Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

7/9/07-Minor Lg Diary

no AAA action tonight, but plenty at other levels.

in afternoon games, Lastings Milledge is 2-4 with 2 home runs. think maybe the report that he'll be the Mets starting LFer after the all-star break cheered him up a bit? maybe just a bit....

personally, I think he's going to explode on the major leagues over the second half. it's his time -- mets are very lucky not to have traded him. (actually, I take that back, they're very lucky they didn't trade him for Rich Harden, the way Blanton has pitched, that's a different story. Think Billy Beane isn't wishing he had given in to the Mets' demands and sent them Harden?)

yeah Milledge is on fire
I wonder what the 2008 outfield will be for the mets.  I want to see it be Milledge-Beltran-Gomez.

Justin Masterson
Masterson made his AA debut after being promoted from Lancaster and he was dominant yet again.  Threw 6 2/3 innings, didn't allow a hit or a run, walked 2, struck out 9 and had an 8/3 GO/AO.

by Plus Plus Fastball on Jul 9, 2007 3:36 PM EDT reply actions

Hey if he dominants AA
should he be right up there with Bowden as a prospect.  Soxprospects sees Masterson as another Lowe.

AZL Royals
2007 14th round Matt Miller, a RH pitcher drafted out of high school, had a great performance in the AZL today.

4.2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K

He now has 16 K in 13 IP while sporting a shiny 2.08 ERA - not bad for a 14th rounder that just graduated high school.

6th rounder Fernando Cruz, a 17 year old 3B out of Puerto Rico, is 2-3 today with an RBI.

Really?
Is that true?

Any chance he gets significant Innings on the Sox THIS year. Would they consider him for the pen in the post-season like papelbon 2 years ago?

This question is for anybody.

Possible
At the beginning of the year, I would have said no way.  But I wouldn't be shocked if Buchholz gets a call-up later this season and works a bit out of the pen.  I imagine the Sox would like to see him work a bit in the Bigs, and it's not like they need to worry about starting his arb clock... they've got the $$$ after all.  Also, depending upon Schilling's status, there could be some space to give him a look-see.  I'd put it at about 50-50 if he keeps pitching the way he has.

Cannot see
why the Red Sox wouldn't put Buchholz into the bullpen. I doubt Buchholz will meet his 160-170 innings limit before the end of the minor league season.

I think he'll be pitching important innings for Boston down the stretch.

Tabata
Tabata 1-2 with a double. He's really starting to hit some more XBH lately.

Austin Jackson is 2-2. He's a 20 year old centefielder who is hitting .415 in 65-atbats after a promotion from Charleston. Exciting to say the least.

Whoops
somebody already posted this :)

I didn't see that

by cmaff05 on Jul 9, 2007 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Tabata
3-5.  Austin Jackson, who saw this coming 4-5 with a HR up to .426 is he a top 50 prospect now and a top 5 yankee prospect.

by Bravesin07 on Jul 9, 2007 9:38 PM EDT reply actions

I think
batting Jackson right in front of Tabata has a lot to do with Jackson's hot streak. He's getting a lot of pitches to hit. If I were the Yankees, I'd keep Tabata in Tampa for the rest of the year because it's clear that Jackson is benefit from batting in front of him. Jackson never hit like this before.

by cmaff05 on Jul 9, 2007 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Jackson
I saw him a couple weeks ago and he looked good.  K'd a couple times, but also hit a bomb.  Looked very good in CF.  He's always had the tools and it seems he's putting it together.  I liked what I saw out of him.

by Tyler on Jul 9, 2007 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions

No question he has benefited
batting in front of Tabata in the line up. Jackson has always has great tools and he's really putting it together. As for Tabata, the guy is just good. To me in some ways he's somewhat underrated. The guy is 18 years old hitting .317 in A+.

McGee
6ip 3er 4h 1bb 3hr 11k's

That makes 3 of the last 5 games where he has had double digit k's and he now has 119 k's in 94 innings.  Will he get promoted this year?

by tt68 on Jul 9, 2007 10:40 PM EDT reply actions

Not
if his curve and change don't get better.  He's dominating pitching off his 93-96 mph fastball.

by Tyler on Jul 9, 2007 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions

He should get the bump
he's showing great control to match all of those K's (2.76BB/9)....gives him a sick 4:1 K to BB ratio.....lefties are hitting a measly .106 on him and he's only given up 4 HR's all year

Indians' Overview!
Hello everyone,

Sorry I was away for a few days; my computer had a malware infection that I had to take care of.  It's pretty well gone now (just waiting for confirmation from the computer expert I've been working with, but all signs seem to indicate that the malware is gone - thank goodness!)

Indians (MLB) - off until Friday against KC; the Indians are 1 game behind the Tigers in the AL Central and lead the AL Wild Card Race by 1.5 games over the Mariners.

Onto the Minors:

AAA Buffalo - off until Thursday for the AAA AS Break.

AA Akron - lost to Erie (DET) 7-4:

CF Trevor Crowe - 2-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI (.225 - BA continues to rise; he even hit 2 HRs in his first 2 ABs on Saturday!)
SS Asdrubal Cabrera - 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 SF (.327 - not hitting the ball like he was; could that collision and his sprained ankle be hindering him or is this just a rare slump?  Either way, the ASB should be good for him, though I think he's a AA AS if I remember correctly, but still should be able to get some rest.)
DH Jordan Brown - 1-3, 1 BB, 1 HBP (.329)
RF Brian Barton - 2-4, 1 BB, 1 K (.309 - also threw out a runner at 2B.)
1B Michael Aubrey - 1-5, 1 2B (.211)
C Chris Gimenez - 2-4, 3 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K (.206 - HR #3, but also has 13 Ks in just 34 ABs; 0/2 in retiring runners who stole 2B and HP!)

LHP Shawn Nottingham - L (7-6) - 6.2 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K; 4 G/11 F (4.13)

Erie:
2B Michael Hollimon - 1-5, 1 R, 1 SB (8-2B) (.273)
3B Kody Kirtland - 1-4, 1 R, 1 K, 1 SB (9-HP) (.222)

Futures Note:  LHP Chuck Lofgren threw a scoreless inning, striking out 1 - used his offspeed pitches more than you'd normally expect to see from a Futures Game pitcher, according to one comment I read (from the BA blog, I think.)

High-A Kinston - off tonight, along with the rest of the Carolina League except Salem (HOU) and Frederick (BAL.)

Futures Note:  DH Max Ramirez had a 2B and scored a run; was also involved in one of the more bizarre plays when his pop-up to RF was bobbled by the 2B, but the RFer caught the bobble attempt since the 2B was running toward RF to catch that pop-up.

Low-A Lake County - lost to Hagerstown (NYM) 6-2:

1B Beau Mills - 0-4, 1 K (.208)
C Matt McBride - 0-3, 1 BB, 1 E (5-fielding) (.291 - 0/1 in throwing out runners attempting to steal - 2B)
LF Nick Weglarz - 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K (.272)
DH Carlos Rivero - 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K (.264)
RF Roman Pena - 1-2, 1 K, 1 HBP (.247)

RHP Paolo Espino - 5.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 6 K, 2 HR (both solos); 8 G/1 F (4.01 - another solid start, especially in the K/IP rate, for the 20-YO 10th-Rd. 2006 pick out of The Pendleton School, Bradenton, FL.)
RHP Austin Creps - L (1-2) - 2.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER; 4 G/2 F (3.90)
RHP Neil Wagner - 2.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 K, 2 HR (solo and 2-run); 1 G/3 F (3.54 - 2nd straight rough outing.)

SS-A Mahoning Valley - lost to Jamestown (FLA) 10-2:

1B Todd Martin - 3-3, 1 R, 2 2B, 1 BB (.371)
2B Jeff Hehr - 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 K (.346)
C Michael Valadez - 1-3, 1 BB (.143 - 26th-Rd. 2007 pick out of Lee, TN.)

RHP Jonathan Holt - L (0-1) - 3.1 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR, 2 WP; 3 G/4 F (10.50 - rough outing for 3rd-Rd. 2007 pick out of Tampa U.)
RHP Mark Rodrigues - 1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HR (solo); 2 G/2 F (2.79)
RHP Nate Bunton - 1.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB; 2 G/1 F (13.50)
LHP Brett Carlin - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K; 1 G/1 F (0.82 - "1s" are wild!  :-)
LHP Jimmy Brettl - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 K; 2 F (2.77)
RHP Vinnie Pestano - 1.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HR (solo); 1 G/1 F (4.32)

Rookie-Level GCL Indians - defeated the Blue Jays 7-4:

LF Ramon Hernandez - 2-4, 1 BB, 1 SB (2-2B) (.224 - continues to rebound from slow start.)
CF Bo Greenwell - 0-5 (.182)
1B Chris Nash - 2-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI (.333)
SS Ronald Rivas - 3-5, 1 R, 1 2B (.262)
3B Jay Nilsson - 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 HBP, 1 E (5-fielding) (.324)
2B Isaias Velasquez - 2-4, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SB (7-2B)
C Robert Alcombrack - 3-4, 2 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 1 K, 1 E (1-throw,) 1 PB (3) (.200 - a HOLY MOLY moment; perhaps his offense is finally coming around, hitting 2 2-run HRs tonight.)

RHP Christopher Archer - 4.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 2 WP; 5 G/4 F (7.47 - nice bounce back after bad outing last time out.)
LHP Jose Urena - W (1-1) - 4.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 WP; 4 G/4 F (4.63)
RHP Travis Turek - 1.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K; 1 G/1 F (0.68)

Blue Jays:
DH Balbino Fuenmayor - 1-4, 1 3B, 1 RBI (.237)

Take care and have a great day!

Deibinson Romero couldn't watch the Major League Home Run Derby because he was too busy putting on a show of his own.

Romero belted three homers and drove in 10 runs as visiting Elizabethton pounded Greeneville, 18-0, on Monday.
