Porcello to sign

Jon Heyman, at SI.com, is reporting that Porcello will break Beckett's record for signing bonus. Looks like the Tigers are going to give him a $7.3M bonus.

Here is the link: Tigers sign Porcello

From the article:
"Porcello, a right-hander from Seton Hall Prep in West Orange, N.J., has been compared by scouts to Beckett, who held the record for a bonus for a high school player signing with the team that drafted him when he received $7 million from the Marlins in 1999 after they selected him second overall."

its a BIT too early
to call andrew miller overrated, let him get a full season or two or three under his belt before you make that kind of statement.

Response
I disagree. I was calling Andrew Miller overrated by the 2nd inning of his first major league start.

I then called him underrated in the middle of the 3rd inning, complaining that the naysayers (of whom I was the most vocal) had no clue what they were talking about.

Baseball America reporting.........
that the signing bonus is 3.5M

"Porcello, a consensus top-five talent in the 2007 draft, fell to the Tigers at No. 27 overall because of reports he and adviser Scott Boras wanted a deal comparable to the $7 million major league contract Josh Beckett received as the No. 2 overall pick in the 1999 draft. Porcello reportedly will match Beckett's record for the highest guarantee ever given to a high school player, getting a $7 million big league deal that includes a $3.5 million bonus.

[Editor's note: Porcello's contract information was updated on Aug. 14.]"

The advantage
of a ML deal to the team is that it's a contract on how much the player makes, not a straight bonus so you spread the money over a longer period of time.

Tigers Draft overall...
Anyone notice how well Furbush is doing so far down in Low-A? Hes looking pretty solid so far for a pro debut, even for a college guy.

Also, doesnt anyone know what little Zumaya's stuff is? He has decent numbers in Rookie ball so far and hes very very young. Is he anything like his brother?

The Tigers really look like they could have had a huge draft with Porcello, Crosby, Furbush, Worth, and little Zoom among others.

Any word on why De La Osa hasnt signed?

Im intrigued by him given how well he hit in a tough conference, but I havent heard anything about his status. I really would like to see him get a chance in the Tigers system.

The Tigers seem to have become quite loaded with young arms though.

Signees
I don't think De la Osa is going to sign with the Tigers. He struggled mightily in the Cape this summer, and may want to go back to school to prove himself his senior year. This won't be unprecedented for the Tigers, as they drafted a fellow Vandy player, Casey Weathers, last year and he went unsigned.

Zumaya is smaller than his brother coming out of high school, but he reportedly throws around 90 already, a feat his older brother didn't do in High School.

Several of the pitchers the Tigers drafted have had early success, spearheaded by Furbush like you mentioned. In addition, Supplemental 1st Rounder Brandon Hamilton has pitched pretty well in the GCL. Manny Miguelez and Luke Putkonen struggled early on, but have found their niche their last couple starts.

Add Porcello and Casey Crosby to these pitchers, and you have a pretty good draft class already. And the fact that Danny Worth has been playing well after being thrown into high-A is just icing on the cake. The Tigers have also reportedly signed SS Cale Iorg, a player I admittedly know nothing about, but he apparently is a pretty good player.

Thanks for the info
I had thought De La Osa was a senior and as such was pretty much assured to sign if he had plans to play major league ball. My bad there. Yeah it certainly seems that he will go back to school.

That is very encouraging about little Zoom. While I cant imagine he ends up throwing as hard as his brother, I get the feeling that he could bea very good young arm.

It seems as though the Tigers need to get some bats into their system in the next few years. There is certainly young pitching depth in the majors, high and low minors of the system.

Porcello
where does he rank as far as pitching prospects now?
I heard Tim Lincecum will win 1 Cy Young & 11 Tim Lincecums. Question is, how many Cole Hamels will he win?

very good question
off the top of my head, he's behind:

clay
joba
um... ??

i suppose most people will take kershaw over him. i might be one of those people, but i'm sort of on the fence. i do think price is ahead of him, and i'm still assuming price gets signed within the next 24 hrs.

that could be it though. i think i'd take porcello ahead of davis and hurley and gio and kennedy and guerra and all those guys. he sounds like a pretty special arm.

Right after...
  1. Clay
  2. Joba
  3. Price
  4. Kershaw
  5. Porcello
Anyone know whether he'll get a few innings in this year at Rookie ball? It would be nice to get him some professional experience.
