confused about what happens if he does need TJ. does he lose option years?

by PooNani on Aug 15, 2007 4:07 PM EDT reply actions

If he has TJ
Presumably they would put him on the 60-day DL for the entire year, so it wouldn't use up an option (because he was on the major league roster all year) and it wouldn't accelerate his arbitration clock.

That deal seems too monstrous to me.  It's partially fallout from the Cubs overpaying Szamardija (or however you spell it) last year.  Of course, Jeff would have gotten big money in the NFL, while Brackman probably wouldn't even be drafted in the NBA and would have a Mark Hendrickson career at best.

Re:
What you said.

If people had a problem with the Porcello contract, I would love to see what they think of this albatross.

by CW @ Minor League Ball on Aug 15, 2007 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions

its less than porcello
its 4 years 4.5 million, porcello's was 4 years 7.285 million.

the difference is that the 3 option years at the end would total 9 million, while porcello's 2 option years total almost 3 million

by PooNani on Aug 15, 2007 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions

well, sure, it's less
the main difference is that porcello is actually good at pitching

by wily mo on Aug 15, 2007 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes,...
but does anyone actually believe he'll turn down that option and play basketball.

by adschofield on Aug 15, 2007 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Also
Deferred money too.  Really it is about a $3.7 deal.  Don't believe the hype.

by BlueEyesAustin on Aug 15, 2007 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Seriously?
That's insane to give him a MLB contract, especially if he needs TJ.

by doublestix on Aug 15, 2007 4:14 PM EDT reply actions

can we assume
the yanks have had access to MRI's to see if he needed TJS before this signing or not?

by nyybaseball99 on Aug 15, 2007 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

apparently we cant
reports have him in alabama right now to see Dr. Andrews

by nyybaseball99 on Aug 15, 2007 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow.
I hope the yankees know what they are doing?

To Quote the late great Mr. Rizzuto
Holy Cow!  Holy Cow thats alot of money to give to a youngster with arm troubles!  Imagine what David Price has to be thinking right now?  David starts looking at his wallet and wonders - If Ricky gets 7mil then Andy gets 13mil, what the hell am I worth?  Then David smiles and says, yup - got to be 15 mil?

This is getting out of hand...
Why, oh way, does the MLB even have a draft? This is getting ridiculous.

by adschofield on Aug 15, 2007 4:32 PM EDT reply actions

+1
Something has to be done about the draft.

Apparentely Aumont
has a deal in place... theres a link in the "Giants sign LHP Madison Bumgarner" thread... Im to lazy to repost it here but its there if you want to check it out

by tbach81 on Aug 15, 2007 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Aumont
All the story in the link mentioned above says is that Bavasi is optimistic about the chances of Aumont signing.  Bavasi was also optimistic about the chances of the HoRam (2007 era over 7) for Soriano deal working out well for the Mariners.

by dodgem on Aug 15, 2007 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions

haha
I like that one.

On the other hand I was pretty hard on ole DumDum (Thats what we call him 'round these part) for the Vidro for Snelling/Fruto deal and that one hasnt killed us. Vidro has been an okay part of a good lineup.

Ramirez for Soriano was stupid though and, before anybody say it...that is NOT hindsight talking.

Overall good draft for Yankees
I'm pretty sure their top 10 picks have deals in place which means that Brackman, Austin Romine, Brad Suttle, Chase Weems, and Carmen Angelini have all signed.

It'll still be tough to beat last year's draft...

by hallofamer2000 on Aug 15, 2007 5:31 PM EDT reply actions

last years draft
obviously already paying huge dividends now, but jeez, think of the potential

kennedy, joba, mcallister, betances, melancon...all with serious impact potential

by nyybaseball99 on Aug 15, 2007 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions

In the perfect world...
In the perfect world they have 3/5th of their future rotation, a closer, and a reliever from that draft. (Betances/McAllister/Kennedy, Melancon, David Robertson)

by hallofamer2000 on Aug 15, 2007 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions

What were they thinking!!!???
For what they are spending on unproven kids this year and last year they could have paid for Zito for a whole year!

by emac2 on Aug 15, 2007 5:56 PM EDT reply actions

Only mistake of the Yankees' draft.
Their other moves are superb signability issues.  This is, like, the opposite of signability.  Brackman is a HUGE risk, and they're shelling out record money for him.

Seriously, though, mad props to the FO for getting Angelini, Suttle, and company.  That's a nice draft, Brackman aside.

First MLB Contract?
I seem to remember hearing that the Yanks had never given a MLB contract to a draft pick before.  Is that the case?

by Bowser on Aug 15, 2007 9:07 PM EDT reply actions

well
Wily Mo???

by cmaff05 on Aug 15, 2007 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

what?
i wasn't a draft pick, i was an international free agent.

And it
ruined your promising career :(

by Tyler on Aug 15, 2007 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions

no
his suckiness ruined his promising career

by hallofamer2000 on Aug 15, 2007 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Well
being a bench player in the big leagues at 21 instead of playing everyday certainly didn't help him learn to hit a breaking ball.  Maybe he doesn't develop, but 500 more at bats at 21/22 could have certainly helped instead of sitting on the bench.
