Guess
They probably only did guys who have signed...none of the other top guys are signed yet...

Decent resource....

Although the Jays list doesn't show Jackson as being signed even though he's played several games now.  Nor have the Braves listed any signings.

Initial Reactions
I'm disappointed not to see Desmond Jennings, Alan Horne, or Franklin Morales.  I mean seriously no Morales?  I also thought the guys BMX mentioned were pretty overranked - McCutchen too although I'm not as far down on him as everyone else is.  I thought Balentien and Byran Anderson were Underranked.

Gotta Harp More On Morales
I'm kinda drunk so I apologize in advance.  How can they not have this guy on here?  I mean after watching him throw today - I guarantee any MLB GM (except maybe Steve Phillips and Bill Bavasi) would rather take a chance on his arm than any prospect listed between 50-100.  I know he's risky because of the control issues but if he puts it together, he's going to be sick.  Surely this is just an oversight.

I can't believe no hellickson
He should of been in the top 80 at least.  Pretty shocking there is no Asdrubal Cabrera.  The guys who made the list were on the Beckett Board earlier and said Cabera was only a 110-120 ranked player.

Having DeSalvo on that list
is downright embarrassing. It has to be a clerical error, because he barely makes the Yankees top 100 prospects.

well
i don't think the whole list is insane. it looks like a more reasonable list than, say, luciani's. but there are some pretty glaring misevaluations on it.

by jpahk on Jul 9, 2007 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Maybe
It's hard to tell without knowing why they've over or underranked someone.  I can think of some decent reasons why they might rank guys where they are, even if I don't disagree with them.  Volstad has plenty of projectability left still, while Hellickson has an injury history.

lol, DeSalvo at #65
I'm a Yankee fan, and I think Matt has no business being on the BA top 100, especially when Alan Horne is not on there.  I also think Betances is a little high given his uneven performance in SI so far, but I think he should be on the list.  Kennedy at 35 is also a little high, but I understand given how dominant he has been so far.  If I had to place the Yankee prospects, they would be in this range:

Hughes: 1-4 (could argue for #1, but Upton is a stud)
Joba: 15-20
Tabata: 20-25
Kennedy: 40-50
Horne:  60-70
Betances: 60-70
DeSalvo: 999-1000

Re:
Thanx, Bravesin07, for posting the list.

Here are some things that struck me as way off:

  • No Guerra.  Even if you're not a Guerra fan, w his increased velocity, an 18 y/o more than holding his own in Hi-A has got to be on a Top 100 someplace
  • Kennedy at #35.  He's having a very good year, but his upside is not high, and he's not young for his leagues (spent most of the year at Hi-A).  OK for the back of a Top 100, but not this high.
  • Crowe at #41.  Even if you still believe in him, no way he should be this high.  Maybe at the back of the list.
  • Mason at #62.  Another guy having a nice year, but this seems high for someone who wasnt much of a prospect coming into this year.  I dont think he belongs.
  • Olson at #64.  I'm an O's fan and even I think this is way off.  He hasnt even been considered one of the O's better prospects.  Doesnt belong at all.
  • Carter at #81.  A 24 y/o having a good but not great season in a hitters' league.  Actually, I like the ChiSox' Chris Carter more.  Doesnt belong at all.
  • Parra at #76.  Trying to reestablish himself as a prospect.  I think there are many better condidates for a Top 100.
  • Cahill at #94.  Maybe I'm wrong about this one.  I dont know much about him.  Seems like I would have heard more if he was this good.  Having a nice year tho for a 19 y/o in Lo-A.
  • DeSalvo at #65.  Cant fathom this one at all.  Never was a top prospect and is 27 y/o this year.  It's selections like this that make me think that this is a roto-oriented list.  But if so, how do you explain Butler at #14?

by rhd on Jul 9, 2007 12:48 AM EDT reply actions

Guerra
I dont know how much of that velocity uptick was real...I was just reading Keith Law's recap of the futures game and he said:

"2. Deolis Guerra, RHP, New York Mets: For all the hype on Guerra (not to mention all the questions I get about him in my chats every week), he was underwhelming. His fastball was fringe-average at 87-91, with a lot of 87-88s, and he was all over the place. His change has big fading action but he slowed his arm noticeably. And he had no command of his breaking ball. His command could have been off today for any number of reasons, but the lack of velocity is more damning. "

So its possible he is no longer throwing the mid 90's we heard about before the season but is rather back down to the low 90's of last year. I know its only one game but its something.

On the whole though this list sucks.

by Kanst42 on Jul 9, 2007 9:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Law...
I'm not sure what gun he was looking at, because I saw almost all low 90's from Guerra, and a couple of 93-94. Will Lingo from BA agreed in his live blog:

http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/?p=446

<Guerra threw in the low 90s, touching 93-94 mph, while Morales was in the mid-90s, touching 97.>

Guerra threw the fastball right by Whittleman the pitch before, but then for some reason came back with a change-up on 3-2 that was crushed. I know some people are tired of the age thing, but he was one pitch away from working a perfect inning as an 18 year old. Plus we're talking about 20 or so pitches here anyway...

by MetfanBren on Jul 9, 2007 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions

relief
If he throws normally in mid nineties I would expect a few in the mid-nineties not topping at 94. Also, since it's in relief you would expect even better stuff.

Everyone is going crazy about Morales here but with his build I'm wondering if that is more of a function of him being able to let loose for an inning.

by pedrophile on Jul 9, 2007 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Ahh
Well pretty much every scouting report I have seen on him says his FB sits in the mid-90's and reaches 97-98 - so I'm not sure if I agree that he just let loose for an inning.  But who knows for sure...

by Dfarth on Jul 9, 2007 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions

that's my concern
all prospects sit in the mid-nineties if you listen to the homer scouts. It's so hard to get reliable info.

Also, every year at the futures game there are a few guys with crazy good stuff and most times when they are back in the rotation their stuff isn't quite as good.

It's a nice showcase but I wouldn't read much if anything into it.

by pedrophile on Jul 9, 2007 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm Not Sure If You Are Doubting Morales' Velocity
Or just making a generic comment.  If it's a generic comment then I agree with you.  It seems that "reports" on prospects that are accessible on the internet are often exaggerated.

I do not, however, believe that this is the case with Morales.  I have listened to several of his starts this year and the announcers are always commenting about his velocity - and it is usually similar to yesterday.  I remember one of his starts last year; the opposing announcers had no clue who he was and they were shocked when he touched 98 in that start.  Anyways, that anecdotal evidence, plus the similar scouting reports from BaseballAmerica, lead me to believe that his velocity is indeed for real.

Law and the gun
He stated in his article that the gun on TV was 5 mph fast, so that's where the difference lies. I'm not sure that's accurate, but that's why he thinks Guerra was only throwing mostly in the high-80's.
"fortunately, scouts believe Gomez has enough tools to replace one of his appendages a la Edward Scissorhands" - bleedjaxblue, 7/5/07

by jc3 on Jul 9, 2007 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok...
If the gun on TV was five miles fast then there wasn't much to be excited about in that game at all. I'm pretty sure Will Lingo wasn't watching the game on ESPN though, so there's still differing first-hand opinion...

are quick to write a guy off after about 80 IP.  What is your problem with every single Cubs draft pick?  I have about 1000X more faith in Tim Wilken's ability to draft talent than you.  Mahalo

easy dude-mahalo
I do not have a problem with every Cubs draft pick--that's a reach.  I have more faith in Wilken too.  Gimme Vernon Wells and Alex Rios and I'll be very happy.  However, I coached varsity high school baseball for 4 years and played collegiately 3 years and professionally for 4 years.  So I'll stand by my takes until proven wrong.

I am not writing Samardzja off because of 80 IP.  It's because he was a nothing at Notre Dame and wasn't worthy of the contract he got.  Had he not played football would anybody really know who the hell he is?  I doubt it.

Here's a guy he didn't break 88 as a #2 or #3 college starter and then someone blows up a gun in the Big East Tourney where he adds 10 MPH and gets a MLB contract?  I spoke to college coaches that he pitched against and they were unimpressed.

And my take is that he is not a Top 100 prospect and shouldn't be on the list--that is what this diary is about.  To have a little fun and suggest he needs to go to camp is more "toungue in cheek."  Mahalo.

by So Cal Bob on Jul 9, 2007 7:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Samadrzja vs. Manship
I'm just glad Manship is 20 slots higher than the guy who was drafted well ahead of him and signed for first-round money. Manship was the Friday night pitcher at Notre Dame his junior year. So why did Samadrzja get drafted ahead of him, let alone sign for all those extra dollars? Because he played on the football team that was on national TV all the time.
