Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Matt Bush shut down

The Padres aren't taking any chances with Matt Bush. After Bush developed a sore shoulder, the club shut him down, four outings after the former No. 1 draft pick moved from shortstop to the mound.

Bush, 21, probably won't pitch for another week, but the Padres expect the right-hander to pitch again this summer. He has struck out 11 over 5 1/3 scoreless innings in his four appearances in Rookie ball.

BOOOOOOOO
He was dominating I was curious to see how fast they would move him and if he could continue his success.

I guess this is looking out for his best interest, but they should have had him make this switch a year ago.

last year?
I would submit this change as needing to take place 3 years ago.

My 2 1/2 year old son takes better hacks than this guy.  The Padres made a huge mistake with that pick.

3 years without mileage on
his arm can do wonders for a young pitcher sometimes. It's three less years in the injury nexus and sometimes guys can even add a mile or 2. It might have been a blessing in disguise that San Diego scouting staff was a little delusional

Wha?

I never get the whole "not pitching might actually be a good thing for a young pitcher!" argument. There is no substitute for development time, whether it has been lost through injury or (as in Bush's case) playing a different position. To suggest a pitcher can actually be a better pitcher through the very act of not pitching is just counterintuitive.

I'm wondering if anybody can provide me with the data that says that the injury nexus is consistent across all pitchers with respect to age rather than  the mileage accumulated on the arm.

exactly
it's all about getting through the first x amount of years of mileage without damage.
