had when he signed).

from espn's article
The Devil Rays plan to send the 21-year-old to Class A Hudson Valley, where he will work out and get acclimated to pro ball -- but likely not pitch this season.

"We're going to be overcautious. We don't have all the information we want [about what shape Price's arm is in after not pitching in a game for the past two months]," said Devil Rays vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman, according to AP.

Lets hope he turns out better than last years #1
pick in Hochevar who BP thinks now will be a 3rd starter at best now.  Reminds me of a Dewon Brazelton so far, though he has some time to turn it around.

Oh come on..
The Royals aren't even letting him throw two of this best pitches.  Let's give him at least another year until we start calling him the next Dewon Brazelton and the many other comps you used.

Looking at Hochevar's...
Junior year at Tennessee, he should have never been put in this situation of being the #1 pick...

104 Hits 154K's is pretty good but, guys who go straight to the majors are usually a LOT better than that.

He's a LOT better prospect than Brazelton was though obviously.

Not at the time
Braz was every bit the prospect Hoch was when he was drafted.

whats the story?
Why are the Royals limiting his pitch selection?

by Godot on Aug 15, 2007 6:07 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They...
don't want him to rely on his slider and sinker and want him to develop his fastball control and his curve

thanks
For the information.
An interesting experiment..

The Royals seem..
to be doing the same thing with most of their better pitching prospects like Daniel Cortes and others

by adschofield on Aug 15, 2007 6:17 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

True
Danny Duffy isn't throwing his slider either, nor are many of their top prospects. Carlos Rosa DOES throw his slider I believe, however.

Hochevar
Doesn't that make a player lose the feel and confidence of certain pitches if he isn't allowed to throw them? Wouldn't that make his slider worse or can you just jump right back on the horse and have it be a plus pitch after not throwing it for a while?  I remember watching Hochevar at Tennessee and thinking to myself that his stuff was absolute filth and that he'd be a STUD pitching prospect when he was finally drafted and signed.  I was hoping upon hope that the Dodgers inked him up but we all know what happened there.  Still, I have high hopes for Hochevar remaining

Hochevar..
still practices with his slider, he just can't use it in a game.

by adschofield on Aug 15, 2007 11:07 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He
Uses his slider in bullpen sessions...just not in games.
