Gorkys Hernandez: Does anyone have any projections or infor on him

I have been looking for information but most sites ignore him bc of Maybin. From what i hear he is in the top 3-5 in the system. From what little i have found he seems to have 80 speed and a great glove.

Does anyone know how his power projects? If he has any weaknesses and who he may remind you of in the majors.

Info
He is probably in the Top 3-5 in the Organization as you mentioned. Maybin is the clear #1. Andrew Miller is the #2 so long as he retains prospect status, which may not be for much longer. Porcello would take over the #2 if he signs. Jair Jurrjens is probably the #3 prospect in the system, leaving Gorkys, Jeff Larish and Dallas Trahern to battle out for #4. I'd say its between Trahern and Gorkys at the moment.

As for his skillset, I know he is fast, but I wouldn't call it 80 speed. That is reserved for guys like Jose Reyes and Rickey Henderson. That is not to knock him, because he is very very fast (right up there with Maybin), but I have also read that he just knows how to steal and in what counts to do it. So his high SB total this year can be attributed both to speed and to good baserunning instincts.

His power has not yet developed (he is still only 19), but the raw potential is there. He should hit for average because he has very good bat speed, which is also why he doesn't walk that much or strike out that much - he can put the barrel on the ball most of the time.

As for his D, I know he gets very good jumps from the crack of the bat, which, combined with his speed, makes him a very good CF al a Granderson. I honestly don't know much about his arm to make any reasonable statment on it.

From what I've read and heard, he has a very good work ethic. So while saying he has no weaknesses is clearly misleading, at the moment he really does have true 5 tool potential. The one thing he has not shown this year is power, but that is to be expected of a player so young, and from anyone playing in the Midwest league.

All in all, while he is still really really raw, he does have tremendous upside and I am excited to see how he handles hi-A ball next year. That means, of course, that I don't see him being promoted this year, nor is there any rush anyhow.

Rating guys like that
I always just think, who would I like for my team to get from that organization. And I'd rather steal Gorkys by a pretty good margin than Jurrjens, Larish or Trahern.

Underrated
Jurrjens is very underrated and he is a better prospect than Gorkys right now.  He is a 21 year old holding his own in double A.  He's got a low 90s fastball that he can up the velocity on when he needs it and he has an advanced changeup.  His breaking ball is a work in progress, but when you consider that he has excellent command he is a very good prospect.

I also see him being traded
he is going to be the one traded if they are going to get a relief pitcher.

trades
The Tigers already acquired Jose Capellan and Macay McBride via trades.  They also added Chad Durbin to the pen after Rogers and Robertson returned to the rotation.  This doesn't mean that the Tigers won't acquire another reliever, but it is not absolutely necessary that they do.  Jurrjens is good trade bait if they decide they need to make a deal.

I think that
if the Tigers decide that they're comfortable and decide to go with the pen they currently have, they will probably not win a playoff series.

doesn't look too bad to me

Except that
you have no idea what to expect from Zumaya or that he'll even be pitching, and basically the same with Rodney. This isn't 2006, those two aren't dominant setup guys.

Oh and by the way Todd Jones has a 1.56 WHIP and 5.67 ERA. I guess if you want to believe that his four losses and four blown saves give him a nice rate of effectiveness and just ignore how he's pitching, you can.

"I guess if you want to believe that his four losses and four blown saves give him a nice rate of effectiveness and just ignore how he's pitching, you can."

Thats what you have to do with Jones.  Its not pretty but he usually gets the job done.

Right but
all of his numbers are much worse this year. His save pct is down around the 80% baseline acceptable for a closer. His K/BB ratio has gone from 4.4 to 2.5 to 1.3 the last three years. His career average is over two. He's not having even a typical Todd Jones season.

Maybe
It is very possible that he is shipped out to get relief help. However, the Tigers' brass is very high on Jurrjens, as they should be considering he was a 20 year old last year pitching well in AA and again pitching well this year. That is why if they are to trade him for BP help, the Tigers are going to demand 1 to 2 pretty darn good relievers in return for him.

So, while I think you are right that his name may be swirling around come trade time, I also agree with SB that the Tigers don't have to get BP help with Rodney and Zumaya set to return in August, so they aren't going to give Jurrjens away for nothing.

Elaborate
To elaborate on that for a second, I honestly would be surprised if our GM Dombrowski would trade Jurrjens straight up for Gagne given the youth/upside of JJ and the injury history of Gagne. Now of course I have no info to support this, it is just an illustration of how high the Tigers seem to be on JJ.

This is a big overgeneralization
...but I'm not sure that you can call any pitcher at the stage that Jurrjens is at (21 and in AA) without a working, decent breaking ball a really good prospect. Maybe potentially a really good prospect, but not already one.

Here's a Good ?
Would you rather have Gorkys or fellow A-Ball speedster Desmond Jennings?  Here are their relative stats:

Gorkys Hernandez
Birthday - 09/07/1987
Height/Weight - 6'0/175
AVG/OBP/SLUG/OPS - .294/.347/.378/.725
AB/K/BB/XBH - 296/43/22/18
SB/CS - 33/7

Desmond Jennings
Birthday - 10/30/1986
Height/Weight - 6'2/180
AVG/OBP/SLUG/OPS - .315/.396/.471/.868
AB/K/BB/XBH - 295/39/34/27
SB/CS - 38/12

Obviously, Jennings has shown more power and has ratios that are a bit better.  But, he is also a year older and is a bit of a better league for hitters.  I'm curious what everyone thinks...

Phillip Hughes turning into Barbaro? Odds are that Hughes will probably be put to sleep within the next year. --Bravesin08

pssh
DJ > Gorkys

Better body for power projection and I think he'll have a higher OBP than Gorkys.

The 1 year does make a difference, but Jennings is only getting better as the year goes along. He's actually improved every month of his professional career.

Rays in '08.... Desmond Jennings - the breakout continues.....
