7/31/07 minor league thread

I went to the Lake County Captains game last night against the Greenville Drive.  Daniel Bard was the starting pitcher for the Drive.  He was all over the place.  If you read the BA mini-update on him, you know that he had 3 wild pitches.  But he was missing his spots up, down, in, out.  He also had a hit batter that was called a ball.  I believe it was Beau Mills (lefty) that did a little bounce-back to try to move out of the way and the ball still hit him on the top of his back foot.  The next pitch was a ball and Mills walked.

Aaron Fultz also threw an inning for LC.  He looked good in his rehab outing.  His breaking ball was in full effect and his fastball also looked good.  1, 2, 3 inning.

The best outing of the day had to be from the Darts catcher Ryan Smythe.  He had two home runs, the second of which was a no-doubt shot out of the stadium in the eigth (I think).  He was also very active behind the plate, getting into good position on a short pop foul and just missed a catch while diving for a foul bunt attempt.

Saw Ryan Juhl start at catcher, but he didn't do anything that I thought stood out.

Josh Papelbon (John's brother) also played.  He's a righty submariner that did pretty well.  He kept the ball low, but that's about all I recall.

Sorry there isn't more to this, but it was an outing with co-workers and I wasn't really paying full attention to the game.  Just some things that stood out.

Franklin Morales Promoted to AAA?
I haven't seen it anywhere else but according to this article he has been:

http://www.tulsadrillers.com/news/?id=5033

Since it's from the Drillers' website, I'm inclined to believe it.

Not too surprising since Morales was pitching very well in 4 starts after the Futures Game and there are some in Col that want him up in the bullpen when rosters expand...

Bard =
Daniel Cabrera part 2?  I actually doubt he'll be that good, which says something.  I think he'll improve next year though

Thanks lenred for that report - greatly
appreciated!

Hello lenred,

I wasn't able to provide a Minor League report yesterday, but I heard that Beau Mills did quite well - you can see more about the Captains' game from Tuesday (7-31) here.

Also, on a related Indians' Minors note, SS Asdrubal Cabrera went 4-5 with 2 runs scored for the AAA Buffalo Bisons - you can see more about that, as well as LHP Cliff Lee's first AAA outing here.

I'll try to remember to mention Cabrera's performance from that game in tonight's recap, presuming he plays tonight and I have time to write a report.

Again, thanks for the Lake County game report, lenred - greatly appreciated!  :-)

Take care and have a great day!

Giambi
Removed from Tampa game in 1st.

I, as a Yankee fan, am happy.  I am more than happy with Melky and Duncan instead of him.

Er, what?
Giambi is a great player. Hopefully he replaces Damon as the full-time DH. Platooning with Shelley until he cools off.

Giambi a great player?
this is not 2002.

He is still a good hitter when healthy.  He can hit for power and has a great eye, but if he does come back Damon most likely goes back to CF and that is not good.

not 2002?
.975 OPS in 2005. .971 OPS in 2006. NY's second best hitter this year before getting injured. Giambi is an elite slugger.

Yeah
About 6:00 PM Central time an I-35 bridge collapsed. There was quite a bit of traffic on the bridge - they don't yet know how many are injured or dead.  I'd guess that it's around 100 if not more.

They have no indication that it was terrorism yet, but an investigation will surely follow.

they messed up the contruction on the bridge
something similar happend near where I live when they were fixing a bridge, good thing there wasn't traffic allowed over it or it could of been pretty bad.  The bridge collaped and killed one of my friend's relatives who was working on the bridge.

Milledge benched for Marlon Anderson
I don't have a clue why you would bench a very good prospect for a career journeyman.  Must mean Randolph is favoring his vets over someone who can swing a bat well or it means Milledge is on shaky ground in NY.

He is
pitching very well. Not sure if this is a promotion, or just a spot start yet. I don't think that has come out yet. The Reds called up two of Louisvilles starters, so the Bats needed arms badly. The Bats are helping him out tonight as they have scored 10 runs so far and still batting in the 6th.

Jay Bruce
had to take the first strike in every at bat in his rookie year campaign as well. Organizational mandate. Look at what it did to Joey Votto the same year....Just puting that out there, because comparing any Reds hitting prospect from 2005 is unfair due to that stupid rule.

thanks
I did not know that. That's pretty interesting.

by npurcell on Aug 1, 2007 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah....all around stupid
the pitchers did a 'tandem starter' thing where there were like 8 pitchers and they would pitch 4-5 innings each unless someone was getting roughed up and then the hitters had to take the first strike. Joey Votto is the only guy I have seen that has been real outspoken about it, but he hated that thing. I recall him once saying 'I had to face Justin Verlander that year. He knew I couldn't swing. I knew I couldn't swing. Goodluck hitting off of that guy when you are automatically down 0-1 to him every time.' But really, think about how guys hit when they are behind in the count.... every Reds player had to deal with that in the minors in 2005.... worst idea ever possibly.

pitching
the tandem thing for pitchers isn't a bad idea. Limits their innings and gives the pitchers a set schedule.

by npurcell on Aug 1, 2007 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

maybe....
but so do pitch counts and inning caps on players. Not a single player I have talked to or read about has liked it when it was in action. Starters were coming in out of the bullpen. If their other guy had problems they had to come in with runners on base and it just was a big mess for some of them.

Yesterday you said you thought Andrus was better
and now you said Triunfel has passed him.

Kind of like how you said Chamberlain was gonna struggle in AA, and now you pat yourself on the back for having in your top 10 pitching prospects.

Obviously you won't reply to this, because you haven't yet replied when I've brought this up before.

Response
Maybe he thought that Brian Roberts resembled an older Jack Wilson, or that Jack Wilson looks an awful lot like a younger Brian Wilson, or . . .

You know, sometimes it's just easier to assume the worst and proceed from there.

oddity
so i'm watching the giants-dodgers game, and i noticed that the top of the order for san francisco goes:

rajai davis
randy winn
ray durham
barry bonds

that's four straight african-american ballplayers. it occurred to me that this is very uncommon. (oh, and now fred lewis is running for barry bonds--also african-american.) can anybody think of another lineup like this from recent years?

by jpahk on Aug 2, 2007 12:38 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The D-Rays have probably had a lineup of Dukes, Crawford, Upton, and Young in some similar order this year.  Maybe not 1-2-3-4 though.

Some guys
C. Nelson: 2-4, K, SB (22)

McCutchen (doubleheader): 3-6, K, HR (7), SB (15)

Lillibridge (doubleheader): 3-5, BB, HR (7 in AAA, 10), SB (20, 34). Quick note: hit 309/375/511 in July.

Good news for Braves fans
Lillibridge has really come around this last month, putting up far better numbers than he did at any time in AA.

With Andrus now out of the picture, it's looking like he'll have a shot to fight it out with Escobar for a long-term look at SS.

Either that or they'll trade both him and Renteria this off-season, meaning they will have dealt 4 SS in less than 1 full year. :-D
