Around SBN: 2011 In Extreme Home Runs

Jeremy Guthrie

Can anyone tell me what's going on with this guy of late?  He seems to have gotten lit up the last 4-6 starts.  His ERA has jumped from 2.94 to 3.22 as his WHIP and BABIP have increased incrementally as well.  Has the league finally figured this guy out or is this a case of "dead arm"?  Has he changed his pitching motion, has he been tipping his pitches, has his stuff been less crisp overall?

A little insight to what has been going on with him would be great, thanks fellas...

His ERA is 3.41 after this outing
I think the league is catching up to him and he's hit a wall.  That's why August is called the dogdays of summer.

Totally unnecessary IMO. It's not even funny.

Guthrie
Reminds me of Bronson Arroyo a couple of years ago.

His talent level never supported his performance, and the correction was just a matter of time.

Some times corrections just happen sooner rather than later.

Oh, and don't read much into tonight, as the Yankees right now are sending out one of the top 10 hitting lineups of all time.  (with Giambi and Duncan available off of the bench tonight)

If Hughes and Chamberlain pitch well the Yankees will win the division.

he has absolutely nasty stough
how can you say the talent didn't match the performance. He has dominating stuff.

Stuff
I would have to respectfully disagree that he has dominating stuff.

I've watched a couple of his starts and I think he has average to slightly above average major league stuff.

you are in a severe minority
mid-to-high-90's fastball with nasty movement, devastating breaking ball, and a very good changeup.

uh
or 93 mph straight fastball that is nowhere near the high 90s, an above average slider and changeup

there is nothing "devastating" about his stuff, and ive seen him pitch when he has dominated and struggled.

spoken like someone who has read about,
but not watched guthrie's stuff.

Guts
As others have said, Guthrie has looked fatigued the last few outings.  That said, 2 of the 3 have been against the Yanks and the Red Sox (at Fenway), so I'm not quite ready to stick a fork in him.

In terms of pitches, it has seemed like he's had some trouble finishing guys off the last few starts.  Either his command is off a touch, or guys are laying off pitches they used to be swinging through.

Not so sure
That it's necessarily the league catching up to him as much as just the results evening out over time.  His BABIP through June was something like .220.  It was only a matter of time before those grounders started finding holes in the infield.

Guthrie will be alright.  I think once the season is over, you'll look at his stats and see a pretty darn good starter that was just really lucky in the first half and really unlucky in the second half.  Overall, the stats though will reflect his true performance.
