RIP
Nicest famous guy I ever ran into. He lived on the block right behind my house and was always willing to sign any random object I had. I still have and use the glove he signed. He also bought my whole little league traveling team our unis and cleats.

Kickass guy.

Man...
don't even say that. I just missed Yogi and he's not even gone yet.

Rizzuto...
was a good player and an even better broadcaster. But he is one of those guys that doesn't belong in the HOF as a player. I respect the guy and enjoyed hearing him call a game and he will be missed.

bosh
what a cliche. statistically Bill James ranks him as the #17 best SS in history, a cinch for the HOF. And, beyond that, the character he brought to the game, the love he brought to the game -- and that he brought to others -- makes him more than a hall of famer. will be fondly remembered well after some guy who hit a few more homers is forgotten.

There is a reason...
why it took 40 years for him to get in the HOF and voted in by the Vet committee no less. Sorry, not one of the greats.

there's definitely a reason
simple: some people don't understand baseball.

on the stat side, tell me why bill james is wrong?

on the baseball side, tell me why Ted Williams was wrong?

on the non-baseball side, why shouldn't a guy being a classic character a la Casey Stengel matter in this? it's called the hall of "fame", after all.

you're simply repeating a cliched truism and have no idea what you're talking about. because it's been repeated doesn't make it true, and your pose of disdain is transparently sophomoric -- make you feel cool? if you don't have an argument and just want to say pissy things about a guy who is beloved, then can it.

LOL
The idea that Bill James thinks Phil Rizzuto is a HOFer is laughable. Did you ever read The Politics of Glory?? I agree that Rizzuto is not as bad a selection as is sometimes portrayed, but please don't say that James supported his induction, that's 100% inaccurate.
and boom goes the dynamite.

Rizzuto
was an awesome player and broadcaster, RIP man. I actually sent a letter to him asking for an autograph, got it back with a note that said sorry on it. I figured he was in bad shape, It's so sad

I think
This is one of those "national" stories that is really a local New York story blown out of proportion.

strange
that's a strange thing to say.

Strange? But True
99% of non-Yankees fans couldn't pick this guy out of a lineup. I'm sorry, but his passing doesn't affect my one iota. Mahalo

Man
Just show the guy some respect. If you don't care, don't post. He was a really good guy and deserves to be recognized for what he's done. Let it be.

Why?
I don't think it is normal procedure for CNN to break into national programming for the death of average baseball HOFers.

Scooter was an East Coast/NYC institution. He has (had) little relevance outside the City.
